Sometimes, thankfully not too often, life in our house gets a little bit too much to bear. These are the times when we grab for the Butlins brochure, work out how soon we can afford to get away, and then run for it as fast as we can, as soon as we can.
The purpose of writing this op is of course to share with you my personal opinion about my holiday and hopefully to give you all the information you might need to decide if this is the type of break that would appeal to you. I think the most effective way for me to do that is to separate it out into sections.I am afraid this is a long one. I have looked it over and I honestly think that I need all the enclosed information to help you make an informed decision as to whether these holidays are right for you.
So why do we choose Butlins?
We live in Nottingham. The nearest seaside town to us is Skegness or Skeggy as us common people affectionately call it. Skegness is about 80 miles from here. It is a traditional seaside town and the motto or slogan for Skegness is 'Come to Skegness.....Its bracing!'. Having had the pleasure of visiting Skegness on many occasions, including October and early spring, I can tell you that 'Bracing' is a nice way of saying...Bloody freezing!
We choose Butlins for a number of reasons.
1) They are easy to book with and from experience we have found that they can usually accommodate our needs at very short notice. They do short breaks which is what we tend to choose if we need a breather. In fact Butlins are getting more popular for their short breaks than they are for their weekly ones.
2) There are a lot of things thrown in for the price, entertainments, amusements, etc. As I have already said, we often book these holidays at very short notice and so there is often very little time to save up a big pot of extra spends. The more thrown in to keep the kids amused the better.
3) They have a half board option. When I am at the point where one of these breaks is desperately needed, I don't want to have to spend half the holiday tied to the cooker, trying desperately to satisfy the children. The food is in with the price, so apart from the odd snack or two, I don't have to delve into that precious spending pot to feed the hungry brood.
4)They have a holiday camp at Skegness. I know many of you may wonder why we choose somewhere so close to home to holiday. Well there are many reasons we choose to do this. Usually when we find one of these breaks necessary, we are at the end of our tether and we just want to go, as soon as we can and as effortlessly as we can. We don't want to have to drive hours and hours to get somewhere. We don't want to have to plan journeys. We don't want too spend the first day of our holiday wondering around like lost sheep, trying to get our bearings. We just want to get there and relax immediately. At the Skegness camp we can do this.
5) They are open on various dates, all year round, so we can get away when its convenient for us.
Butlins in Skegness is situated on the A52 between Skegness and Ingoldmells. Five minutes down the road you can find the famous Fantasy Island complex with its mega market and huge rides and rollercoasters. This is a great place and I would recommend you pay it a visit.
BOOKING
Booking for Butlins is really easy and with a choice of self catering and half board accommodation, with varying degrees of home comforts, there is plenty to choose from. We used to always have a brochure lying around the house, but lately I have tended to shoot straight onto the web site if I am considering a short break. There you can find lots of late deals and special offers that very often are not available in the book. This gives me the opportunity to see whats going on on the park, whats available, and who's going to be there when we go...They do have
some great entertainment and some fab themed holidays, but you might want to check the rating on the holiday. Some holidays are rated U which means a lot of the entertainment is themed towards the little ones. If you want a break to get away from the kids, this might not be for you. There are adult only breaks that cater just for adults, great for second honeymoons, but if you are looking for a family holiday, forget it! I tend to book at my local travel agent, especially if we want to go really quickly. This gives me the chance to ask any questions I might have and also to confirm my booking immediately. There are two types of short break available...Weekend 3 nights (Friday to Monday) and Midweek 4 nights (Monday to Friday)
CHECK IN
Booking in is from 4pm on the first day of your holiday. Personally I find that this is too late. We like to leave quite early in the morning when we travel, not because the roads are any clearer, but because we can't stand sitting waiting at home when the kids are over excited. Butlins have this covered though and will welcome you onto the park at any time on your arrival day. You can either leave the cases in the car, or they have a special office that you can check your luggage into while you wait for your accommodation. We found that we were allowed to use all the parks free facilities too, so it wasn't so bad. The actual check in is not so much fun. The queues are huge and very often full of over excited screaming children, not a great start if you are hoping for a quiet break. There are greeters there to try and keep everyone happy and I have to say that the staff are really pleasant and will accompany you out of the reception and point you in the right direction for your accommodation. I have found that half board is usually very close to all the facilities, but have heard that some of the self catering accommodation can be a long way from the heart of the park. Keys are accompanied by a welcome pack. In here you will find a map of the park, a list of whats on and lots and lots of advertisements for shops and attractions on the park. They also have a TV channel that tells you what is going on at different parts of the park at different times.
