"I will return and I will be millions."
Review of Recoleta, Buenos Aires by VC81

Advantages: a fabulous district to visit
Disadvantages: all tourists agree

...barrios for visitors is exclusive Recoleta, a thoroughly well-heeled area which fronts onto the Rio Plata. Porteños, the residents of Buenos Aires, seem to have three great passions in life - tango, football and Evita, and it is in this district, in the vast Recoleta Cemetery, that the remains of Eva Peron found their final resting place. For many people Evita is the only reason to visit Recoleta, for some the only reason to visit Buenos Aries. The ...
...the smart streets of nearby Recoleta, are most simply navigated on foot. Alternatively, all organized city tours tend to terminate outside the cemetery, due to its status as the number one tourist site in the city, and also the high concentration of quality cafés and restaurants nearby. THE CEMETERY Since its establishment in 1822, an estimated 350,000 people have been interred at La Recoleta Cemetery. The name Recoleta derives from the meditation ... Read review

walking tour with CICERONES
Review of San Telmo, Buenos Aires by cy2128

Advantages: amazing old town feeling
Disadvantages: some areas not the best at night

Instead of doing the touristy San Telmo sunday fair, see this amazing neighborhood with someone who actually lives there!!! I had the great fortune of finding CICERONES, a non-profit organization that matches visitors with local residents who volunteer with Cicerones as tour guides. If you want a walking tour of San Telmo, or any neighborhood, just contact them on their website (www.cicerones.org.ar) and you will get matched up with a porteño (local ...
...incredibly friendly, outgoing, and super knowledgeable! Everyone knows the best way to get to know a city is to see it with someone who lives there. You not only get a more authentic view of Buenos Aires, learning about the city's hidden treasures, but you also get a completely personalized tour. It´s also FREE! Because it is a non-profit the guides are volunteers and the service is completely free. www.cicerones.org.ar ... Read review

If you only do one thing in BsAs, make it this
Review of Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires by hoxtonemu

Advantages: Must see site with great tour and super cafe, cheap performances
Disadvantages: You can't take photos inside, tours only run twice a day

In a five day visit to BsAs this was definitely the highlight. Location It is easy to get to, located just off the main street that runs through BsAs Tour I took the English language tour which costs the equivalent of about 2 pounds and lasts for an hour. The tour group was about 12 people and we went through the main auditorium, around the boxes and down to a maze of caverns and rehearsal rooms underground. The guides were excellent, answering ...
...tour. The only minus is that you can't take photos. Cafe On the ground level of the theatre there is a small cafe which serves cake, sandwiches and coffees. It is complete with a piano and when I was there one of the waitresses gave an inpromptu singing performance, amazing! Performances The performances occur most nights and you can buy tickets in teh box office on the ground floor. The tickets are a fraction of the price you would pay to see the ... Read review

The beautiful city of the dead.
Review of Cemetery of the Recoleta, Buenos Aires by mimi_solei

Advantages: Beautiful cemetery. Key place to visit in Buenos Aires
Disadvantages: Not great if you do not like Cemeteries. Public transport access is not great

...a trip to the famous Cemetery of Recoleta. Background about the district ('barrio') of Recoleta In the 1870's, a yellow-fever epidemic sent many of the cities elite from their comfortable lodgings of San Telmo to this neighborhood. As a result, Recoleta prospered and is now considered the 'mayfair' of Buenos Aires. The Cemetery is the home of a serveral famous Argentines, the most notable Eva Peron (or Evita). The historic cemetery is adorned ...
...of architectural styles. The entire cemetery is laid out in sections like city blocks, with wide tree-lined walkways branching into smaller "streets" filled with mausoleums. IMPRESSION: The day I visited the cemetery, it was a clear sunning winter afternoon. At the entrance, there are girls selling maps for the cemetery. TIP If you ever go, you can save money by getting the Time Out Buenos Aires book which provides with a map and the most famous ... Read review

The oldest cafe in the Paris of South America
Review of Cafe Tortoni, Buenos Aires by mimi_solei

Advantages: Good food, lots of history, lovely setting, easy access
Disadvantages: Very touristy. Food quality a bit inconsistent for the price

...Tacuari and Piedras. This beautiful cafe is easily accessible from the subte (underground) stations of both 'Plaza Mayo' and 'Av. de 9 Julio'. It's location make it perfect as a lunch stop following sight seeing in La Boca, San Telmo or around Plaza Mayo. If you are further afield, take the subte or any of the numerous buses thatl pass it- just ask locals,as listing all of them would take all day. HISTORY: Established in 1858, Cafe Tortoni is the ...
...visit and one of them is the fact that many famous bohemians used it as their regular haunt. This includes Carlos Gardel, Alfonsina Storni, Jorge Luis Borges and Benito Quinquela Martín. Yet there are many more reasons than just that MY IMPRESSION: Tortoni is beautiful. As you entre, old fashioned waiters rush around fulfilling orders. What strikes you is how much of it has remained in it's original stile. With high ceilings supported by mahogany ... Read review
