...... well maybe not quite Hi de Hi - the coats are red and not yellow - but walking around the paths outside the old accommodation which we stayed, I was certainly expecting Sue Pollard to come running round the corner at any minute.

24 and never been to Butlins! I'd of course heard tales of what went on there, but it always seemed just a tad tacky to me.

My boyfriend and I love to party together, and after struggling from one difficult spell to another in our relationship, we decided to go away for the weekend, and see if we could work out what it was we actually liked about each other. Butlins, I can appreciate, does not seem like the obvious place to go for such occasions, but fancying being entertained whilst drinking too much, we thought we'd give it a try.

The website.

About a week before our chosen weekend, I logged onto www. butlins.co.uk to check the prices and what was going on there. Their website is easy to follow, and you can check availability, prices, events, accommodation and facilities at all three of their resorts very simply. It can provide you with a quote, and then you can go onto book on-line.

I was a bit disappointed with the selection of pictures available for my chosen resort of Bognor Regis. The photo's of the accommodation where very small, and only showed a man sitting on a bed. The photos of the pool and other facilities were much the same.

There was an option to click on room facilities, where you could see what the different types of accommodation offered, maps and entertainment guides for specific dates.

All in all the website was everything you needed and easy to use, and if you book on-line, you also get a £5 discount!

Customer Services

I left it too late to book on line, I tried to book our weekend on the same day, as I wanted to go, but the dates had gone off the site, so I called their customer services to see if they could help me.

The staff were very friendly, and although they couldn't help me, they were able to transfer me directly through to the resort, who could check for availability for me.

The Travel Store

The Travel Store is an on site travel agents where you can book future holidays at Butlins whilst you are there, and this is who I spoke to about my late booking.

Initially I went through to a voice mail which asked me to leave my number for someone to call me back as all the representatives where busy, but since I'd taken their number from customer services, I thought I'd just call back myself. I tried a couple more time, each time getting the voicemail, and although I was convinced nobody would call me back, I left my name and number just in case. To my surprise once of the representatives called me back about 2 minutes later.

The gentleman I spoke to was helpful and courteous, and was able to quickly check on his computer and advise me of what accommodation was available and at what cost. Once I'd chosen what I wanted, I gave him my debit card details, he gave me a reference number and it was as simple as that!

I was further surprised that about 5 minutes after I had finished speaking to the Travel Store, the same man called me back just to tell me that as I had booked so late, I would have to collect my keys from guest services as opposed to the usual check in method. I was really impressed that he had taken the trouble to call me back and let me know, rather than leaving me to wonder around aimlessly!

The cost

When I had looked on the website, I had found standard accommodation at £75 per person, for the weekend (3 nights) based on 2 people sharing. There was other accommodation, which would work out, cheaper if you were travelling in a larger group, for example, standard self-catering accommodation based on 4 people sharing worked out at £48 per person for the same weekend.

As I booked last minute, I received a discount, and I paid £64 each. This to me was cheap enough, but I was then told that this price was on a half board basis, so we had our breakfast and evening meal included. What a bargain!

Being a young couple we had opted for an over 18's weekend, so there would be lots of drunken adults partying. I was hoping that would mean that the entertainment would be aimed towards an adult audience, rather than having to sit through mundane early evening entertainment intended to amuse little people. The event happening on the weekend we was there was 'Night Fever' - lots of swinging 70's music, were fancy dress was opening encouraged, and the entertainment bill packed solid with tribute bands.

Directions

I printed out a small map from the Butlins website, and we found it no problem. The journey from Essex took about 2 hours, and once you got close to Bognor Regis, Butlins was well sign posted.

Checking in

When we arrived at Butlins, we drove up to a security box at the entrance to the park. The security guy took our booking reference number and directed us towards a car park.

As we was a late booking, we parked up and walked over to the guest services, where we again gave our reference number and names, and we're given a welcome pack and directions to our apartment.

For people that book in advance, there was a man standing in the main entertainment complex, with a small stand and a box load of keys.

Parking

We found a space in the car park relatively easily, although it has to be said, the spaces are really skinny and I was a bit worried about the people who were parked next to us in case they couldn't open their doors enough to fit in! But everyone was parked the same, so we just went with it.

The lighting in the car park is not fantastic, and we couldn't see any security cameras. Having said that, the security around Butlins was very good as a whole, so if our car had of got broken into or vandalised, it could only have been someone else staying there.

Accommodation

We had a standard apartment with a double bed, which was situated in what could only be the original block of accommodation. Each row of accommodation is one floor high, and we were on the top floor.

We unlocked the small front door, and immediately walked into a bedroom with 2 single beds. There were 2 doors leading off of this room, one with a double bed, and the other leading to the bathroom.

