Perhaps I am a little biased with my opinion of Butlins 'cos I was once a redcoat (not for long, couldn't sleep with enough people to gain any credibility in the job).
I love Butlins! I used to go there for many a weekend break, just 'cos it was so cheap and a real escape from life! In the olden days, they used to do "adult only" comedy weekenders which my boyfriend and I used to love; no kids getting under your feet, and the comedy was absolutely brilliant. They have many top-name comedians putting on performances. What a wonderful sight it was to see on those weekends, groups of lads and lasses piling in to their chalets; wheeling in huge crates of beer behind them - you can just imagine the kind of weekend they were planning!
Well, sadly for some, In the past couple of years Butlins have cleaned up their act somewhat. They no longer allow parties of "lads" in and it has become a real family orientated holiday. The whole holiday sites have had a makeover; the accommodation (which was a little shabby in the past) has been revamped and modernised and really offers great value for money. When I went last year, they had done away with the adult only weekends (which saddened me) - but I got a leaflet in the post yesterday advertising an adult only comedy break up at Skegness next weekend for only 24 pounds per person on a self catering basis!! How good is that??
If you're into live entertainment then Butlins is the place to go! They put on all sorts of themed breaks from Irish and Soul Weekends to Rock and Roll and Childrens breaks. Only problem is, for the big stars they have on down there, you really have to fight to get a decent seat and some of the seats are so far away from the stage it's hard to see anything at all so get to the shows early if you can. There are lots of things to do if you have got children, great swimming pool with waterslides and flumes.
These opinions are based on the Bognor Regis and Minehead sites, as I have not been to the Skegness one yet.
The accommodation is pretty good for the money you pay, though obviously not 4 star hotel standards. All in all, a pretty good value holiday especially for those on a budget. Not for those who prefer to spend their holiday relaxing in luxury!

Another outstanding opinion- I had always thought of Butlins as tacky and not that interesting. Not that I mind it being tacky, but having read your op. it sounds like its exciting enoough for me to gather a few mates together and whizz off for a drunken weekend (when its still aloud).
Keep up the good work with these ops; they are some of the sadly all to few that I have genuinely enjoyed reading at ciao. Although many reviews are very helpful they are often written in a very dry style. Three cheers to your reviews! :)

Advantages: loads of kiddie orientated entertainment and a chance to be a kid again yourself! Disadvantages: expensive over crowded venues in peak times.

Advantages: Great fun, lots to do, well themed, brilliant location, very atmospheric Disadvantages: Expensive on site, get fat from all the drinking and junk food.
