Advantages Good weather, good accomodation

Disadvantages The huts in the Mt. Cameroon could be better

The Town
Buea is a town that is located at the foot of Mt. Cameroon in Central Africa.Once you get into the country through the Douala international Airport, it takes about an hour of driving to get to Buea.It is located in the Anglophone part of the country so the language spoken there would be English. The town is the capital of the South west Province which is one of the ten provinces in the Republic of Cameroon.Moving around the town is quite easy for you could easily get taxi cabs and the roads are all tarred.

If you are looking for some fun head down to Molyko, which is where the Buea University campus is located. The area is quite lively when students are on campus. In the evenings there are lots of places where you can get grilled fish with either fried plantains or fried potatoes. There are a lot of drinking places also around the university area and you can't miss it for there would be students all over the place.

Lodging is easy get and it is relatively cheap.Check out The Lady L Hotel in Molyko,Buea and a nightly stay would run you only about £18.If you are looking for a more expensive lodging you can head down to Limbe(half an hour drive from Buea). It is a town located at the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and you could check out the FINI hotel or the hotels at Mile 11 in SEME beach.

Mt Cameroon
The main attraction of the Buea area is the Mt.Cameroon which is the highest peak in the whole of West and Central Africa(4070metres).If you plan on attempting the climb, go to the Tourism office and you would be provided a guide. The guide would lead you up the mountain and would do the cooking also. The climb is quite challenging, so plan on spending maybe two to three days for the trip.I only made it up to hot two during a one day period. There is a hut three and then the final climb to the top of the mountain.
There are five mains sections to the climb. The first would be getting up to Upper farms, then up to hut one, hut two, hut three and then the climb to the top of the mountain.Between hut one and hut two you would get into the savannah area and the view there is quite breathtaking.

There is a Mt Cameroon race of Hope which is ran yearly in the early part of February. It is a race sponsored by Guinness Cameroon and it draws quite a crowd. It is an internaional race, though it is mainly won by the locals who know the terrain better. After you attempt a climb up this mountain and back you would really be amazed at how the athletics manage to accomplish the same fit at under 5 hours.
