We've been using Brittany ferries for years and rate them really highly. We live in Cornwall and have a house in south west France and have tried all sorts of ways of getting there - trains, planes etc but this is by far the easiest and most pleasant way to travel.

Nowadays we always book on line and it is an excellent and easy to use service - everything is done on line - you get the times, make the booking and print your own ticket. As we travel a lot we have joined the Frequent Travellers'Club and we get good discounts. The address is http://www.brittanyferries.co.uk

Going on the Brittany Ferry is a good start to the holiday. The check in is usually good and sometimes you can get on board early and enjoy a good meal in the restaurant.

There seems to be a lot to do on board most of the ferries but we just book a cabin and go to sleep for most of the journey as we have a long drive when we get to France and are usually worn out by the rush to get to Plymouth in the first place. We take a cabin every time whether it is a day or a night crossing and this is particularly good if it is rough!! The cabin prices vary - a day one is about £15 and a night one about £50 but this all depends on the sort of cabin you go for. At night we will take an inside cabin which is cheaper as it's dark outside anyway! The cabins are always very clean - we always have one with a shower and loo and a shower just before arriving sets us up for the drive. The staff have always been very friendly with us and will help you track down your cabin.

One thing that does bug us about them is that they do not publish their prices - they just give an indication of the more and less expensive crossings. You tell them what you want and they give you a price from that.

Also there seems to be a big difference between the facilities on the boats. The new Pont Aven is excellent with lots of facilities, bars, pools, shops, cinema etc and radios in the cabins but the Pont l'Abbee, for example has less and we always wonder if we pay the same price which ever one we travel on.

Occasionally disembarkation can be slow but I think this is usually due to someone failing to note where they have parked so that they cannot find their car and then nobody can drive off. There is no need to worry about finding your car as they give you a card with the details on as soon as you park. If you want to get off quickly and not hold people up you only have to take note of where you left it and plan your route back!

Also at very busy times they squash a lot of cars in and on the smaller ferries it can be difficult to get in and out for old or disabled people or anyone with children. I've a feeling you can warn them about this and they give you a special sticker for the docker to note if you have a problem - but I'm not sure about this.

Overall we rate them very highly even though they are somewhat expensive. We can now fly to our part of France from Exeter - this is a two hour journey for us or Bristol (a three hour one) but then we would have to add the cost of the extra diesel in the car and the car parking, not to mention the boring hours spent in crowded airports waiting to check in etc and then we would have to hire a car in France which also adds to the price.

Decent review, we use this company quite often and have always been impressed. If you give advanced warning that you are travelling with someone who has a mobility problem, youare ushered onto the ship about 15 mins before the general boarding, and get parked near a passenger lift. Really useful!
