My boyfriend and I stayed at the Brittania in May 2002. Its within easy reach of Victory rail station as well as picidilly. The Manchester Evening News Arena (M.E.N.) is next to victory station and is withing easy taxi drive away. Those more able can walk the distance in about 15 minutes.
It is a nicely set-out hotel and the rooms are clean and spacious. The grand staircase in the middle of the entrance hall is a sight to see and the three story building is a marvel of archetecture. It was orinally built in the 1800's for use as a flour mill and the old style atmosphere still pervaides the building.
The room we stayed in provided ample room for clothes to be unpacked, tea/coffee facilities as well as a trouser press and and iron. Local literature and postcards were provided. The bathroom was clean and well presented, with more than enough clean towels.
Inside the residents bar which I believe is open 24 hours for residents only, is a large display case sporting numerous old bottles and pottery. Worth browsing. There are three resturants and a nightclub within the hotel building and all are easily accessible. The nightclub offers free entrance to hotel residents.
Directly over the road from the hotel is a yates pub which offers great meals at good prices. Another late night pub is on the other corner.
We found the staff to be efficient and friendly at all times and they were happy to provide local information if requested. The only slight problem I encountered was the large front steps, as a semi-disabled person it was realy only an inconvenience that took a relative small time to overcome, but I could see no alternative access for wheelchair users. The only parking within reach is in the adjacent street but the cost was high. £14.50 per 24 hours. It was a bit far to make carrying luggage easy and would not suit a wheelchair bound person due to traffic on the road to cross and the condition of the pavements.
Overall I found the hotel in good taste and would happily return in the future if in the area.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
this would not suit me because of poor disability access.
