We have just returned from a week at Butlins. Myself, my husband and our 2 boys aged 9 & 13. It was the boys choice of holiday and as we hadn't been before we gave it a go. My husband was a little reluctant to say the least, he admits to being a bit of a holiday snob.
I used the website butlins.co.uk which was informative and easy to navigate. Booking was straightforward, the week cost us £732, this was in peak school holiday period. Prices vary greatly depending on time of year and type of accomodation chosen.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Usual check in is 4pm, but we arrived just after 6pm, this was a good move as we drove straight in, no queues. We pulled into the car park. I had never seen so many seagulls in one place. Each car had gulls all over it, gull poo everywhere. They boys thought this hilarious. My husband was very unimpressed. You can't drive to the chalets unless you are disabled, so we decided to pick up the keys, locate the chalet, then return to the car for the cases.
ACCOMODATION
If you are self catering there are 3 types offered - Gold, Silver or Standard.
We chose Silver. I was put off of Standard when I read that people in Standard accomodation could hire toasters, microwaves, ironing boards from the hire shop @ £1.50 per day. Sorry but I consider self catering accomodation should a least have a toaster.
Shortly before our holiday I received a call from Butlins asking if I wanted to upgrade to Silver Plus, which were newly decorated chalets with better TV's, this cost £36 but was worth it to have a new clean chalet.
The chalets terraced, the rows are quite close together with a strip of lawn inbetween. The boys referred to it as 'our hut' as it reminded them of the prefab huts at school. There was not really any room to relax outside. Once inside the rooms were basic, but had been decorated recently. They are equipt for exactly the amount of occupants - 4 cups, 4 glasses, 4 plates, 4 forks etc etc. So you have to ensure you wash up after each use. There was a welcome pack, Chocolates? Fruit? no, it contained a
tea towel, small yellow sponge and washing up liqued in a tiny Tipex sized bottle. The beds felt a bit hard, but we slept like logs all week. The bathroom was basic with a shower over the bath. It worked fine and we had unlimited hot water. my only gripe with the bathroom was the loo seat was broken, you know the sort it shifts 2 inches to the side when you sit on it.
LOCATION
Butlins is situated right opposite a beautiful sandy beach. Minehead is a ten minute stroll away. It has a pretty high street and harbour. Lots of restaurants, tea rooms. A lovely peaceful garden called Blenheim Gardens with a bandstand and putting green. An old fashioned station with working steam trains.
Right next to Butlins is a large Tesco and a McDonalds. Tesco is cheaper then the supermarkets on resort.
Minehead is a great base to explore the North Devon coast, Exmoor and Somerset. Which is very picturesque and peacefull. But anyway lets go back to Butlins....
THE SKYLINE PAVILION
This is the first place you are drawn to, it's the heart of the resort. A massive tent like structure, like a cross between the Millennium Dome and a circus big top. A very very very busy place. It contains a large stage area with entertainment throughout the day { more details on this later} fast food outlets, bars, karaoke, nightclub, cafes, shops, bowling alley ( more individual details later} arcades, fruit machines, vending machines, soft play areas, punch and Judy theatre, trampolines with bungee ropes, charactures wandering around, Hulk, Spiderman & Billy Bear - the Butlins mascot. Plus thousands of people.
This is one of the noisiest places I have ever been too. Each of the bars and restuarants with their own music, noise from the arcades, children shreiking on the soft play and trampolines all competing with the booming sound system of the entertainment stage.
ENTERTAINMENT
This is Butlins fortè. It made our holiday worth the money. West end quality shows, bands, dancers, comedians, Kids entertainment, Tribute bands.
The tribute bands were especially good, in just one week we saw Madness, Robbie Williams, Tom Jones, Monkees, Elton John, Elvis, Abba & Police.
There are 3 main entertainment venues plus other smaller ones.
Centre Stage - This is a massive place, we were stunned when we first walked in. It seats 2000 people on chairs around tables. Large dancefloor at the front, the floor is gradually tiered so that you can see the stage from all positions. it has brilliant lighting and sound system.
There are 3 shows per night in here, first a kids show which was usually followed by a music and dance show, then later in the evening a band. Between the shows are party dances. This was okay the first couple of nights, but I soon got sick of listening to YMCA, Macarena, Ketchup song etc etc. Unfortunately you have to suffer the party dances if you want to ensure getting a seat for the shows.
There are long bar areas on each side of the venue, each bar had a kids area where they could buy their own drinks - great idea. Loads of toilets on each side. Also 2 shops, one selling hot dogs, popcorn etc and the other selling novelties - silly hats, light sabers, badges with flashing lights etc.
Reds - This is slightly smaller but still huge. Again kids show early evening, followed by the party dances again! Then usually Recoats performing, Comedians and bands. This venue has a more intimate club like atmosphere.
Skyline Stage - located in the Skyline Paviliion is used for daytime and early evening shows. Moscow State Circus, African Dancers, WWF style wrestling.
There is no specific seating here, people sit in the floor or walls, watch from the Skyline Cafe or pinch the chairs from Burger King. People seemed to come and go, watch while passing or having a coffee.
The other entertainment venues are - Jaks- over 18's nightclub, Swinging Shillelagh - Irish Bar with Karaoke.
FOOD & DRINK
Fast Food Restaurants - Burger King, Pizza Hut, Harry RamsdensFish and Chips. (The fish and chips were cheaper and nicer in Minehead High Street) McDonalds is a 5 min walk outside resort.
Highwayman Pub - set in a quieter part of the resort on a lake. Full menu, kids menu, Sunday roast. ( Sunday roasts are plentiful and cheaper in Minehead.)
