I'm a Buckfast Bee!!!!

Advantages: Free, interesting
Disadvantages: Expensive shop, not very old

...couple of miles away from Buckfast Abbey. As someone who loves history and all things old, I thought great! I read up on the Abbey in a local guidebook and although it told me that the current Abbey was a 19th century creation I still thought it might be worth a look.

HISTORY:

Buckfast Abbey was originally founded in around 1018, as a Benedictine house. In the 1147 the Abbey joined the Cistercian order. The Cistercians ...
...with the country's other abbeys, Buckfast lost its status after the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. Buckfast was closed in 1539. The monks left and the treasures of the Abbey were taken to the Tower of London. The lead from the roof was melted down.

Some of the Abbey's land was sold off. By the early 19th century the Abbey still stood, albeit in ruins. It was finally demolished by Samuel Berry, who built a mansion ... more

Tonic Wine with Rosie

Advantages: Free parking, free to enter Abbey Church and grounds
Disadvantages: It's not really ideal for small children

...visited and worked at buckfast Abbey (no, I'm not a monk) . Whilst working in the gift shop visitors would often ask if I was a 'trainee' monk but they can be forgiven because many of the monks do work in the shops. If you are visiting buckfast Abbey for the first time it is helpful to have some knowledge of the Abbey's history and I would suggest visiting the 'audio visual' hut next to the gift shop which will explain the not so simple history of ...
...foundations. Location - Buckfast Abbey is situated about half way between Exeter and Plymouth (A38) and is sign posted, it's about 1 mile from the A38 turn off. Entrance to the Abbey, car park and grounds is free. The toilets are next to the car park and the there are also some around the back of the Grange resturant as well as being in the resturant itself. The Grange resturant is well equipped for children's menu's and much more substantial fare, ...

Buckfast Abbey is supurb!

Advantages: Its free to get in!!
Disadvantages: The shops are a bit expensive.

I visited Buckfast Abbey last year 2008, this was free entry and lots of grounds to wonder around in. it has gardens, water feature a cafe, a book shop and a gift shop with lots of lovely gifts inside. In my opinion the book shop and gift shop are expensive but its a lovely place to visit on a day out. There are places to sit and eat a picnic. Inside the abbey is lots of stunning large organ which has increased in size over the years, lots of pretty ...

Buckfast Abbey

Advantages: Free
Disadvantages: Children cannot run wild

We visited Buckfast Abbey a couple of years ago. Its free to get in and wander about, but the book / souvenir shop is quite expensive. The grounds are well maintained by the Monks and there is another shop which sells their wine, confectionary, and pottery which is quite reasonable. Parking is free and the Abbey is spectacular to look at with its architecture. We went late season, so it was fairly quiet and we did feel that we had to be very respectful ...

Thomas at the South Devon Railway

Advantages: Very pretty, well located to combine with other attractions
Disadvantages: Expensive, lack of display space, no platform tickets available

others, you can buy a through ticket from the main line, although you do have to cross between the Main Line and Littlehempstone stations, via a short walk and a footbridge. Local buses serve all three stations, and in addition, Buckfastleigh operates a vintage bus (Routemaster) service between the station and the town centre, via Buckfast Abbey. The timetable can be found on the South Devon Railway website, www.southdevonrailway.org. I would thoroughly recommend taking this picturesque journey, as you get a great view of the surrounding countryside and Buckfast Abbey itself. The round trip only takes around 15 minutes and was the highlight of our visit, as they were operating an open-top vehicle. Also making an appearance was ?Bertie? the railway bus, and ?Bulgy?, who as fans of Thomas the Tank Engine will know, is very naughty ...

a visit and all with qualities of their own. Whether you have your own transport or have to rely on the very good bus and rail transport in the region, there are a lot of attractions easily found. Buckfast Abbey for lovers of history, is a restored working abbey on the site of a Saxon establishment. For the family group there are all matter of farms and wildlife centers and if you just want to poke about in shops, then nearby Totnes is great for weird and wonderful antique shops and second hand clothes boutiques. The main attraction of the area is the landscape itself, the beauty of the rolling Devon landscape and the contrasts of the coastal areas make for feast of natural creations for those who just want to take in the essential qualities of the English South West. Of particular interest is Dartmouth a few miles down the coast from ...

Review of Brixham, Devon

Oh no not Pontins Brixham

Advantages: At least we had a good laugh about it!
Disadvantages: See the opinion - there's too many to list here!

each day on the coach, which got progressively less roadworthy as the days went by. Brixham was a lovely seaside village with a harbour and plenty of interesting shops. We saw a fair bit of the area around Brixham too, visiting Torquay, Paignton and Buckfast Abbey amongst other places. We never returned to the ‘entertainment’ venue at Pontins – the excitement was just too much, LOL! Instead we stayed in at night with the Scrabble or the playing cards and a couple of bottles of wine. By the fifth day we were more than ready to return home, but the coach broke down on the way and we had to get out and push! What a perfect end to a wonderful holiday! Never again! It remains a standing joke in our family to this day and we quite often tell mom that if she doesn’t behave we’ll make her go to Pontins again! ...