We had tea and coffee making facilities, a small colour TV, an Iron, Iron board, a full-length mirror and duvets on our beds. The rooms were small, and so was the bathroom! But it was all very clean and was far nicer than was we expected for our money!

There is of course nicer accommodation, lodges with their own parking space in front of, which have widescreen TV’s and DVD’s players (DVD’s to which can be rented on site!) and apartments in newer looking buildings, but ours was fine for what we needed.

The walkway outside our room was a bit dangerous though. It made us laugh that they would never even consider building something like that these days! The beams on the ceiling were so low, even I had to duck to walk along it in places (and I’m only 5'6"!) and the pathway itself was uneven. The stairs up to the first floor were rusted and uneven too, and coming home drunk at night, we really did have to be careful not to break our necks.

Facilities

What more could you ask for in ways of facilities! They have everything we needed

- Cinema
- Quazar
- Fun Fair
- Hair Dressers
- Toy Shop
- Convenience store
- Swimming complex
- Restaurants
- Pubs
- Clubs
- Gala Bingo

We were really impressed!

Swimming complex

During the summer there is also a massive outdoors pool, but this was closed.

The indoor swimming complex 'Splash' is fantastic though. It has 4 water flumes, rapids, waterway boat thing (No idea what that’s called!) wave machines, and lots of slides and smaller things for children to climb around on.

The water flumes were great! Haven't been on one for years. Some of them really are quite scary though, one of them plunging you into a massive bowl that you side around and around until you literally fall out the bottom into a really deep pool. Certainly not one for the faint hearted - gave me whip last!

Jumpin Jaks

Yes, there is a Jumpin Jaks on site! The lay out in side is in line with all of their others, but maybe it was just the weekend we were there, but it seemed to attract the louder, more boisterous of the guests, and coupled with the hard hitting house music it was playing, the atmosphere was quite unpleasant, and after one drink we made a hasty retreat.

Reds

Red's is the 'Home of the Redcoats!' I would imagine that at the height of the season when all the families are there in force, that there would be red coats on stage for most of the evening, involving the audience and humouring the kids. But being an over 18's weekend, there was lots of 70's music, and lots of tribute bands, which were all fantastic!

There is lots of seating in Reds, enough tables facing the stage for most people to sit down and enjoy the show, or to rest after too much boogying. There are 2 bars, and although they get busy, I always got served quickly.

We spent most of our evenings in Reds because we found somewhere we enjoyed and thought we'd stick to it! There was also an Irish bar, which has Karaoke until about midnight, and various other pubs around the complex, so I would say there is definitely something to suit all tastes!

Food!

Well, as I said, we were staying half board, so we didn't really try many of the food outlets (apart from a sneaky late night drunken burger or 2 ;o). But there is a Burger King, Harry Ramsdens, a Kebab shops and a couple of American style grill houses, were you could have steak or chicken etc.. Most of the pubs also served food during the day, some of them evening advertised Curry Nights etc...

Staying so cheaply, we were expecting the food we got through being half board, to be minging to say the least. We were so wrong! I must of put about 2 stone whilst I was there, I just couldn't stop eating!

The breakfast and dinner are both eat as much as you like. For breakfast you can have fried food, cereals, fruit etc.. and as much of it as you like. I was really surprised at the selection of fresh fruit available, big baskets of apples, bananas and oranges, and grapefruit sliced and chilled. The mornings we was there, the fried food varied each day, with the eggs cooked differently, or mushrooms instead of hash browns etc.

For dinners, we have a choice from traditional English fare - like a roast dinner, a Chinese or Indian dish, fish, a vegetarian option, or a kid’s menu. There were also deserts, usually come kinds of cake or ice cream, and once again, large baskets of fruit and bread rolls to choose from. If you anything like my partner, you’ll be going up more than once

There is also tea, coffee, soft drinks and juices, which you can help yourself too.

So did we enjoy it? LOVED IT!!! Wooo hoooo !!! I've never been to a Butlins before, and was really expecting a load of old tac! Of course there was tac, but everyone was in such high spirits and the red coats had more energy than Geoffrey from Rainbow.

We spent our days playing on the arcade machines (especially the teddy bear machines, I NEEDED danger mouse!), playing Qazar, messing around in the pool and eating! At night the whole place just buzzes, there was loads of stag weakened and hen nights there, all dressed up of course, and lots of people dressed up as the bee gee's with massive wigs on, but everything was kept in the holiday sprit and I never once saw anyone fighting or arguing, as you might expect to see on a drink fuelled over 18's weekend like that.

I was really sad to leave, and am already planning my return, cant believe I never discovered the joys of Butlin's before!

Sorry if its all a bit long winded, thank you for reading. C xox
