Don't believe all the hype

Advantages: Great location
Disadvantages: Not worthy of 4 stars

The Alvia is a small guest house in Brighton that describes itself as a boutique style hotel but don't be fooled by this promotional blurb. That's not to say that there is anything drastically wrong with this place so long as you are not expecting anything more than a standard seaside B&B. It is graded as a 4 star guest house by the Tourist Board and has won numerous awards over the years. However please note that this place has recently changed ...
...that attracted me to the Alvia is that it offers parking spaces. Parking is notoriously difficult and expensive in Brighton but this place has room for about six cars at an additional fee of £10 per day. One thing that you need to be aware of however is that if you park here you will not be able to use your car at all during your stay since the proprietors don't live here and your car will be locked in. This wasn't a problem for me and it was explained ...

An ideal centrally based hotel

Advantages: Reasonable prices, very central, modern facilities
Disadvantages: Can be busy and noisy

Very central to shopping, buses, theatre and not far from the sea front, the hotel is on a busy street. The rooms and the reception area and restaurant seem to have been improved recently and having stayed there a few times in the last 3 years with friends or family, I have found it an ideal place to stay. It is also not far from the train station (about 5 minutes by taxi). There is parking at one of two nearby car parks at very reduced rates but ...
...The prices are very reasonable but at weekends, you need to book well in advance. The rooms are basic but clean and bathrooms are modern with good showers. The accessible rooms for disabled people are large but lacking some handrails and not all have showers. Sometimes other visitors have been very noisy at nights but I haven't found this to be a problem more than once.. The food in the restaurant has definitely improved and there is a reasonable ...

Languishing in the lovely Lanes

Advantages: friendly service, great location
Disadvantages: wee bit overpriced for level of facilities

I visited Brighton for the first time recently to celebrate Duskman's 30th birthday and I can report I had a fabulous time. Many factors contributed to it being brilliant but a large part of the experience can be attributed to our stay at The Lanes Hotel , a lovely little family run hotel located not in the historic Lanes area of the town as the name implies but on Marine Parade facing the seafront at Brighton. I must confess the Lanes Hotel was ...
...took two night bookings at the weekend in spring and summer. It was time for a rethink and to look for more modest accommodation as two nights at a boutique hotel would be well over our budget. After rejecting anything way out of town, anything that did not have good reviews on an independent travel website (I did not an to be stock in a glorified dosshouse) and any bland faceless Premier Holiday Lodges we were left with two options. The first one ...

Travelodge Brighton, a good deal

Advantages: Parking outside, nice rooms, good rates
Disadvantages: only one choice on breakfast menu

I booked online at www.travelodge.co.uk I needed a disabled friendly room and so asked for a double, smoking, disabled room. When we arrived, thats exactly what we got. You'd be surprised how many online bookings for disabled facilities can go wrong! The receptionist asked if we needed any assistance getting to the room and also in the event of fire, asked if we would need assistance. We were also asked if we parked in the hotel car park, and ...
...as we have a blue disabled parking badge - the fee is normally 5 pounds. We were told that if we wanted to leave the car in the car park for the day even after checking out the next day, we could. The room was spacious enough for the wheelchair, as was the bathroom. It was clean, and smelt fresh even though it was a smoking room. The bed was large, with a warm duvet and there were extra pillows in the wardrobe if we needed them. There was a TV ...

Fantastic boutique haven

Advantages: Greal location, friendly, good food, well decorated
Disadvantages: Can't think of any

...Old Steine Square and the sea which is literally across the road. The rooms are all individually themed with great attention to detail and seemingly no expense spared in creating a comfortable, stylish and innovative environment. I stayed for four nights in the lower ground floor boudoir, which is a two-room apartment with ensuite bathroom and even a small courtyard. The superior / themed rooms have extra luxuries like wrought iron four poster ...
...bookcase in ny lounge and I'm sure there are in other rooms as well. DVDs for the player can be found in the reception lounge along with newspapers and local itterature. The staff are professional, relaxed, helpful and friendly, and make you feel right at home. The breakfast, which can be delivered to the room, offers excellent choice with vegetarian and vegan options. To top it off it is all freshly made to order and served promply with a smile. ...
