~ 17th Century Staying ~

I thought I would do a quick review on the places I have visited this bank holiday weekend. This weekend was my Nan’s 70th birthday and to celebrate, our family which included 22 of us drove up to Caldicot in Wales for a Medieval Feast and party. My next review will tell you more about that but this review is about where we spent the night after our celebration. We stayed at a Bed and Breakfast not far from the castle where we had our party. It is found in the village of Caldicot which only took us an hour and ten mins from Bath. Brooklands Motel is found on the by pass B4245 as you enter Caldicot which meant it was not hard to find. Well I found it straight away there were a few that got a bit lost. There is a large green sign seen from the road saying Brooklands Motel. My first impression of the place was a good one. Well presented and clean. The garden was bright and tidy and we all met in the hotel car park. When we entered the reception the lady behind the counter who introduced her self as Judy, welcomed us and sorted out our room keys.

~ STAFF ~

Judy who is the manager of the B&B was very polite and helpful. As there were twenty two of us it must have been hard to organise everything. She gave everyone there room keys and helped with anything we asked. The breakfast was also nicely done and she cleared away our dishes and was in the conservatory if we needed anything else. I found her very kind and easy to get on with.
The staff was very family orientated and they took a special liking to Ruby my niece. They made sure she had everything she needed and made my sister feel relaxed about having her there. We also have a cousin who has difficulties with walking and has crutches. The motel has easy access and though they had a ground floor room to make it easier for him, the rest of the motel was easy for him to get around.

~ ROOMS ~

I shared a twin room with my cousin and found that they were in very nice condition. When I received my key I went up to room 5 to take a look. This room was situated on a terrace and it had a balcony with a bench which I thought was good. Once I entered I was surprised by how spacious the room was. There was plenty of room for two people and I really liked the way the room was set out. The quality of the rooms was excellent. It had everything that you really needed for the stay. The beds were of an average size but were very comfy and there were spare blankets if needed. The rooms were slightly old fashioned but as this is a 17th century property they have kept the feel of this which I liked. The rooms had a sofa and TV which only had the normal five channels but I was happy with that as I did not spend that much time in the room anyway. There was a kettle and mugs places out with coffee, tea and sugars for the morning. The en suite bathrooms were nice and of a good size, with a very nice shower and all the facilities worked well. As there were many of us we took up most of the hotel.
I had a quick look at the other rooms people stayed in. My sister had a double room which she had to bring a travel cot for my niece. It was also of a good size and carpeted so my niece could not hurt herself.
The family rooms were also great with a double bed for the parents and single for a child. There was also a room which my aunt had with two singles so she, her husband and two children all had one room. They were all provided with extra pillows and duvets. Some of the views from the rooms were really nice and ours overlooked the gardens.

~ BREAKFAST ~

The bed and breakfast supplies a continental breakfast not a full cooked meal as many of the men were disappointed at! I thought it had a good selection of food and nice tea and coffee. There was everything from cereal, toast, bagels and fruit. The breakfast ran from 8-10 which was nice as many places only do this until 9. It gave us chance to sleep off the alcohol and get down for food at a reasonable time. It was not rushed and we relaxed in the conservatory for a while after ten. The conservatory was really well presented and very tidy (before we had been there!). It was a nice size and had a small garden outside.

~ LOCATION~

Brooklands is only five mins wale from Caldicot castle and there are a few pubs and shops nearby. A few of us walked about ten mins down the road and discovered a small shopping centre with many shops including Waitrose, QS other clothes shops. I couldn’t help myself in going and spending some money. We visited the Philosopher’s pub which was literally across the road. It was good for the kids as it provided a bouncy castle, pool table and TV. We sat outside as the sun shone and everyone was occupied. It was a small, local but we were made welcome (it was properly the most takings they have had for a week). Cardiff is a 30 min drive and the village also has a train station. There were some lovely views of the village and it was nice to be staying in a small countryside town.
The locals were very welcoming from the pub and the local village. I felt quite relaxed even asking for things at the shops and in the castle. I have only been to Wales once so it was nice to see more of how the locals are.

~ OVERALL~

I think that Brooklands Motel was a lovely place to stay and there are no negative points about the place I can think of. I enjoyed my stay. I think it was a friendly, clean and relaxed accommodation which provides you with everything you need. The staff were polite and helpful. The views around the hotel are really beautiful and the garden was kept in a nice condition. I would recommend this motel to anyone who will be in the area at all. I would give it a rating of 8/10.
