GUINESS BREWERY & MUSEUM
DUBLIN
I am rather partial to a drop of the blackstuff, so when my son arranged a weekend break for my good lady wife and my self to Dublin, I had to visit the Guiness Brewery and Museum.
Now perhaps I am biased, but this was one of the best tours I've taken.
St James Gate is the entrance to the brewery; the gate is enormous, with big letters spelling out its name. A real photo opportunity.
The brewery looks like a big factory, but inside you find that the building gets larger the higher up you go, just like a pint glass!!
When you walk in, you are directed to the center of the floor, where you see the original signed lease for the building.
Everyone is given a clear token with a drop of Guinness in the middle - save this, as you will need it at the top to get your 'free ...
Advantages: interesting and excellent value for money - great view! Disadvantages: none really!
The Guinness Museum (now known as the Guinness Storehouse) is based in the original fermentation plant on the St James's Gate site in Dublin, Ireland. The building in which the exhibition is based was a working building for Guinness as recently as 1988, although the exhibition itself is far more recent than this, having been revamped within the last year.
As you walk in to the exhibition the first exhibit on display is the original lease signed by Arthur Guinness in 1759 for the site on which the exhibition stands. The original lease for the site is for 9,000 years, but I'll not spoil the surprise and let you visit the museum for yourself in order to find out why that was!
The exhibition itself consists of displays on a number of different floors giving details of the ingredients and processes used in brewing Guinness ...
Advantages: free pint at the end, you can say you've seen some Irish culture Disadvantages: not a lot to see
process all went over my head, let alone that of a child. However I am glad I went, and if you are in Dublin and have some time then I would say yes, go, but it wouldn't rate high on my list of To-Do's. Once you've done it once though, I wouldn't feel the need to return. I do think however that the fact that they have made a huge museum around one drink is slightly fascinating in itself.