ACCOMMODATION
When we go to Butlins we tend to go half board and we usually select the standard accommodation. For that we get a double bedroom and another room for the kids with a set of bunk beds and a single. The bedding is on the beds when we arrive, which is a plus. I hate having to make the beds before we can use them. I wouldn't describe the accommodation as spacious, infact they are a little cramped and there is not a lot of room to move. They are not actually much bigger than one of the double bedrooms that you would get in a spacious caravan. They are clean though, and the bathrooms are large. There are big mirrors for make up times, and the showers have lots of hot water and non slip bottoms, which I like to see. There was plenty of wardrobe space and bedside cabinets too. You get a kettle and cups and a welcome pack that gives you enough tea and coffee to make one drink.
To be honest, the standard accommodation is just that, standard. They have painted bare walls and I like my colours and frills so they don't really appeal to me. The walls are very thin too and so if you happen to be put next to an old couple who unfortunately seemed to have a hearing problem, you will be able to hear everything they are yelling to one another.( Yes this happened to us ) Bear that in mind all you randy lovers out there too.
Why do we go standard if that is what it is? Well because for three nights I can do without my frills and put up with the painted walls. We honestly don't spend that much time in there actually.
FOOD
We were allocated a time for dining. The food itself was good and the menu was varied and gave us lots of choices. There were meals for vegetarians and salad selections for those health conscious visitors. I found that although the dining room was very large and beautifully decorated, it actually felt really cramped with so many people packed into it at one time. In the summer season there are other restaurants open to accommodate the large numbers of people who want to eat there, but off season the choice is more limited. The first time we went we were given a breakfast time of 10am. I was not happy with this. I am and always have been an early riser and would eat breakfast much earlier than that at home. I appreciate that some people like to lie in when they are away and the 10am breakfast for them was ideal, but for my family this was far too late. I would have had to buy snacks to keep the kids going until we could get into the restaurant. I have to say that after complaining, we were accommodated on the first sitting, but I do feel it would have saved everybody's time if we had been asked when booking what time we wanted to eat.
For your money you are offered a two course breakfast, with the second course consisting of a fried breakfast (Vegetarian or meaty) or kippers, or a continental breakfast.
Evening meals were three courses, a choice of starter, main course and pudding. The kids thought it was great. We had the same waiter all the time we were there and this meant that they get quite chatty with the kids, which adds to the experience in my eyes.
Have I eaten better? Oh yes, but I like to be pampered on holiday so I have to admit to liking half board. Self catering accommodation has cooking facilities, and there are lots of places to eat on the park. Harry Ramsdens and Burger King both have retail outlets on the park, but personally I find them expensive and somewhat over rated. The more I look at the prices of the food on offer, the more attractive the half board prices always seems to be.
THE STARLIGHT PAVILION
One of the real attractions of Butlins now is the fact that the weather does not have to be great for you to have a good time. The pavilion can be seen for miles around. It is made to look like a huge marquee, but of course being a permanent feature, it is actually much better made than I have made it sound. I can tell you that this place is huge and on entering it is like being in a huge shopping centre, but much more fun. This area houses most of the parks retail and entertainment outlets. It is here you will find not only the Harry Ramsdens and Burger Kings, but also the arcades and amusements, the cafés and the novelty shops and also the entertainment venues and many of the children's attractions. There is a huge stage, with a big screen behind it and it is here that you will watch some of the entertainment that is tailored to meet the needs of the family whatever the weather. My kids have met and had their photos taken with the likes of Spiderman, Digemon, the Power Rangers and many more of their TV favourites. There are puppet shows and panto's and singsongs galore to meet the needs of even the fussiest little one. For the older darlings there is pool, 10 pin bowling, Lazer Quest and video games but there is a charge for all of these.
There is a post office, a bookmakers , a hairdressers and a doctors surgery all on site too.
Personally, I found the shops were a little overpriced and too full of sweets and sugary fancies. I did find that the staff were very good with the children and didn't treat them as annoyances which is something I find far too many shops and establishments are guilty of. There is a supermarket there too, but I found this to be really expensive and it was quite badly understocked on one or two occasions when I paid it a visit. I would say that you would be better to shop off site for groceries if you are stopping as a self catering guest.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS
The fair........... The fair at Butlins is free to all who stay there. Don't get too excited though because it is not that big and there are height restrictions on all of the rides, and these height restrictions are definitely inforced. The fair is weather permitting, and shuts for an hour at lunchtime, but it keeps the kids happy and that makes me happy too. There is a Noddy land fair and play area too, for the tiny ones to play in.
Sunsplash........ Sunsplash is Butlin's indoor swimming area. I was going to say pool but it is so much more than that and it is all free so as you can imagine my kids spent a lot of time there. There are waves and bubbles and all sorts of splashes and sprays that makes this a wild water experience. There is a mega bowl, which for those of you that don''t know, is like a huge plughole that spins you around and around before plunging you into the water below. There are two flumes and also one of those canoe runs that catapults you around the area in a boat, shooting you around and around and then shooting you out at the end. The best bit for me is the volcano that sits in the middle of the area. Climb up the steps and get inside. You will find yourself in a deep jacuzzi, a hot bath, that definitely helps take away the stresses and strains of the morning after. The splash is open from 10am to 5pm and then after there are special sessions for ladies only and adults only.
