Last year i did a flight of Belfast-London-LA-Brisbane-NYC-London-Belfast. This was a code share flight with two other airlines who i will review in their respective sections. I have also done a review of the BA travel shop that i bought the tickets from.
The London-LA and NYC-London legs of my flight were with BA. Overall the flight cost just over £800 which i thought was good. I had never flown with BA before and i guess i had high standards and expectations.
My baggage was checked through from Belfast-so thankfully i didn't have to check in at Heathrow.
Firstly-the Planes
The planes were very clean-and everything worked the way it was meant to. The condition of the interior was excellent and not threadbare like a few planes i have been on. They had a reasonable entertainment system onboard that kept me occupied for most of the flight. On a scale of 1 to 5 i would rate it a 4.
The food was okay-anyone who travels in economy expects your usual run of the mill airplane food. It was well presented and edible-unlike some of my own cooking!
The seats were not the most comfortable simple because of leg room. As with all my airline reviews, i usually write from the perspective of my height which is 6'4". Not a huge height in this day and age but tall enough. BA has a seat pitch of 31". Bare in mind Easyjet is 29". So for a longer flight of up to 9 hours you get an extra 2" leg space-not much i can tell you. The seats are also a little on the narrow side (honestly i'm not portly!), but this does seem to be a trend with all airlines. I spoke to a woman beside me who felt the leg room was poor and she was 5'6"-so any tall people out there reading this-bare it in mind.
The cabin crew i felt let the company down. Though please remember that this is my opinion of the flight crews i travelled with-perhaps i was just unlucky. I watched an elderly lady (70+) brought her husband onboard in his wheelchair. She had a piece of hand luggage which was average sized. She asked the flight attendant for help and was told that due to health and safety-the lady had to be able to put the baggae up into the overhead locker with no assistance. The woman had a hard time reaching the locker let along placing the bag there. Thankfully a man beside her came to her aid all while the attendant stood and watched. I've flown a few times and i have never seen this done before. Personally i thought it was appalling and really embarassing for BA to conduct themselves that way. Throughout the flight i was very reluctant to call for any of the staff. I left school about six years ago. However when dealing with the cabin crew i felt like a young boy standing before the teacher. Its hard to put into words but the best i can say is i felt that they were looking down their noses at me. I've spoke to many people both at home and on the net who have had similar experiences and also felt they were treated the same-so i don't feel paranoid about saying it.
The assistants who stand in the terminals and give out help were excellent. I thought they were a great idea. Basically they directed people where they needed to be going, whether BA passengers or not. Very friendly and very accurate with their advice. Thankfully the restored a bit of faith in BA customer service.
All in all-not the worse flight i had been on. Definately not the standard that i expected or that they projected.
