Anti-luxury in Docklands

Advantages: Good location for Docklands and City Airport
Disadvantages: Overpriced, low standards, bad service

...I eventually settled on the Britannia International, a four star hotel in Canary Wharf. I figured that I'd get more for my buck being a little further out from the centre of London, and being in the heart of a business district I thought I'd get a great weekend deal. It was close to London City airport and was surrounded by great restaurants.

I booked through Opodo, although the hotel was listed on all the usual hotel search engines, ...
.../> As it turns out, Britannia is actually a chain of 3 and 4 star hotels across the UK, which I hadn't realised at the time of booking.

The hotel offers 2 classes of room below the room I reserved - on Opodo the prices were £10 and £20 less than for the jacuzzi room. Every person that checked in whilst I was checking in (of which there were a large number!) had paid different amounts, ranging from £70 up to £170 per night from what ... more

Poor service, tacky interior, otherwise OK...

Advantages: Convenient location for Canary Wharf visitors
Disadvantages: Poor service, bizarre interior styling

I've staid at the Britannia for more than 50 nights over the past few years. The one thing I learned from this is that, actually, the other reviewers of this hotel were not having bad luck. The hotel is spectacularly tacky (think what would happen if you give a big interior design budget to East Enders' Peggy Mitchell) and service is consistently worse than any similarly-priced London hotel. The rooms themselves are quite OK, if you don't mind the ...
...what makes this hotel truly unique is not the interior design but the blend of 'don't care/whatever' attitude of staff and the fact that their booking system is based on chaos theory. It is very common to spend 10-15 minutes (which is long, in real time) waiting to check in. You have a 15% chance of your booking not being found (which is a big risk, in real life) and a near-100% chance of seeing some other guests being driven to desperation because ...

Big disappointment!

Advantages: Good location
Disadvantages: Poor standard

My husband and I planned a weekend away to London a few weeks back. Normally we'd stay either in Piccadily or Leicester Square but this time we thought we'd venture out a bit and try somewhere different. The Canary Wharf seemed a good choice as there were also a good selection of shops and restaurants there. We waited in the queue for 40mins before anyone could attend to us. By this time we were pretty fed up as we just wanted to relax and chill ...
...we have one? The room that we had booked (jacuzzi room) was not available but instead we could have a twin room. A twin room for a couple who've gone away on a romantic weekend together!! So, instead of upgrading us for their mistake they were downgrading us to a smaller room. Of course we kicked up a fuss! In the end they found us a double room on the 12th floor (after previously telling us there were no double rooms left!) and gave us free breakfast ...

Nice but nasty

Advantages: Opposite Canary Wharf, easy to get to, not too expensive
Disadvantages: Poor service, unhelpful staff

The International Hotel, Marsh Wall, Docklands, London is one of 19 Hotels in the chain of Britannia Hotels. It is described as "A luxury hotel and superbly appointed business and conference centre close to the the heart of the financial capital of our country" The brochure goes on to say ".....impeccable service and sumptuous comfort in elegant surroundings; it fulffils you every need." Unfortunately on my recent visit I found the service awful, the staff incompetent and I would definitely not describe the accomodation as sumptuous or elegant. The public areas are nice, spacious and fairly grand and there are plenty of large leather sofas to fall into. There is a nice part of the lounge which juts out the front of the hotel and looks over to the impressive Canary Wharf. In general, the Hotel was nicely furnished ...
