And not strictly in Bristol either…….

History indicated that, despite being my second closest International airport, I was destined never to fly from Bristol.

The first time we booked to fly from there was to Fuerteventura a couple of years ago, then Thomsons, in true style decided to let us know about major building works at our apartments a mere 6 days before we were due to travel, the result? We ended up having a week in Cyprus with JMC from Cardiff instead. The second time, we had booked a half term trip to Tunisia complete with whole family, and I mean whole; including ex-wife, new partner, her in laws, her son, my stepson, martin, me and Tasha – then my other half was hit with an operation and a big ‘C’ diagnosis less than 4 weeks before travelling, yet another cancellation!!.

18 months on, new project, new regime, requiring me to up my work based travelling about 500%, and with it the need to get to Belfast for a 9am start.

Car was a definite no-no, train and ferry was not fancied, price with BA from Cardiff (Pre BMIBaby daysand unsurprisingly no longer operational) was around £400 return; so to the rescue, FlyBE from Bristol – third time lucky? But enough of my ramblings, onto the facts.

DESTINATIONS
Scheduled flights from Bristol operate to 27 European destinations by a range of carriers including EasyJet, FlyBE, BA and KLM who run the city-hopper service to the world gateway hub of Schipol, beware the pilots with alter-egos.

Charter destinations, as would probably be expected, vary between summer and winter, the former including the more popular European package holiday destinations.

GETTING THERE
I don’t know what it is about South Western UK Airports, but the term, ‘close to motorway networks’ seem to mean something completely different when compared to the likes of Heathrow, Glasgow, Luton and Birmingham to name a few; my local airport, Swansea, is closer to the M4 than Bristol, and locals are up in arms about the increased number of flights and resulting road traffic.

From the M4 East and Westbound, you leave the motorway at Junction 22 and use the M49 link motorway down to the A4, careful you don’t end up on the M5, easily done. To be fair, the airport is signposted all the way down, but you will find yourself going around the outskirts of Bristol, under the Clifton Suspension bridge, past Bristol City Football ground (be aware of this if City are playing at home) and on to North Somerset across lots of roundabout, one-way systems and road junction crossovers – not the easiest of treks (c.20 miles) and has been known to take me as long as getting from Swansea to the M49.

Coming from the South West you would follow the M5, local route in, from the north, probably advisable to join the A4 from the M5 and use the abovementioned route.

PARKING
Did you know?................ This may not be strictly correct anymore with the recent growth spurts of small local airports such as Swansea that Bristol is the only airport car-park that you cannot pre-book parking – I wonder why?

UPDATED:
You can now apparently pre-book your parking at Bristol, and their prices have come down slightly, now charging customers at portions of £12 per day for staying less than the 24 hours, maybe they got some bad press.

The car-park in Bristol is massive, the ground of extremely poor quality, the one-way systems are not strictly so because of barriers being where they shouldn’t, so take care. Car Parking is, I have to say, extortionately priced for a regional airport, £12 per day or part thereof, long term and short-term. Cardiff sets you back a maximum of £5/day, even Gatwick onsite parking was cheaper. Aaagggh – when we flew to Prague, my car-parking bill for 3 days was only £7 less than the flight – the ticket machine seems to have a mind of its own, I have paid different amounts for the same amount of parking, sometimes two full day rates for around 36 hours, other times £18.20.

As I said, the car-park is big, and therefore it is worth making a note of your location using the large, strategically placed green signs, as if you are away for a while, or consume large quantities of alcohol whilst travelling, you can easily lose your car. There is a regular free bus service to take you to the terminal, but one thing I would say about Bristol airport, is that irrespective of where I am travelling from, arrival here is always COLD – every visit has seen me blasted with an icy wind, I am sure one of you experts out there will explain why, haven’t passed this ditty onto my other half as I am not ready for a lecture in air-pressure and the reasons why certain places are colder/hotter than others.

Parking can be paid for in the machines in the terminal using cheque or credit card, those machines in the main departure area are generally quieter than those in baggage reclaim; If you do elect to pay at the exit barrier you will be restricted to credit card payment and there is usually a queue.

If you do require a receipt, make sure you select the receipt button at the appropriate time, if you forget, you can get a manual receipt from the customer services desk situated in the main terminal building.

