FAMILY FUN, with a bit of culture thrown in!
Review of Bretagne (France) by lollie67

Advantages: Great for kids, full of history, unspoilt countryside and fabulous beaches.
Disadvantages: You will need your car to get the most out of it.

Way back when, on holidays past, my hubbie and I only had ourselves to please. We could book holidays at the last minute, go pretty much anywhere we fancied and when we got there all we needed was a good book, a patch of sand by the sea and a decent bar close by, to be happy. Now we have two wilfull and lively boys in tow our holidays need to be very, very different. For a start our holidays need to be planned well in advance. The requirements are ...
...kids to do, preferably without too much adult supervision so we can get a rest - somewhere you can get to easily without the kids getting bored - not too hot, not too cold and all within a budget. A conventional package holiday to one of the Spanish Costas say, could cost the average family thousands of pounds and even a stay in a tiny caravan in England during August can cost as much as £700 a week! Luckily we have the answer pretty much on our ... Read review

TWINNED CITIES.
Review of Pontivy, France by thingywhatsit

Advantages: Its a super town.
Disadvantages: None at all.

...in a town such as Pontivy, in all seasons, seems to light up the world with a vibrance that I enjoy very much. The City display wonderful floral hanging baskets on the bridges and these and bright and welcoming and last well into the Autumn months. WHAT ARE THE ATTRACTIONS OF PONTIVY ? For me, I believe this is a town that offers everything for everyone. Even when you go on holiday to the calm and remote of a country cottage, you need a place where ...
...Within easy driving distance of Pontivy, you have the Guelerdan Lake area which is a little like the Lake District. Wander further afield and you have coastline and the sandy beaches of Carnac, or more wild and natural beaches of Quiberon and its peninsular. There is so much to see within the area of Pontivy that it makes a super base for a holiday. Many of the “gite” complexes or holiday rentals in the area are extremely rural whilst ... Read review

St Malo - a French treasure
Review of St Malo (France) by KeithH

Advantages: Beauty, culture
Disadvantages: Crowds

My strongest memory of St Malo is of my last sight of this beautiful city as I waited for the ferry home. Standing on the dockside, I watched the setting sun, very low on the horizon, bathe the ramparts in a wonderful golden light. The sun's reflection glinted from the windows of the hundreds of houses overlooking the sea. St Malo was a sparkling jewel. Sadly, a few short minutes later the sky was dark and my stay was at an end. There is something ...
...But thousands are ensnared by St Malo's charm - and therein lies a problem! I visited St Malo for the first time in the mid-1980s at the start of a cycling holiday. My wife and I pedalled off the ferry and into the city early one morning, stopping for coffee and croissants at a small cafe before launching into our great adventure. I distinctly remember how peaceful were the cobbled streets - the air was made French by the whiff of Gitanes and the ... Read review

Island adventure
Review of Island of Brehat by weetoon

Advantages: Beautiful and unspoilt.
Disadvantages: Can get a little busy.

The island of Bréhat, actually two islands joined by a tiny bridge built in the 18th Century by Vauban (the man responsible for much of the fortifications built around France at the time), is situated North-Northeast of Paimpol, in the Côtes d'Armor, Brittany. We decided to visit one day, not knowing very much about it other than it was meant to be very pretty and cars aren't allowed there. If you have read my review on the island of Gigha (Scotland), ...
...Paimpol and from there, the island is well signposted. Five kilometres after Paimpol, you will come to the 'Pointe de l'Arcouest', the point where you can get a boat to the island. The 'Vedettes de Bréhat', a boat company, has got the monopoly for transporting people to and from the island. You can leave your car at the car park, either near the wharf or a bit further up the hill. The car park cost €5, and they undertake to check the car park regularly ... Read review

THE MORBIHAN EXTENDS THE HAND OF WELCOME
Review of Morbihan, France by thingywhatsit

Advantages: Something for everyone.
Disadvantages: Inclement weather in Winter.

Rugged coastline that beckons the visitor and the hiker to come closer and enjoy lays stretched from the northern extremities of this county right down to the South. Rocks that have been washed by the ocean over centuries look out towards the sea and offer some of the best views in Brittany. Little walkways take the adventurous to places from bygone years, through walkways that take you to little coves that have been there since time began and that ...
...Morbihan has much to offer and does so with a generosity, and an abundance to please all. Its natural beauty is rich and plentiful, and for the more adventurous holidaymaker, there are the undiscovered places away from the crowd, places where you can feel alone with nature and safe with the world. Its beauty extends from coastline to inland and the choice is ripe for the picking. From small market towns nestled in sheltered nooks and crannies, to ... Read review
