As an ex-employee of Air Miles, may i urge you to take advantage of the scheme and covert the points from your Sainsbury Reward Card into Air Miles and save money on foreign travel. I left because the job was boring, not because of the quality of product

HOW IT WORKS
For every 250 reward points you can gain for your loyal shopping in Sainsburys, you can choose to get a £2.50 voucher to be taken off your shopping, or 40 Air Miles. You now get 2 points per £1 that you spend on your shopping but bonus awards are awarded on a wide range of products - especially bacon for some reason. Just take your voucher to customer service desk and your balance will be transferred in into central Air Miles scheme.

WHERE ELSE CAN I GET AIR MILES?
Air Miles are available from an increasing number of sources and they can all be put on the one balance. Natwest, Shell, Flying Flowers, RAC - these are examples of collection points. The scheme at Amerada gas is also improved. If you book a normal, fare-paying flight through the Air Miles number, you can also earn miles on that.

WHAT WILL IT GET ME
You airmiles are transferred into a balance and you will receive regular statements. Miles can be redeemed for free flights (apart from airport tax) and you can book and check availability on flights by calling the Aior Miles number. 450 miles will get you a flight to Paris (return) and something like 1300 will enable you to enjoy a free trip to Prague. Part-cash offers are also available for longer haul destinations such as New York and are excellent value. Flights are normally British Airways but with the 'One World' alliance, you can use them on other airlines as well

ANCILLARY PRODUCTS
The call centre can also offer you good rates on accomodation (of all ranges) and car hire. There is the option to exchange miles in return for money off ancillary products but it is not a good conversion rate and wouldn't reccomend it.

STAFF
Based in Crawley, West Sussex, the staff are usually helpful and because they work on commission, will do their best to find a good deal for you. Open from 8-10 Monday to Friday and 9-5 Weekends, they are easily contactable but avoid calling right at the end of the day because they are likely to be impatient and want to get you off the phone before they go home. Also, if more than one person in the company has the same christian name, they use fake aliases which can get confusing

CONCLUSION
Air Miles is an excellent scheme. It is better value for European trips and would strongly reccomend it. Availability can get tight but this is to be expected and shows the popularity of the scheme. It works out much better value than getting the £2.50 off voucher - work it out!

Do the airmiles have a use by date or can you keep them indefinately?

Useful op - if anyone reads this from April 2002 onwards then be aware that Sainsburys have been replaced by Tescos as the supermarket partner. It's still 40 miles for a £2.50 voucher.

Thanks for coming back and asking me about details. In fact, Airmiles still exist as a company, mileage programme and part of the BA Group, BUT in September 2000, UK resident mebers of the Executive Club were given a choice whether they wanted their miles/points to remain under the old Air Miles Scheme or switch to the new BA Miles. I would expect that 99% of members will have switched, because BA Miles is lots more attractive. (see www.britishairways.com/bamiles) Overseas members like myself operate under the Global Miles Scheme, which is terribly outdated and unefficient. Hope we will get offered BA Miles soon, too. I hope this explained it. Regards, Hans
