After having read several mixed reviews of this hotel on the internet before I stayed there, I was a little unsure what to expect. Having stayed there for 1 night I think the reason for the varying reviews is that in some ways the hotel is excellent, but there are some aspects which let the hotel down and it is probably the extent to which different people are bothered by these more negative aspects which results in such mixed reviews (I have read many reviews giving the hotel 1/5 and many others giving it 5/5 and lots in between!).
The positives...
In my opinion, the front of the hotel and the communal interior areas are beautiful, particularly the reception area and restaurant. There is a grand sweeping staircase leading up to the bedrooms, a lovely old-fashioned wooden revolving door into the hotel, elaborate pillars, a lot ...
Advantages: Close to the Pavillion Gardens Disadvantages: Below par food, below par rooms.
Buxton is a picturesque town, clearly a place for holidays for the well-off in days gone by. The Portland Hotel is located near the Opera House, and opposite the Pavilion Gardens (but with a view of the car park, rather than the gardens), and may have been a decent hotel once, but not anymore.

The publicity states that you have Sky TV - in our room that seemed to be restricted to one sports channel and 2 radio channels ...
Advantages: Wonderful setting. spacious rooms. Good Food. Good service. Disadvantages: For the elderly the walk from the town to the hotel is uphill and tiring
The elegant Victorian grand spa hotel in Buxton,The Palace, is justifiably renowned for its spacious and comfortable guest rooms, its splendid cuisine and its high standards of service. Although the place has been carefully modernised over the years,it has lost none of its old world charm. It's setting on a hill overlooking the lovely town of Buxton is superb.
I really enjoyed a two night stay on a leisure break at The Palace. I was,on this occasion,a single traveller. My room was spacious, well furnished and equipped with satellite TV,tea and coffee making facilities, and all the other creature comforts. The ultra elegant restaurant is a sight for sore eyes and its grace was matched by the quality of the food. Throwing caution to the wind I had a huge British breakfast.Dinners were a delight too. There were delectable soups and starters ...
