I must tell you about an excellent family run holiday park. It’s called Pentewan Sands and is situated near St Austell in Cornwall. My family have been going they’re for their holidays since 1965 and in those 37 years a lot of improvements have been made.

The camp itself is nestled in a small quiet bay and is surrounded by countryside and benefits from a private beach. Another benefit is that no pets are allowed so that you never have to worry about children stepping in dog mess. The park has been open for over 60 years and is still run by the Tremaine family. It spans an impressive 32-acre site, which has 120 luxury caravans and 500 touring pitches.

Nearby are the lovely fishing village of Mevagissy, a large indoor market that opens Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, The famous Eden Project, The Lost Gardens Of Heligan, Charlestown , Carlyon bay and St Austell town which boasts all the normal shops you need. There is a Large Asda supermarket and a Tesco Supermarket not very far away.

When my family started going there, there was only a few concrete chalets, no lighting on the camp and in the chalets they had their own toilets ( which was a luxury )and stone showers that you stepped into. Like I said things have certainly improved over the time. There is now an outdoor heated swimming pool, The Beach Club, security gates, full lighting and security guards that walk the camp all day and night.

When I was a child I loved the freedom of the camp, my parents knew that I was safe and I was a typical tomboy who loved climbing trees (well falling out of them mainly). I am now 29 years old and there are still loads of us that go on holiday together. Every year there is 3 or more static caravans housing my family? I think the site manager Graham thinks we are the mafia or something.

The beach club is great for children, when my cousins come on holiday with us they enjoy all the activities. There is also an adventure playground situated near the beach . The children’s club runs throughout the day if parents wish to have a peaceful few hours. The children are usually taken on one or two trips that don’t cost the parents very much. My cousins didn’t want to go so I’m not sure of the price.

In the evening the beach club has got a bar and runs entertainment which is surprisingly good. I have watched many cabarets there over the years and have enjoyed the majority of them. The beach club starts at 6.30 with games and a disco for the kids. Every week there is a talent show for the children and the club member’s help the children practice for the night so that everything runs smooth. Parents have no need to worry, even though the club doesn’t shut until 1am the children can stay as late as you like.

There is also an amusement arcade, shop, restaurant and take away on the camp .The camp also boasts it’s own slipway and launch service and boats are welcome, for those people into water sports.

The village of Pentewan is very small and is also mainly owned by the same family, all you have to do to get there is to walk across the old harbour bridge. In the village there is a cycle hire shop, post office and an excellent pub called the Ship Inn that does terrific value bar snacks or meals. Right beside the village are some amazing river walks that also have a cycle track. Further along the road back towards St Austell, on the right hand side is a small pony hire business .

The camp has a strict policy that if you cause a disturbance through extreme rowdiness you will be removed from the camp immediately.

The accommodation is luxurious, some might think the prices are high but for the security and peace of mind we think it’s worth it. For an 8 berth caravan prices start from £395 per week rising to £630 a week. If you want an early or late holiday, between the 23d March - 31st May and 14th September - 2nd November (dates vary slightly year by year) it will cost you £200 for the largest caravan for a week. You must add £6 booking fee and £6.50 cancellation insurance (total £212.50). If you choose to take two weeks holiday in those bargain periods the second week is half price, but the cancellation insurance changes to £12.50. So if you want a fortnight’s holiday out of peak season and wish to enjoy a fun but relaxing holiday in a safe, secure environment, it will cost you £318.50.

Their phone number is 01726 843485 . They have just launched a website which is worth a browse . www.pentewansands.com .

Since getting married my husband and i purchased a tent . So we have experienced everything the camp has to offer . The shower and laundry facilities are excellent for someone staying on the touring pitches . The is an electric hook up . Which we used to full advantage as we took our TV , Video a fridge a small heater and a fan .
Touring pitches start from £6.65 per night (based on 2 sharing) and rise to £15.70 per night .
Electric hook ups are charged at £2.90 per night and cancellation insurance is £3.25 per week .

An extra bonus for the kids is that there are ducks in the river and they come up to the caravans to be fed ( With their ducklings).

Sounds lovely, more families should keep up traditions like theses instead of breaking the bank every time they want a break. Nice op, ta.