The Cinema........There is an Odeon cinema on site.We went a couple of times and it was a really fun experience. You can book in advance, so you can fit it in nicely to the rest of your holiday and during the week they have free screenings for the kids to go and see.
On top of all this there is also the sports area, the Go Karts and of course the beach. Butlins has its own beach gate straight out onto the beach. My only problem with this is that they open it too late (After 9am in the morning) and they close it too early (Sometimes we found the gate locked at around 5pm). I like to walk before breakfast and after tea and I was disappointed that I could not walk on the beach at times that were convenient for me.
THE ENTERTAINMENT
Entertainment is provided for the children during the day by Butlins's famous Red Coats. There are opportunities for painting and drawing, football and the more traditional seaside games and sandcastle competitions. It is at night however that the camp comes to life and the Red Coats show why their jobs are so coveted. There are various pubs and clubs on the site, some that allow kids in, some that don't. They open at 7am and they close around 1am. People start queuing to get in at around 5pm and by the time the entertainment starts the place is already packed. I love the entertainment at Butlins and you definitely get a lot for your money. I hate the venues themselves. The aisles are way too small and they do not allow room for buggy's or wheelchairs. The fact that they get so crowded means that people tend to get a bit fed up of someone squeezing past them every few minute and so very often you end up with lots of grumpy people and lots of spilt beer.
Talking of beer, I found the bars were quite expensive, but then they usually are on holiday. There were special little shops for the kids to buy pop and crisps at too.
The swinging Shillelagh.....Adults only pub...Little entertainment, but no kids allowed so its a place to hide when you need a break.
Reds........Family club, where you get lots of entertainment fit for all the family. Many of the shows are performed by the multi talented Red Coats. I remember a tribute to Steps that they did once. It was excellent and the whole room was on its feet. This is an upstairs venue and not suitable for wheel chairs.
Centre Stage.........This is where the bigger acts play. We have seen the likes of Little and Large and Bucks Fizz.....Not such big acts are they? The thing is what you get each night is a show. A full programme of events to keep you entertained all through the evening. We have seen some great tribute acts while on holiday with Butlins. I think the most memorable one was a guy called Mickey J who was a Micheal Jackson impersonator. If you ever get chance to see this guy he's great.
Jaks.......This is Butlins's very own nightclub, no kids and tailored towards the young adults who like it loud and fast.
Put this with the entertainment on offer all day in the Skyline Pavilion, and I hope you can see that there is a lot of choice at Butlins and infact there is so much to do that evenings at Butlins are as lively an affair as you want them to be. At all venues there are Red Coats who's jobs are to make sure that you and your family have a great time. In my opinion they do a good job.
EXTRA INFORMATION I THINK YOU SHOULD KNOW.
The security on the site is excellent. This is really important for me. It means that I can give my youngsters a lot more freedom and know that they are safe within the compounds of the park. They can do their own thing and I know they will be safe. This allows me to relax a bit and go off for a game of bingo now and then.
There is a lot of secure parking close to each and every accommodation block so you can leave your car and not worry about it for a while.
There is a babysitting facility. I have heard it is very expensive.
Facilities for disabled guests are really good and well signposted too.
Checking out time is 10am on the last day of your holiday, but again you have the option of storing those suitcases and spending a few more hours in the park.
OK....HOW MUCH DOES IT COST.
Booking out of season is of course a lot cheaper and you can get some really good deals. We took the whole family...All 5 of us for 3 nights for £240 Half Board. I would recommend that you visit the web site and play around with whats available and see what sort of deal you can get. On your third booking you become a premier member and you get extra discounts and you can book in a couple of hours earlier when there is less of a queue.
Is it worth the money?
Despite the fact that I have told you a lot of the things that I could see improved on this camp, I have to say that as a holiday package you get an awful lot for your money. The camp is clean and well maintained and the entertainment is out of this world. There is something to suit all ages and tastes, even those picky teenagers.
I would advise that you don't go for a week though. We have found through experience that the entertainment is geared towards the short break and when staying for the week you tend to get a repeat of a lot of the shows. I have found that for my kids, a week is too long and they are tired out and ready to go after 4 nights.
You can camp and caravan on the site too, so if thats your thing you might well get the best of both worlds as again all the entertainment is thrown in for the price.
If after reading this you decide to give Butlins a go, I hope you have a really good time. You never know, you might just see me there.
wow, what a wicked review. Hope I can reach your standard one of these days.

Advantages: Great fun, not too expensive, not too far to stagger back to your room after a boozy night out! Disadvantages: Aimed at kids therefore a regression of age takes place; it could be months before I reintegrate into society!!!
