A tribute to the lives and deaths of the Brontes

Advantages: A well-organised museum. Clear information brochure.
Disadvantages: Busy with lots of tourists. Limited access for the physically disabled. No toilets.

The Bronte Parsonage Museum stands a tribute to probably Britain's most famous literary family. The old parsonage was once home to the three famed Bronte sisters for approximately 35 years and is now maintained by the Brontë Society who champion their lives and works.

The tall stone Georgian House was built in 1778. Despite the hoards of visitors (and yes there were hoards when we visited - a usual occurance according to staff at ...
...gravestones) exuding a quiet and somewhat mysterious elegance. It's palladian front door and large sash windows overlookis a large well-organised garden.

We visited on a whim, returning home from Yorkshire on a wet windy weekend. As a long-time reader and admirer of the Brontes, I have wanted to visit for a long time and so when we saw the brown directional signs, we couldn't resist.

We parked in one of the pay and ... more

Bronte Heaven in a Wuthering Heights Setting

Advantages: Bronte fans will love it
Disadvantages: Expensive ticket for a museum which hasn't changed much in years

If you had been around in the 1800s, you may have thought life would be hardest in the London slums. Amazingly life expectancy in a little village near the moors in Yorkshire was about as bad, with a vast proportion of babies dying in their first year of life, and then if you made it past 25 years you were very lucky. The problems suffered by Haworth were all linked to the sewers and disease which one inspector, prompted by the high infant mortality ...
...Famous residents of Haworth at the time suffered a similar short life span. In 1820 Reverend Patrick Bronte brought his wife and six young children: Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Branwell, Emily and Anne. His wife and eldest two daughters died within a few years. The rest of the children including the three famous writers were dead before they were 40. Patrick went on to survive everyone and passed away at the age of 84. Visitors to Haworth and the ...

Bronte Parsonage, Haworth

Advantages: Very interesting and well done
Disadvantages: Restricted access

What is it? The Bronte Parsonage was the home of the three extremely famous sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte who wrote such classic novels as Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Villette, The Tenant of Wildefel Hall and Agnes Grey. They lived and wrote all their novels here with their father the Reverend Patrick Bronte and their brother, Branwell. From the parsonage you can also visit the church and grave yard of Haworth. Mr Nicholls Study (Mr. Nicholls was Charlotte Bronte's husband) 6. The Servants quarters 7. Charlotte Bronte's bedroom 8. The children's nursery and study 9. Rev. Bronte's study 10. Bramwell's studio There is also an exhibition area which changes periodically. All the rooms ...

1 of the best Holiday inn hotels

Advantages: I work there and right next to the motorway
Disadvantages: No lift to second floor

, Galpharm Sports & Events Stadium, Royal Armouries, Bronte Parsonage, Bradford Museum of Film & Photography, Harewood House and a few golf courses. If you fancy having a wedding or other function with it being 2 to 200 people we can cater for everyone. We also have a very nice courtyard for weddings and functions. There are 7 meeting rooms altogether and all of them are located on the ground floor and with air conditioning. Now for my views on the hotel, I've worked there for nearly 7 years and I love working there including going there when I'm off to enjoy the leisure facilities. The staff are really friendly and we have a can-do attitude to make sure the customers stay is enjoyable. The food is done to specification and if you have breakfast go inclusive cause its expensive if you decide to have it in the morning so your not spending ...

Review of Holiday Inn Leeds, Brighouse

Don't Touch That Or You'll Pay!

Advantages: Lovely village, tourist attraction, nice place for walks, nice shops, easy access.
Disadvantages: Few shops for children, expensive, not enough parking on busy days.

Overview and Location: Haworth is a lovely, little village, not far from my home in Bradford. Bradford is an industrial city on the edge of the moors of the Britain's West Yorkshire Pennines (just under 30 miles north are the Yorkshire Dales, now a National Park), and Brontë country which is where Haworth is located. Situated in the Pennine moors just above the Worth Valley, Howarth is famous for its former residents the Brontë sisters, who were born in Thornton near Bradford, but lived and wrote at Haworth Parsonage, which is now a museum, owned by the Brontë Society. Brontë Country is named aptly, as it is where the Brontë sisters (Charlotte, Emily and Anne) lived. They wrote their classic novels, such as Charlotte Brontës 'Jane Eyre', at Haworth Parsonage, and their father, Patrick Brontë, worked opposite the family home as ...

Review of Hawarth (Bradford)

More than you'd expect - rewritten

Advantages: Loads to do and see, all "packed close together" for east access, good transport service
Disadvantages: Shopping (actually its OK but just not great, not when theres Leeds next door), reputation, football lol

should have. A scene from the film Rita, Sue and Bob too was shot here (the one where they go on the trip) and it looks pretty interesting on there and I have been told its pretty good so I'd say - GO FOR IT! Not sure on prices or anything but when (IF!!!) I go I'll add it onto here. --Hawarth-- Ah, more on Hawarth. This really is a lovely part of Bradford and well worth a visit. Here, there is, of course, the Bronte Parsonage Museum as mentioned before, plus a load of "oddity" shops and those lovely old sweet shops you used to see in the good old days. At the bottom of the hill (yes, Hawarth is on a hill) is a lovely pub (drink? me? Don't be silly!) called the New Inn I think but I'm sure someone will correct me on that. Anyway its on your right at the bottom of the hill. The park on your left is nice too. --Cartwright Hall ...
