I booked Buddy Lodge on recommendations from friends, who said it was nicer than what you usually stay in when backpacking in Thailand, but well needed after a long haul flight. We were told you feel jetlagged and exhausted and will need somewhere comfy and air-conditioned for a few days to get over jet lag and to get used to being in Thailand. They couldn't have been more right - It was lovely to have a comfortable, cool room to acclimatise in and it was definitely one of the nicer places we stayed in throughout our travels. However, this is why it was slightly more expensive than the usual backpacking haunts - it was £15 per person per night.
It's really cheap compared to UK prices, but this is quite pricey if you're on a budget backpacking trip. But well worth it for a few days at the beginning in my opinion.
Location The BuddyLodge Hotel is conveniently located around a 2 minute walk from the end of the famed Khaosan Road. (265 Khaosan Rd). This is really handy when you're dropped off at the end of the road with your heavy backpack and bags. I travelled alone from the UK and was quite apprehensive about finding the hotel. However, after being dropped off by the taxi I actually found Buddy Lodge really easily. It's a two-three minute walk up the Khaosan Road and you'll find it on the right hand side. Go up two small flights of steps and into the reception. If you've not been to Thailand before, the way the hotels and shops are nestled together and seem joined may seem a little weird at first but you'll quickly get used to it.
Inside The reception desk is on the left. When I went I found the staff very friendly and welcoming, and I didn't have to wait long to get my keys. They take a copy of your passport for security reasons, but that happens in nearly all hotels. The only thing that could have been a little better was that they didn't show me to my room. I had to carry my luggage up to my room alone. After 14 hours travelling from the UK, it would have been nice to be shown to my room.
The corridors are quite narrow and very humid, but I found this in all the hotels I stayed in Thailand. When I arrived in my room, the cool air conditioning was a big relief. The room itself was tastefully decorated in traditional Thai wood panelling. The bathroom was one of the nicest I experienced while travelling across Thailand. It had a large shower with hot water (which can be a luxury in Thailand), a western toilet and a large sink and mirror. It also had a hairdryer, clean towels and toiletries.
The beds were comfy and quite big for singles. There was a TV with a few English language channels, controlled air conditioning (a little noisy, but nothing that would bother you), a mini bar and a fridge with snacks. There were complimentary bottles of water which was a welcome relief! It's not advised to drink the water in Thailand. The beds were comfy, but it was quite hard to relax at night as there's a lot of noise from the bustling Khoasan Road. This is to be expected however, as you are right in the middle of backpackers paradise. The road is packed with noisy bars, street vendors, food stalls and clubs. So if you're looking for a quieter few nights, ask for a room facing away from the road. We didn't try any of the food there as we wanted to get out and about and explore.
Check out
When checking out, the staff allowed us to store our luggage with them until our bus left that night. We were slightly worried about leaving them behind the desk, however there were lots of other bags as well. Just make sure you lock your backpack and take all your important bits with you. (A great piece of advice would be to make a copy of your passport, just in case the worst happens).
To sum up, the Buddy Lodge was a great place to stay at the beginning of my trip to Thailand - friendly staff, comfy rooms, ideal location (if you're looking for a vibrant, social holiday and don't mind noise). Well worth a little more money for a few days of comfort before the real backpacking begins!
