Bristol Museum: Much More Than Boring Old Plates

Advantages: Educational, fun and free.
Disadvantages: Long, long queues until the end of August 2009.

...paid my first visit to Bristol Museum. Sadly, it turned out to be a major disappointment. My grandmother took me, having told me that we were going to see Alfred the gorilla, who had retired to the museum after gaining national fame as the star attraction at Bristol Zoo. She had been lucky enough to see Alfred at the zoo, where he would be paraded amongst the public on a collar and chain and delight them with his tricks, such as making and throwing ...
...being in a combination of Bristol Byzantine and Venetian Gothic Revival styles (loosely based on the Doge’s Palace!) and which was itself once home to the museum. They make a stately trio.

The building dates back to 1905 and the arched entrance on Queen’s Road used to span a driveway that once allowed people to step straight from their carriages into the museum without being troubled by rain on wet days. Only a few years ago ... more

Bristol City Museum = Fantastic Family Fun

Advantages: WARNING- LONG REVIEW. Loads to see and do for adults and kids.
Disadvantages: WARNING LONG REVIEW. Poor disabled facilites and cafe.

...took was a visit to Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery. It's a great attraction for us living in Bristol and with free entry it's perfect for our ever expanding family as it doesn't break the bank. Getting to the museum is simple enough for us, as we're local, but the parking is a real problem, being situated in the middle of busy Queens Road, at the top of Park Street, in Clifton, it is near impossible to find a space nearby and we always park in ...
...buildings and into the museum. Bristol City Museum & Art gallery is set in a beautiful baroque Edwardian building, a grade 2 listed building, it seems somewhat out of place surrounded by modern shops, café's and office buildings but this only enhances its beauty and makes the building not only the home of the exhibits but an exhibit in itself. The museum is one of the few to be awarded "Designated" status by the government, which is designed to protect ...

Excellent Exhibits in Bristol

Advantages: World-class collections; great displays for children; free of charge
Disadvantages: Needs easier access to upper floors

...see how its counterpart in Bristol compared. I expected that perhaps it would be a grander affair, and I was right. Whereas Portsmouth concentrates mainly on local history and art, Bristol, whilst giving prominence to local artists and exhibits, has world-class displays in its galleries. The museum is housed in an imposing three-storey Edwardian building; the stairs are not steep and there is a lift to certain areas on the upper floors, but you do ...
...silver artefacts amid paintings of Bristol as it was over two hundred years ago. Realising that we did not have time to see everything in one visit, we passed fairly quickly through this room; I really must go back one day to admire the silver. We made a beeline for the more modern exhibits such as the paintings of the St Ives group. Barbara Hepworth is represented here by a painting rather than a sculpture, alongside Ben Nicholson in Gallery 5. ...

UPDATED - A Pair Of Bristols

Advantages: fun things to do
Disadvantages: the zoo is expensive, Blaise Castle can be a bit dangerous

ploughed money into it and the playground is wonderful now. It is split into two areas - a big sandpit with slides, swings, a see-saw, roundabout and other fun stuff for the little ones. Then a larger area for bigger kids, including climbing frames, tyre swing, a big fort and other intimidating equipment which kids love and parents watch anxiously from a few feet away. The "official" attraction there is the Blaise Castle House, which has apparently been part of the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery since 1949. It is an impressive building to look at and inside it contains rooms of old household equipment, old clothes, an old fashioned school room, a collection of old toys and so on. You can easily spend half an hour there, although the kids do get bored after a few visits and some of the models can be a bit spooky for younger ...

Review of Bristol in General

I am not a Number!

Advantages: Quick, reasonably priced
Disadvantages: Not Japanese, formulaic

, the Bristol branch is strategically located within the city, that is it's in exactly the right place to snare its target clientele. The restaurant is in Bristol's upmarket Clifton district, a stone's throw from the Wills Memorial Building (the jewel in the crown of sprawling Bristol University) and the City Museum and Art Gallery. It is opposite Sainsbury's supermarket and Borders bookshop, both of which offer late night shopping and it is within easy reach of many pubs and clubs. It's close to Bristol's two most concentrated areas of nightlife, Whiteladies Road and Corn Street/City Centre without actually being in either, thereby avoiding the worst of the late night rowdiness. This restaurant is therefore ideally placed to attract the students, the arty crowd, the well-heeled Clifton residents, the pre-clubbers and the late-night shoppers. No ...

Mi Bristol Es Su Bristol

Advantages: Beautiful, historic, welcoming, cosmopolitan
Disadvantages: Traffic and parking

on the outskirts and make use of park and ride schemes situated on the Northern and Southern edges of the city.  By train Bristol is served by a small local rail network linking the suburbs with the city centre. There are also rail services between Bristol and the nearby historic spa city of Bath.  By Boat The river has always been the life-blood of the city of Bristol, reaching right up into the harbour at the city centre. In recent years, large stretches of the riverside have seen massive investment, with exciting new leisure facilities and accommodation springing up. A walk along the river is an essential part of a visit to Bristol, taking in cosmopolitan riverside cafes and restaurants, art galleries, the @ Bristol hands-on science museum, the Watershed media centre with its arthouse cinema and exhibition centre ...
