I did try to book a room at the Britannia Hotel, Birmingham, a three star hotel, but try as I might no-one would answer the telephone so I ended up booking another ‘posh’ hotel according to some at the Ciao meet! I am glad I was not actually staying overnight, when I realised that there was no disabled facilities. And on the Saturday of the 'Meet' I needed to used my wheel chair as my back was hurting and walking distance for me is now very difficult.
**The Arrival**
On arriving the revolving doors had to be opened to allow me in and a ramp was put down, thus allowing me access to the reception area. I was squashed along with my husband whilst the ramp was taken out of the cupboard near to the doorway. It was not a pleasant experience (I can tell you!).
The hotel boasted two lifts, but alas only one was working on the day of the Ciao meet. This meant difficulties for the able bodied in the building, as the hotel had nine floors. All the conference facilities were on the second floor or above as the hotel is built over the surrounding shops.
**The Facilities**
The conference room, used for the meet was on the second floor. It was large and spacious and great for being in a wheel chair. The room however, was very hot due to lack of air conditioning and also no windows. I dread to think how the hotel would cope if all people allowable (up to 340 people) were to meet in these feature rooms.
Later in the evening matters improved immensely, several coach parties of older people (possibly SAGA tours) arrived and inundated the reception. Reception is not particularly spacious and when there were crowds of people checking in, with copious amounts of luggage, for an overnight stay, the space is greatly diminished. Following this all of them wished to make use of the lift (only one remember) as the rooms allocated were in the main up on the seventh and ninth floors! As a user of the premises I could not reach the lift due to all the bodies in the entrance hall.
According to the website for the Britannia hotel, there was a Restaurant & Bars. Well the bar that we were asked to use was on the Mezzanine (floor). Great, when the hotel was full and there was only one lift working! I was left high and dry (well sweaty!) on the second floor, reliant on others to get me drinks from the open bar on a lower floor. I was also unable to try the restaurant as the manager was not avalible till 7pm and no other member of staff ‘could not take a booking for a table reservation’. Pizza hut served my dinner (and at least another sixteen “Ciaoers”) that evening!
There were no public disabled toilets and I did ask staff if there were any disabled toilets. Help I almost wet myself once and Shane was also caught in the ladies toilets, wasn’t he Allie! (Well he was actually helping me and not being a peeping Tom).
The hotel was actually a beautiful Victorian edifice but undergoing refurbishment. The pictures in the building were absolutely stunning and the hotel’s structure inside was exquisite. The staff were friendly to me at reception, even helping to get items for the ‘children’s treasure hunt’, but this attitude was not reflected by the incompetent bar and restaurant staff.
**Costs**
Doubles from £50 Singles from £45
I did not get to go in any of the guest rooms but Shane, Allie and Karen assure me that they were not suitable for my needs.
I would like to go back in a year’s time when the refurbishment has been completed. My advice currently for anyone in a wheelchair, is that maybe this hotel is not for you.

**A Note for Ophelia**
Offy you did well to give us such a lovely day but the hotel let itself down. I believe that everyone who attended the ‘Meet’ had a great time. Thank you.
Advantages: Couldn't fault the company :-) Disadvantages: Where do I start???
Some of you may have already read my account of the Ciao meet, but for those that weren’t there – or for those who prefer their opinions to be a little more understandable and a little less up-in-the-clouds-somewhere-in-Doolallyville, I will combine my review of this hotel with a few more bits about the meeting. Hopefully this will please everyone ;-)
Like Kazziebears, I am not used to staying in hotels very often, so the Ciao meet was ... ...looking forward to it. As it was, I didn’t get to bed ‘til gone 3am and was up around 8am, so spent very little time in my bed. (And no, I didn’t spend any time in anyone else’s bed either!) But I saw enough to form an opinion.
Allie and I arrived there on the Saturday morning and tried to check in. We were told we couldn’t until 1pm, although this was extended until 2pm at some point later. The two women behind reception ...

Advantages: Convenient for shopping, relatively cheap...and Oh the breakfasts!! Disadvantages: The lack of air con, the decor, the lack of communication between staff.
...op in question!!
The Britannia Hotel, Birmingham…as if you didn’t know!
I don’t frequent hotels as a rule, you might know that by some of the comments I have left after ops by other members who do stay in them on a regular basis, I do so enjoy reading about them, and so I had no expectations of what this place was going to be like. Of course I hoped that it would be fantastic but at the end of the day. The hotel wasn’t the real reason for me heading ... ...thing that really let the Britannia hotel down was the unbelievably oppressive heat in the whole place. The coolest area I found was the stair well and that was when Sandrabarber was taking Moose and I down to the cellars, or so I thought, when we went to get drinks!! The conference room that we were given exclusive use of was the hottest of all; thank goodness then that the whole of Ciao didn’t turn up, all those sweaty bodies…ewww!!!! They did ...

