I've been a member of the diamond club now for almost a year due to my work in London for the past 10 months, basically you get 30 points per flight (Man - LHR) and the free flights start at around 400 points. During the quiet periods BMI have double your points offers on flights so your points add up quickly.
The member lounges are very tidy and have a great selection of drinks, the London Heathrow has an additional lounge for silver & gold members the difference being that it has a bar and doesn't get as busy.
The Manchester lounge is quite small and also has a small separate area for Silver/Gold members but does get very busy in the morning . . .. you have a choice of fresh tea/coffee plus many juices and the usual cakes/croissants.
The staff at both airports are always very polite/helpful and up for some pleasant chat.
Another reviewer pointed out that the lack of food is a disappointment, which i agree with, in the evening you get a selection of cheeses, cakes and nuts which isn’t great when you've done a hard days slog . . . . added that the food on the flights in the evenings is rather poor (a very dour pasta & chicken) a sandwich would be nice. I feel this is where BA have the advantage . . . there lounge is far superior to BMI, you get a great selection of food plus computers to send email/browse the net etc which are free and the food on the flights is better.
BMI also operate a tier system of the diamond club, once you hit 500 member points you go to Silver and 1000 is Gold . . . both of these give you a dedicated line for booking flights and preferential treatment for booking steats etc.
The BMI programme is great for the frequent flyer and because of the bigger seats, friendly staff and lack of queues they got my business over BA.

Have only flown with British Midland once, many years ago, and certainly not the Diamond Club, felt it compared well with British Airways, although they did ply us with a Champagne Breakfast on a very short flight - suffered for it later I can tell you.
