A TRUE ASSET TO THE ENGLISH SEASIDE SCENE!

Advantages: Splendid by day, beautiful by night. Free Admission and deckchairs. Open all Year
Disadvantages: Can be crowded in summer

...People who have never visited Brighton may not have even heard of the Pavilion, Clock Tower or Preston Manor, however I would lay odds on the fact that they would be able to tell you that Brighton has two piers and probably even that one of them is falling into the sea. Without the aid of a time machine, I am unable to deliver to you a review on the West Pier that would be of any value, so instead this review is of the one that is still very much ...
...born, in my childhood days, Brighton sea front, the two piers and even the Royal Pavilion were regarded strictly as the preserve of tourists. Of course these people that came to "our town" - tourists - were regarded as a lower order, under no circumstances to be mixed with. Good job my parents were not employed in the tourist industry then I guess!

Fortunately, in adulthood, I have, I hope, taken a more enlightened view of ... more

Brighton Pier

Advantages: Free entry
Disadvantages: Gets very crowded

...all. Officially known as The Brighton Marine Palace Pier or the Palace Pier for short it officially opened in the May of 1899. By this date the Victorians and their predecessors had already built many other piers, including two earlier ones at Brighton. Brighton's first pier was constructed in 1823. This was known as The Royal Suspension Chain Pier and still existed in 1891 when construction of the Palace Pier began. At this time the Chain Pier was ...
...wonderful bird's eye view of Brighton whilst others will suspend you precariously over the sea. I watched with interest but decided to give them a miss. For the less adventurous there are things like a log flume and carousels. Tokens need to be purchased from one of the kiosks on the pier to go on the rides. These cost £1 a time with most rides costing between one and three tokens a time although the main rides can set you back as much as a whopping ...

Get Ready For A Fleecing

Advantages: Has a good atmosphere, some games can be fun
Disadvantages: You lose money quickly here, rides shut in bad weather

I last visited Brighton Pier about 3 weeks ago whilst visiting for the weekend with my girlfriend. It's a fascinating if slightly depressing place. It's a throwback to the glory days of the English Seaside and at the height of summer can be so much fun. The beginning of October in the rain however has it's own unique charms and lack of them too. For those who don't know the pier, it is in the heart of Brighton off the main seafront promenade and ...
...games, slot machines and other devices for robbing you of your valuable pennies. At the end of the pier are the serious amusements and rides including a rickety looking roller coaster precariously perched on the edge of the pier, a ghost house lacking in frights and a number of carousels for the more feint hearted amongst us. Sadly, although I have used these in the distant past when I feared for my life less often than I do now, the rides were shut ...

Brighton Pier in East Sussex

Advantages: great transport links along the coast and to London
Disadvantages: if its raining, but can still be good

Brighton Pier was built in the Victorian times and still retains its Victorian splender. This thriving pier has a built in fun fair at the far end with ferris wheel, dodgems, helterskelter and all the old favourites that you would expect from this lovelly holliday resort. There are many fruit machines to play with low or high jackpots. There is a bar on the pier so you can have a pint or two with your lunch or dinner;the food there was very good when ...
...the horizen, while looking back towards Brighton you see the amazing architecture and the pretty beach although its stones and not sand its still nice to see, also the Volks railway runs along the beach up to the Marina which has a large shopping complex and cinema, and you see many of the small Volks trains going up and down.I found Brighton pier to be a lovely place wether in the sunshine in the summer when its fantastic but also even in the winter ...

The 3 Brighton Piers

Advantages: Great day out
Disadvantages: Cost a lot to repair

Brighton has been a firm family favourite seaside destination for over 150 years now. It was once the favourite home of Queen victoria. She had the grand Pavillion renovated in the town and in 1850 sold it to the town. A grand structure, it looked more like the Taj Mahal. A Palace fit for a Queen. This may be how one of Brighton's 2 piers got their name. Brighton has in fact had 3 piers during its history. 1) The Chain Pier ----------------- In 1827, the first pier opened in Brighton and was, in fact, simply a landing stage for boats and ships. It was named, the Chain Pier. Being so close to the continent, it became used as the first stop off on a travellers journey to London. It soon became clear that the public like walking on the pier and it offered a recreational purpose. Walking over water was new and therapeutic. Its ...

Review of West Pier, Brighton

Yellow Submarine - The Hilton Brighton West Pier

Advantages: Good position. Great sea views. Spacious room.
Disadvantages: A little tired - needs a new lease of life, perhaps!

Apart from one occasion, long ago, when a friend and I misjudged the bus-timings to the theme park at Alton Towers and ended up in Derby with nothing better to do than sit in the public gallery watching a rather tedious shoplifting trial, I can honestly say that I have never been to court. British courts, however, are fairly opulent affairs, so I believe, and once sentence is passed the last words the unfortunate convict hears are "Take him down!" And down he, or occasionally she, disappears into a place somewhat more austere and wholly less homely. And that rather bizarre introduction leads me perfectly into my initial thoughts on the Hilton Brighton West Pier if you happen to arrive by car, as we did. First impressions count quite significantly, after all, and however lavish the reception area may be - and it's not at all bad - you ...

BRIGHTON WEST PIER, WHAT A SORRY STATE OF AFFAIRS

Advantages: It is a part of Brighton's history and should be restored
Disadvantages: Will be very expensive

We went to Brighton in May 2004 and saw the old Pier. The closest you can get is on the street, or on a boat. The Pier has been closed for years and is no longer safe. The pillars where the walkway used to be are still there, along with some kiosks. I was fascinated by the old Pier and we popped into a Portacabin there and bought a book about it. Since then I have taken an interest in the future of the pier. Brighton West Pier opened in 1866 and originally cost £28,000 to build, a lot of money at that time. It is now one of only 2 Grade 1 Listed Piers in this country. Does that not count for something? The Pier closed in 1975 due to fears that it might fall down. The company that owned it went into liquidation. The Pier was open for guidied tours only until it fell into complete disrepair. For various reasons, it was ...