Old Yacht Club - Large buffet style restaurant, breakfast, evening meals & lunches.
KIDS STUFF
Butlins do this very well. there are kids clubs for ages 0-4, 5-8, 9-12 & 13-17. The younger two groups need to be accompanied by an adult, fortunately our two fell into the older groups and could go alone.
The Redcoats organise activities all day and for the older ones late into the evening. Our 13 year old went out mid morning and we didn't see him again until 10 pm most days.
They do a full range of activities, sporting, creative, mad. My son enjoyed the playstation comp, Karaoke and Trigger Happy TV ( this involved teenagers and Redcoats playing tricks on unsuspecting passers by)
I was sitting in the chalet having a peaceful coffee, when I heard a huge crowd of kids screaming and singing Xmas carols. It was the 5 - 8 years olds together with smiling redcoats, they were knocking on windows collecting sweets and crisps. I popped some Penguins in their already overflowing buckets. Wondering who was going to eat it all!
OTHER ATTRACTIONS
Funfair - Traditional seaside sort of rides e.g waltzers, dodgems. Could do with a few more up to date rides and a lick of paint. The good thing is all rides are free of charge.
Swimming Pool - We were a bit disappointed with the pool considering the size of the resort. It's a large leisure pool with wave machine, as found in most big towns. The chlorine was very very strong. There are 4 slides Back Hole - Flume in Darkness. Blue Comet - Open Flume which goes outside. Master Blaster - Fast water jet propelled ride in a dingy. Space Bowl - Flume that deposits you into a large open bowl, until you finally plop though the bottom into 6 ft of water.
I tried the Master Blaster raft ride, it was fast and fun.
I also tried the Space Bowl, I bumped my head at the end of the flume where it entered the bowl and stubbed my toe on the bottom when plunged into the pool, (didn't enjoy that much} three out of the four of us bumped our heads in the same place.
I think a resort the size of Butlins could have a better pool, similar to the one's at Oasis or Centre Parcs.
The pool is only open between 10am and 5pm and gets very crowded.
Hotshots - Ten Pin Bowling and Americal Pool. There is an additional charge for this £3.50 per game. Kids can bowl free before midday.
Crazy Golf - nothing special, costs £1.50 per person ( this is the same price as the 18 hole putting green in Minehead, which is lovely)
ABC Cinema - shows two up to date films, charge £4.50 adult £3.50 child.
Go Carts - £4.00 per race. very expensive as the track is nothing special and races are short.
Bungee Trampolines - Good fun but expensive. £4.00 for 3 minutes.
Green Baize - Snooker and Darts, free use of snooker tables and dart boards. A very dimly lit large room in a run down building.
There are lots of other smaller attractions, Bingo, bouncy castles, face painting, puppet shows, Boating lake, Noddy Land rides for little kids. Kids playgrounds dotted about.
SHOPS
Everydays Supermarket - Well stocked but quite expensive. We used it for odd bits and did our main shopping at the local Tesco.
A bit lacking here. A small concrete and metal combined sports area with goals and baseball nets. A small area for bowls. We felt that Butlins could do with a few tenniscourts and an indoor sports area for squash, badminton etc with gym facilities.
There was an indoor archery centre, but we didn't go in there.
There is a public golf couse just across the road and clubs can be hired at Butlins.
OVERALL
There are half board options if you don't wish to self cater.
Butlins caters very well for disabled people. With wheelchair access to all area. There were a large group of mentally handicapped people there. The Redcoats paid them special attention, to ensure they stay was fun and happy.
I would have given Butlins 2 or 3 stars, but the fantastic entertainment and they way our boys enjoyed every minute pushed it up to 4 stars.
We were there at the busiest time of year, the staff work very hard to keep everybody entertained and keep everything as tidy and safe as possible.
I would go again but maybe for a three or four day break at a less busy time of year. My husband is not convinced, but does admit to enjoying the shows.
Butlins is not particularly my thing but, as we have relatives in Minehead, we decided to buy a caravan there so we would have somewhere to stay when visiting. It was also a lot cheaper than buying a property in the area. We have a holiday lodge in Cornwall but we stopped going there because the children were always bored as there was never enough for them to do. I now just rent it out for holidays.
The caravan arrived 2 weeks ago. The weekend after it arrived we spent most of the time unloading 23 Argos boxes! As the caravan is sited right by the lake, we made friends with all the ducks, geese, and swans. We have seen rabbits, and even a badger. It's very peaceful, and I would highly recommend anyone to hire a caravan rather than a chalet. It will be cheaper in price and away from the noise of the main resort, yet it's only a few minutes walk away. Plus, many of the caravans are cleaner and smarter than the chalets (particularly ours!!)
We went again last weekend and this time we were able to spend a bit of time going round the resort.
The children really enjoyed the ballpit play area, the funfair and a wrestling show, which was quite entertaining. On the Sunday morning (whilst I was cleaning the caravan getting it ready for our first rental guests!) the children went with my husband to meet Noddy and to have a play on all the Noddy rides. Needless to say, they didn't want to come home. We consoled them by having a McDonalds on the way out.
If it's not your thing, do it for the children. If your children are happy, then you will be happy.

Don't think I could take all the noise and it being so busy but like the idea of all the shows. Nancy

I went to this resort when I was 15, and had a holiday romance there (my first boyfriend) so it brings back many memories. I'm 33 now, so it's a long time ago! Lynne x

Advantages: Great fun, not too expensive, not too far to stagger back to your room after a boozy night out! Disadvantages: Aimed at kids therefore a regression of age takes place; it could be months before I reintegrate into society!!!
