A disappointment for me these days, having been brought up with family holidays there in the 70's and 80's. There are a lot of activities that require extra payment (go karts, bowling etc.) which will find you dipping into the pocket so as to offset sulking. These have been moved in at the expense of the firground rides and other free activites. Even the cinema, which used to be free and show old but good films like Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther has been sold off to some soul-less conglomerate and is now just a normal cinema in a holiday camp.
Ah well, taking off the rose tinted glasses about how much better things were in the old days (and I'm only 30 as I write!) Butlins is a good place to go with kids, who will find plenty to occupy their week. Adults can catch up on their kip in a tiny chalet and let the kids run off to play. The seemingly millenium-dome inspired canopy that covers a large area is pretty useful given the English weather. Half-board food isn't bad, and the two meals a day is enough given the portions and the timing.

Advantages: Great fun, lots to do, well themed, brilliant location, very atmospheric Disadvantages: Expensive on site, get fat from all the drinking and junk food.
