After graduation I spent the summer touring the US and working on a BUNAC scheme, here you can find out about orientation, costs, working abroad and BUNAC themselves. The scheme I went on was 'Work America':
Orientation talks:Even if you are only considering taking part in Work America, make sure that you go to an orientation when one takes place near your university. This is because you must have an orientation certificate to apply. The orientation will answer all your initial questions (and more) about the scheme. Costs : It costs a few pounds to join BUNAC. Then you will have to pay a fee for the scheme (£80 pounds when I took part). A BUNAC flight from London to Newark cost me about £420. (Return.) You must also pay insurance (About £90) If this sounds too expensive for you, alternatives such as the 'Kamp' programme may be suitable. Bear in mind that you will be able to recoup a lot of the costs when you work. Jobs:BUNAC will arrange the necessary visas and paperwork to enable you to work in the USA. I applied to the scheme before arranging a job, to be sure of a place (places are limited). However, BUNAC will supply you with a directory full of jobs, which I successfully used to get several offers and arrange a job before I left. On the other hand, plenty of people search for a job upon arrival. Travel:Taking a BUNAC flight affords you plenty of flexibility if you need to change your flight for any reason. It also means that you have the chance to meet up with other people doing the same thing. However, it is not the cheapest option and it is possible to arrange your own flight.
My opinion - I think that BUNAC operated very smoothly and professionally. Everything was very clearly explained from day one and I was never in any doubt about what was going on. Price wise, the flight programme may be a bit expensive, but offers a great deal of flexibility. Whether the difficulty of obtaining a work permit merits the course fee, I have no idea. There is plenty of support available, should you need it, eg the US office and the news network that is free to access from American telephones. You will also be pretty clued up by the time you leave, having been provided with a very useful guidebook written by previous participants and a guide to essential items to take. I had a great time and thoroughly recommend it.
Other schemes:Some people leave the US from LA for the Work Australia scheme. BUNAC also operates other schemes to places inluding S Africa, Jamaica, Spain and more. Contact them for details.
