Hotel chains can be very faceless and lacking in interest. Having spent six years living out of hotels, I’ve become only too familiar with the charms of the Forte Posthouse chain (now part of the Intercontinental Hotels Group and rebranded as Holiday Inns). Why then am I writing about this particular hotel?
Where is it? ~~~~~~~~~
The Leeds/Brighouse Holiday Inn is immediately adjacent to the M62 at junction 25. This is about 10 miles from Leeds but the position close to the motorway means that, for business travellers, it is worth considering for a range from Manchester, which is only an hour to the west, to York and beyond. For leisure travellers there is good access into the Pennines and North Yorkshire.

The hotel is of average size for this chain with 94 rooms. This is a modern hotel, built in 1988 and refurbished as recently as 2002. It has a leisure club with gym, sauna and swimming pool, which is, of course, available to guests. The restaurant here is ‘Junction’ branded, which is to be preferred to the Traders that were more common in the past. The range of food offered is much better in the ‘Junction’ restaurants. ‘Traders’ tended to be best compared to Little Chef in the range of dishes available – generally cheap and cheerful, but in this case not cheap! The restaurant in this case is of an excellent standard both in terms of the quality of the food and the presentation. The restaurant is pleasant in layout with adequate, if not generous, space. It has suitably subdued lighting levels in the evenings while being light and airy at breakfast.
The bar is an open plan area between reception and the restaurant. The furnishings are comfortable and well maintained and the area light and cheery. There is a definite feeling of spaciousness to all the public areas. The bar offers the usual range of drinks, bar snacks and light meals are available 24 hours, either through the bar or the night porter.
The bedrooms are far better than the average. The rooms are large and well laid out, the bathrooms are modern, clean and well maintained. Rooms on the front of the hotel have balconies, which would be pleasant on a summer evening as the hotel faces west. The rooms offer the facilities one would expect in this type of hotel; TV, tea & coffee making, mini-bar, trouser press and hair dryer. Room service is available 24 hours.
The hotel has a number of rooms of varying sizes available for private functions, either business meetings or social functions. One word of caution, if you are staying on a Saturday and want to get an early night, avoid the rooms overlooking the rear courtyard. The main function rooms open onto this area and it can get a little boisterous, as this is a popular venue for wedding receptions. If you are concerned, check with reception when booking or checking in.
My recommendation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Overall the Leeds/Brighouse Holiday Inn is an excellent example of hotel chains at their best, offering consistent standards and reasonable prices. For weekends, in particular, it can be cheaper to stay here than in a roadside lodge. Highly recommended both for business and leisure.
