We needed a break away and decided to choose an 80s weekend at Butlins.
Minehead Minehead is in North Somerset and is easy to find and get to. the actual town of Minhead is just up the road from Butlins and makes a pleasant walk where yoy van wander around the shops.
Arrival We arrived on the Friday but as we were not premium guests we had to wait until 1600 to check in which went smoothly enough. There is a large car park all down one side of the camp and vehicles can be left here safely all weekend. We found our room which was comfortable if not lacking in a few things - no shower no towels and no mirror for putting on your make up. I asked one of the staff about towels and they could be hired from the shop - we had bought beach towels with us for the pool so used those.
Food We had decided to go half board as the children are always hungry and on our first trip to the restaurant it was chaos to say the least. It wasn't really very well explained and a top tip is to sit as far away from the beaten track as poss to avoid getting bumped into and having to move etc. However people soon came to grips with what to do and by the last day it was a very slick operation. Breakfast was the best meal of the day and a good way to "set you up for the day". You could help yourself as many times as you liked so there was plenty of food.
Pool The pool complex was excellent and we spent many a happy hour there. There were several rides although there were long queues. The spa was lovely but again did get crowded so you did feel uncomfortable. The changing rooms were nice but the showers were not working on the second day which was a nuisance also several people claimed to have had things stolen from their lockers although I did not have a problem.
Fair The fair was poor many rides were broken most looked shoddy and the staff were miserable. The bumper cars were fun but you were not allowed to bump much to my childrens annoyance - what are bumper cars for?
Entertainment The highlight however was the entertainment - all the groups and artists were fantastic and this was the main reason we had come - the group representing Queen were in a word BRILLIANT. Belinda Carlisle was lve as was China Crisis who were both brilliant. The tribute bands were all excellent especially the Police and gary Numan.
To sum up the rooms were adequate even if the walls were a liitle thin and our heighbours were constantly falling out!! the food was OK the entertainment was great and fortunately the sun shone all weekend. PS the drinks were VERY expensive.
The trip itself cost £254 for 2 adults a 14 year old and a 7 year old. We spent about £150 on extras but due to the long weekend Friday lunchtime until Monday lunchtime we really felt we had had a lovely break. I would go again but would try and go with another family so the children would have company.

Advantages: Great fun, lots to do, well themed, brilliant location, very atmospheric Disadvantages: Expensive on site, get fat from all the drinking and junk food.
