Read this factual account of Brooklands before you decide on staying here.
Would you stay at Brooklands again if you reserve a room months in advance to arrive and find they have given your room to someone else? We (me and the wife) stay in a lot of hotels, seeing bands around the UK. We were looking forward to a great weekend in Cambridge, and we travelled some distance to get to the hotel… to find the double room ensuite we were looking forward had been given to someone else that day!
When we arrived that afternoon, we knocked several times before someone came to the door. We were then asked our names – this was on the doorstep – and it was very cold. We were kept waiting outside while the person closed the door and checked our booking. I remember thinking this did not look good. Then we were told our room has been given to someone else. The person who made this mistake apparently wasn’t available but we were told it was an emergency: a chap arrived, unbooked, and asked for a room – and they gave him ours! Their excuse was that he was sweating and wasn’t well, and had to go to Addenbrooke’s Hospital! Well, I work in critical care and – while not being an expert in all fields of patient care – I think it’s reasonable to suggest that if this guys condition is that serious, he would be in A&E already, and not requiring OUR FOUR POSTER SUITE and JACUZZI!!!
An incredible excuse – but after 10 minutes, we were offered a double room ensuite, next door to our original one – begging the question, why didn’t they put the guy in there! We had to accept this alternative – but it was no four poster and Jacuzzi – nor was it particularly spacious (it was cramped: you couldn’t quite walk round the bed and the light didn’t work in the shower). In the morning, we made our way to the breakfast room where we found ourselves being served by the actual owner of the property. We had to raise the issue of the mix-up in our accommodation – and then, we received our only apology. Admittedly, she seemed genuinely sorry for what happened, and when we paid, we were charged for the room we stayed in, so we didn’t get anything back (no posh room when we got there, no relaxing stay for me and the wife, and a fair amount of stress too). The breakfast was fine. Would I stay there again? No – I don't think so - I can’t take that risk again.
