For the past six months I have been working from home. As a result, my car, a Nissan Primera, is often left for days on end to collect dust on my drive. However, I have just found the solution. My car is now up for sale and I will be using hire cars from my local branch of Budget from now on. As a freelance journalist, I charge my customers (magazines, newspapers etc) for mileage at a rate of 45p per mile. With this and the cost of the hire taken into account (Ford Ka for around £25/day) is only need to do about 80 miles or so and the hire and the petrol are paid for. Better still, I have just discussed this with my accountant who tells me there are distinct tax and VAT advatages to hire cars over owned cars. OK, this won't be useful to everyone, but with teleworking growing all the time and traffic worsening by the day, it will make financial and evnironmental sense to an increasing numebr of people. Besides, I'll not be paying the £200+/month finance on a car that hardly turns a wheel.