THE AIRPORT ITSELF
Bristol has a nice new glass terminus, I do believe that not so long ago it was a wooden shack you will see as you approach the car-park, I was told the new build was nice, and was looking forward to my first visit, finally..

On the ground floor as expected there are service desks for the major carriers, car hire outlets, a small shop that sells all sorts of flight/holiday accessories, cash-point machine, customer services desk, car park ticket pay-machines, a coffee bar, Bureau de Change and lots of check-in desks; EasyJet’s (formerly GO) check in desks are in a row on the far right of the concourse.

After checking in (2 hours scheduled/3 hours charter), you can browse around their small (and I mean small) selection of shops before moving through passport control into departures. There is a Dorothy Perkins Outlet, WH Smiths, and Claire’s Accessories, all surrounded by a ‘small’ seating area.

On the upper level there is a number of food outlets and a bar (the only area here you can smoke).

I have only sampled the obligatory Burger King food here, as usually I am in a rush to get to the airport, and whilst the food is good, cheaper than motorway service stations, but dearer than the high street, the customer service is “DIABOLICAL” – rude and slow - my partner was astonished at how appalling it was, how I kept my cool I will never know.

UPDATED: I have now sampled a number of meals from the 'other' restaurant on the upper floors, and the service is just as miserable and slow, and the quality of the food is appalling, unappetising and cold, and if you complain you get microwave support.

The food seating area overlooks the departure lounge and the runway, so I guess provides some release if collecting someone whose flight has been delayed.

SECURITY AND PASSPORT CONTROL
Normally I wouldn’t mention this separately, but Bristol’s system, particularly post September 11, is worth mentioning. They take a photo of every passenger and this is used at all steps down the line including boarding the plane – offers some reassurance in these turbulent times, on the occasion we travelled to Prague, we do believe that these were also transferred to the other side. I thought this was a fairly new innovation as I had never noticed before, but I am assured that it is a procedure that has been going on for a very long time at Bristol.

DEPARTURE LOUNGE
Once through security, you are in the departure lounge, - be warned there are no cash-points on this side, as I have discovered to my cost in the past. On the lower floor there is a duty free/paid shop, a small WH Smiths and an amusement arcade. The duty free shop is well stocked and has some of the best offers I have seen from a UK airport on booze if flying outside the EU, trouble is I am always afraid to buy then in case it ends up getting broken.

There is a medium sized seating area, all no smoking and if you want to partake, you will have to move to the small bar area upstairs – when I say small, again I mean small. It is easily found simply by following the haze and smell, I have also never seen it clean.

Upstairs there is a small gaming area, toilets, telephones, snack bar selling rolls, coffees and pastries and the bar, apparently the guy, a very friendly little chap who runs it, has a twin brother that runs the other bar before airside, but enough about him, the lager is warm and expensive, around £1.30 for a half-pint.

All around the area upstairs and down, there are TV monitors advising you of flight departures, delays, status etc.

In addition to the usual facilities, there is an Executive Lounge at Bristol, Opening hours Mon-Fri & Sun: 20.30 hours Sat: 20.00 hours; this offers complementary snacks, soft and alcoholic drinks, newspapers and internet and fax services, it is also no smoking – although a £17.50 charge and a maximum check in-time of 3 hours before your flight is due to depart, somewhat overpriced I think, I will stick with my cacky tasting ½ lager in the main bar when I can enjoy my ciggie in mucky relative comfort. The lounge cannot be used for travellers going to Eire and Northern Ireland, not sure why.

SUMMARY
Will I be using Bristol again?

Expensive parking, cold weather, warm beer and not the place you would want to be stranded for a long time, but for me it is more convenient than London or Birmingham, and as Bristol often has the right destination at the right time for me, case in point being my timely forthcoming arrival at Bristol from Glasgow the first day of the next Ciao meet, but out of choice I would pick Cardiff every time, not too wonderful in a crisis, but a better array of shops, eateries and bars.

UPDATE:
Bristol now gets an extra star from me, why? Because they have WiFi internet access throughout, customers can chose from BT OpenZone of Swisscom's Eurospot, meaning I can sit in the bar and do my work, for me at least, this turns everything on its head and suffice to say, even long delays would no longer be a problem providing I am travelling with my laptop.

Well done. I flew from Bristol once, many years ago. It has clearly changed a lot since then. Diane.
