I Didn't Want to Leave Lovely Holland House
Advantages: Comfortable, clean, not far from station or city centre. Very high standard of rooms. Disadvantages: Poor TV reception, terrible tea at breakfast!
The Mercure chain owns two hotels in Bristol. One is the Brigstow in Welsh Back, a busy area for nightlife right beside the river. The second is the Holland House Hotel and Spa, only five minutes walk from the Brigstow but in a quieter spot on Redcliffe Hill. Choosing the quieter option, I stayed for a Saturday night at the four star Holland House in July 2009.
First Impressions
After travelling by train, I had a walk of around seven minutes ... ...again. Although the price was higher than I would usually pay, we all need a taste of luxury now and then!

Highly recommended
Advantages: Very clean, good facilities, friendly staff, EXCELLENT food Disadvantages: Car park exit tickets with time limit!
This is one of the best hotels I have stayed in.
The rooms were very clean and in great condition with all the usual extras available- mini bar, tea and coffee making faclities, complimentary shampoos etc., TV.
The highlight of my stay at the hotel was the amazing breakfast....anything you could possibly want and no choosing between continental and full english- you could have it all! The hot breakfast included eggs (scrambled and fried), bacon ... ...fried bread, mushrooms, tomatoes and fresh toast, all cooked to perfection. Then there was a choice of pastries and croissants that you could heat up yourself on a little grill with a conveyer belt (!) and have with any jam or honey. THEN there was a choice of cereals, dried fruits and selection of yoghurts (Muller Fruit Corners included!) and finally a selection of fresh fruits (not tinned). And of course there was fresh coffee, tea and fruit juices. ...

Beauty on the Inside
Advantages: Newly refurbished, near train station Disadvantages: Not very car-friendly
Arriving by car is an experience... although there is on-site parking facilities (you'll have to pay more for the experience) it wasn't a very inviting prospect. You'll need to fight you're way into the hotel through a back entrance to retrieve a code for the prison-style car park that you'll experience. Although a slightly traumatic experience - condemning your car to behind bars - at least you can believe it is safe.
However, in other ways the ... ...helpful. The rates are reasonable for it's central position - one which is especially convenient if you arrive by train (temple meads is literally across the road).
As the rooms go, they are clean and basic. But you may miss that nice little bath. I did. The hotel has been recently refurbished which means everything on the inside should be lovely, but the interior designers apparently dislike the concept of a bath tub.
As for breakfast, it's nice ...

Holiday Inn Bristol (Filton) - Loved it!
Advantages: Great value, staff attitude/professionalism,cleanliness, facilities Disadvantages: External appearance
...the first visit to the Holiday Inn at Filton.
About 3or4 miles from the city centre, the hotel is just off J1 of the m32 and about 1 mile from J19 of the m4. Set in acres of park and woodland the only problem with the hotel is the rather dated exterior which could do with a freshen up.
At initial reception we found the welcome to be genuinely warm and friendly. We received a brief rundown of the hotel facilities and services, and all my questions ... ...Nice indoor pool and fitness facilities were also available for hotel guests and as a membership club for non residents.
My wife and I were most impressed by the Holiday Inn Filton and will most definitely stay again in the near future. I have no hesitation in recommending. ...

Hotel du vin is a corker!
Advantages: Fantastic bed, monsoon shower, great food, beautiful linen, central location, classy Disadvantages: not cheap!
...sommalier to chambermaid.
The hotel is located so you can "do" the city centre including @ bristol (the science museum), the now trendy harbourside development, the imax cinema - if its still open - and it is only a stone's throw to the cathedral - brilliant traditional choir - go and sit in a 5.15 evensong every weekday if you can.
Expect to pay £150 for a double room for the night. Oooh so worth it if you are looking for a bit of luxury.
They ...
