As with most Premier Lodge outlets, it was attached to a pub, and it is here that Breakfast is served. At £6 a head, it certainly isn't cheap, but cereal, yoghurt, juices, toast, croissants and full English breakfast are all inclusive in the price. Picture the scene: my sister's wedding. The ceremony is taking place at a swanky manor house 20 miles from our residence in Solihull. There are 9 rooms available at Grafton Manor, of which I originally had a place.

Change of plans: my female friend, and only friend, is invited because one space at the reception is made available. There is no longer room for both of us at Grafton Manor.

Plan B is incorporated: book in at a hotel nearby, namely the Bromsgrove Premier Lodge. All booking is done via the internet and everything is all present and correct.

Flashback to yesterday, Saturday 28th July, and the day of my beloved sister's wedding day. Because I would be returning to the hotel after midnight, prior arrangements were made to make sure this was ok. I arrived shortly after 12.15 to check in, and after ringing for service (the reception was closed) a man who seemed like he didn't usually perform check-ins took payment and made me sign various documents. The room was ready, somewhat to my surprise. They informed me that to get back into the hotel after 10pm, I would have to key in a 4 digit number to open the doors. This was very straight forward, and after payment of £52 for an ensuite room with a double bed and sofa bed and full "traditional" breakfast in the morning, I resided to my room.

The rooms were relatively spacious for the price, with a large, comfortable double bed, and a similarly bed-like sofa bed. The bathroom contained a bath and shower with all the regular freebies just waiting to be stolen, regular sink and toilet. All was present and correct, but nothing out of the ordinary. The addition of a trouser press was handy, and cupboard space was plentiful. The television contained around 8 channels, some of which were cable, with the opportunity to purchase more "adult" viewing, if you know what I mean!

After returning from the wonderfully perfect wedding day, entrance into the hotel was easy and we retired to bed, following almost my entire family presuming my friend was my girl friend (it doesn't seem allowed for the opposite sex to be merely chums nowadays!). A lack of air conditioning was a severe drawback after one of the hottest days of the year, and so had to resort to sleeping on the tops of the beds. The sofa bed wasn't quite long enough for my 6'2" frame, although I like to scrunch when I sleep anyway!

Overall, the Premier Lodge isn't quite at the forefront of the hotel industry, but never the less serves its purpose as medium-priced accommodation. Not wonderful, but by no means bad. The staff are cheerful and helpful and, although there was a lack of amenities, for a one night stay was sufficient.