Advantages: We were there !!!! Disadvantages: We were there :(
We are all probably going to say the same things but I guess due to being one of the select group wheelchair users my opinion may be a little different. ** Enter Stage Left***
I arrive with a sense of trepidation . I do not know what put more fear into me , actually meeting Trampus or the 'ramp of death' (TM) that they had in a bid for wheelchair access. Sarah is actually a pussycat, the ramp however remained to be the spawn of satan. Magically ... ...The coffee table was also positioned just at the bottom of it.
Huzzah. I was hoping to drink myself under a table not be launched over it. In fact it the ramp-table vaulting could have been a worthy game. Marks out of ten for my star jump anyone?
*** Ring my bell***
Having survived the perils of the said ramp, I went to reception to be told that they needed to sort my room out for wheelchair access. From the length of time it took them , I could ...

Advantages: We had the Ciao meet there, some of us didn't pay much for the rooms. Disadvantages: The seagulls, the clock, the heat, the fire hazards, the crap service, oh just knock the place down and be done with it!
Well, you must have known this was coming, how could I possibly pass up the chance to slag off this hotel? No way was this going to pass me by but as it has already been written about too many times I thought I would do it with a twist, well I nicked Deano's idea seeing as he stole my title. You see, I am almost in the Bronze brigade, hopefully after you lot reading this I will be so I couldn't just do an ordinary opinion now could I?
So welcome ... ...hopefully one of those Bronzey wotsits at the end of it all.
I think I must have been one of the first to book into the Sh*tannia, I had heard they didn't have too many Double or twin rooms so I wanted to get in first. I booked online, which gave me a discount of £10 on my £110 double room. £100 is not a bad superPRICEe to pay for a whole weekend I thought, I should have known then something was a bit OFFy.
A few days before the actual meet I found ...

Advantages: Excellent company Disadvantages: Too hot for comfort, short of staff, only one lift working, noisy
My first impression of the Britannia wasn't very favourable. That could have been because the instructions that the hotel had sent on how to get there from the M6 were not very good and after driving around for ages only the car park which isn't attached to the hotel could be found. We lugged our cases up and down steps through a shopping centre after Mel asked for directions and were slightly travel worn by the time we found the entrance that was ... ...then down a rather steep wheelchair ramp into a dark looking reception. We had no problems checking in, but I was witness to two of our group checking in the next day and a mix up which meant that they had been given a double room instead of 2 singles. The receptionist promised that something would be sorted for them but it wasn't and they had to rearrange things themselves - that's their story though. There were 2 lifts but one of them was broken ...

I stayed at this hotel for work purposes on Monday 3rd March in a single room on the sixth floor. We paid £70 B&B.
My initial reaction was to be extremely negative about this hotel, however, on reflection i think it is important to point out some of its good points. I would not say it was an enjoyable experience, however, it was adequate and i've had worse!
On the plus side -
This is a proper city centre hotel - right in the centre of town, close to shops. If you are visiting Birmingham to shop, this is perfect.
The kettle and toilet were clean, which is always a good start!
The member of staff who booked me in was pleasant and helpful. There was an error with our booking, we had 4 rooms booked, but only two of us were on the list. She gave me the list to check through - which had other guest's names and personal details ...
Advantages: Cheap, great location Disadvantages: Thin walls, decor has seen better days
I have stayed in hotels from time to time after a night out as it often works out as cheaper than getting a taxi home for me! This is what first brought me to stay at the Britannia, and I have stayed there a total of 4 times so far.

expensive. So, it was time for some shopping around?
Doing a load of searching and whatnot on Google, I stumbled upon this, the Britannia Hotel. Located down New Street, Birmingham, and at just £35 per night as the advanced fee ? it was a bargain.
Finding The Hotel
Being pretty poor at most sort of planning, I didn?t really take much note of exactly where the Hotel was, just that it was somewhere down New Street. So, it actually took us a bit of finding, but that was mainly due to us not knowing Birmingham at all. All I remember now, is it is next to Primark, so that?s that.
The Room
We had room 225, located right at the end of the maze-like corridor, on floor two. Opening the door, the room was pretty much how we expected it to be ? as basic as humanly possible. Two Beds, sat next to each other, with a tiny set of drawers to ...
