I recently spent a day in Brighton after visiting relatives who live down that way. The 17th century lanes were a real experience. Located slightly back from the seafront, the lanes are the oldest area in Brighton and Hove and used to be a medieval fishing village. Today, the narrow lanes are made up of many quirky little shops, selling antiques, jewellery and designer labels. There are many great shops just waiting to be discovered and numerous places to eat and drink. I thought it made a nice change to the usual high street shops and large shopping malls, although I didn't buy anything because most of the items were rather expensive.
As anybody who has been to Brighton before will know, parking is a real problem. We parked by the seafront on the road which leads to the marina. Here you can park for as long as you want and it won't cost you an arm and a leg, unlike many of the car parks in the town centre.
Advantages: Only one hour from London, great vibes, good bargains Disadvantages: None!! Lots of fun for everyone..
The Lanes of Brighton are one of the best places in England for the coolest gear and best vibes.
If you arrive via train from London, the Lanes are just down Queen Street towards the beach, and to the left. There are stores to cater to every taste, including mens and womens clothes, jewellrey, sunglasses, belts, funky art / craft places, bead shops and much much more... the selection is huge, and the ideas are much more exciting than the high street ... ...is the Brighton Bead Shop (Sydney St). It has a wonderful range of all beads, and includes all the materials you need to make you own designs, starter kits for beginners, helpful and informative staff and all at really good prices. I head straight there as soon as get into Brighton.
In addition to all the cool shops, there is a number of pubs and cafes scattered throughout the Lanes that will cater to all tastes.
Definately recommend this site ...

Advantages: Great if your looking for something different Disadvantages: None
We decided to fit Brighton into our plans of spending a week travelling from Scotland down the east coast and back up the west of England, so Brighton seemed like a good place to visit for a couple of days since we have a friend who has moved there.
Our Friend took us to Brighton Lanes and we were surprised at how quaint it is. It must be very old as it almost makes you feel like you have gone back in time!
The lanes lead around the town centre ... ...hours browsing their wares. Although we could have spent longer.
It is an ideal place for gifts as you are sure to purchase something out of the ordinary.
We were very impressed with Brighton and the lanes and intend to fly down next time to investigate further!! ...

Advantages: Too many...London by the sea...cosmopolitan, diverse, shopping! Food! Disadvantages: Can be dirty - very busy in summer with exchange students under your feet.
Having lived in Brighton for several years I can honestly say I would rather walk around the lanes on a day off work than anywhere else in the world - its just fabulous :D The small winding allys are a real curiosity shop extravaganza - jewellery shops, gifts, clothing, shoes, restaurants, dog parlours, hand made chocolates, bespoke perfumes - you name it - its amazing! Every time I have moved away and returned to Brighton something has changed and ... ...you have never been to Brighton then you are really missing out on the 9th wonder of the world :) Its the most diverse and exciting town i the world! Whether your taking your Nan for a seaside stroll or booking a dirty weekend with the mistress you will adore Brightons Lanes. Only 5 minutes ifrom Hotels and the Pier, you can shop and eat rock in minutes. ...

Advantages: Funky, individual, prices to suit all pockets Disadvantages: Parking is terrible
We had decided on a 3 seater leather sofa and some accessories. My 3 year old daughter Hannah had come with me. The store manager, Charlotte Waring, very kindly gave Hannah some soft toys to keep her amused while I signed the paperwork. Everything is run very efficiently here and the sofa would be delivered 3 weeks hence. Well, you guessed it, the sofa didn't arrive on the allocated date. Miss Waring apologised profusely and three days later, we ...

...of us which was a bit cheeky.
The ideal location of the hotel meant we could nip out into Brighton town centre whenever we wanted to do a spot of shopping in the famous 'Brightonlanes' or to grab a bite to eat from one of the many restaurants scattered about. We had not paid for dinner at the hotel and so ate at a restaurant called Fat Leo's in the evening which offered good Italian food for a decent price. After dinner we returned to the hotel at about half past nine and had a few drinks in the hotels Pavilion Bar which offered a wide range of drinks at a reasonable price.
The next morning we woke up early and went down for breakfast in Jenny's Restaurant, a full English breakfast was available and a number of different fruit juices including tea and coffee. The breakfast was lovely and the hotel staff bright and cheery, delivering...

Advantages: Good Food! Great Ambiance. Superb Value For Money. Disadvantages: Can Be Very Busy. A Couple Of Lacklustre Dishes.
...Whilst food, either cooked at home by my superbly talented wife, or eaten out could be regarded as something of a passion of mine, writing foodie or restaurant reviews is not.
Neither am I myself much of a cook I'll have you know!
However having discovered Donatello Ristorante two years ago, we have eaten there, probably a dozen times in the last eighteen months, this is at least twice as many times as we have eaten out anywhere else during the same period. That being the case it is obviously high time to tell you all about it.
This very well known Italian restaurant, situated in the most historic part of the city of Brighton & Hove i.e. Brighton Place in The Lanes, certainly requires no plug from me in order to drum up trade. I will not give you detailed instructions here on how to find it - pop into any shop in the Lanes area...

Advantages: Great beer, good food Disadvantages: Gets busy
...If you are a fan of real ale but don't want to drink in a pub populated by overweight middle-aged men with long beards and even longer sideburns then this is the place for you.
'The Basketmakers Arms' (12 Gloucester Road) is a long established traditional and yet trendy, public house hidden away in the North Laines of Brighton. The North Laines (not to be confused with the more touristy Lanes!) is an area of small streets leading down the hill on the left hand side of the main Brighton Railway station. The area is full of small shops selling all sorts of weird and wonderful items from second hand comics and books, trendy designer clothes to craft shops and bohemian looking café and bars. There is a good selection of pubs in the area and 'The Basketmakers Arms' is probably one of the best.
