We booked our holiday to Butlins through the sun newspaper using one of those holidays from just £9.50 per person with the additional charge of £60 which covers entertainment passes and bed linen etc, it cost us a total of £98 for 5 days (mon - fri) - this was two adults and two children and a baby sneaked in for free. We were allocated a standard two beroomed apartment which you can upgrade before the start of your holiday if you wish but we didn't and our booking in time was 4pm on the day of arrival.
The Site
Minehead was well signposted from the motorway and butlins was signposted from within about 5 miles although to be honest you spot it miles away. There were two car parks although most people seem to get sent to the north car park which is just a little further along the sea front, these are monitored by security guards in a little white hut who do check for wristbands when you have been off site. The next thing you see once you've parked is the pavilion, this is the main hub for Butlins entertainment, shops and restaurants, everyhting is under a big white metal tent. It's very well laid out and easy to find your way around. Once outside the pavilion you will find anumber of other facilities such as a funfair, swimming pool, driving school, rock climbing, bike hire and mini golf to list a few. The site seems well maintained and clean, free from litter and huge!
The Accommodation
Our
apartment comprised of a living area which had two settees and a tv that was seperated from the kitchen by a breakfast bar, the kitchen contained a cooker, microwave, toaster, drink making facilities and utensils. There was a bathroom which consisted of a toilet, sink and shower althought the shower was very dark if you shut the curtain and the bath mat was missing. Our bedroom contained a double bed, 2 side tables, wardrobe and a dressing table. Once we had squeezed the travel cot at the bottom of the bed there was no room to move! The second bedroom comprised of two single beds seperated by a side table and a wardrobe. The apartment although outdated was very clean and well kept, ours was on the top floor - each unit consists of three floors with two apartments on each level (ground, first and second). The two upper floors are entered via a metal stairway which comprises of four sets of steps and as you can imagine these were a nightmare with luggage and the daily two or three trips in and out of the apartment.
Eating Facilities
Sun & Moon - this is a family orientated pub which has a good menu and offers breakfast from 9.30am plus the prices were not too bad. Burger KIng - eat in or takeaway, we all know what this is and obviousally attract the kids. Pizza Hut - eat in or takeaway, again attract the kids. Fish & Chip shop - eat in or takeway, this was good value for money with big prtions and kids meals. Cafe - this was in the centre of the pavilion and served snacks and drinks although it was quite expensive and was often busy. Restaurants - there a three restaurants on site, a help yourself which had a wide variety of choice but i couldn't say what the prices were like as i never ate in here, a very expensive restaurant which again i never used and a restaurant which was reserved for the half boarders.
Evening entertainment
Reds - this is a non smoking family entertainment room situated just outside the pavilion. Centre stage - this is a large family entertainment room with both smoking and non-smoking seats, there are two entrances one just inside the pavilion and one outside next to reds. Jaks - this is an onsite nightclub for over 18's, it's situated inside the pavilion and opens from 10pm - 2 am. The Swinging Shillelaigh - this is an irish pub which is very basic with wooden floors and offers a nightly karaoke. Bar Rosso - this is basically a cocktail bar Hit Shots - sports themed bar where you can go ten-pin bowling, play american pool and watch big screen sports. Crazy Horse Saloon - this is only open during busier breaks and has live entertainment until late.
Shops and services
Mega treats Treasures gift store - gift shop Newsagents - every day news Jokers joke shop - redeem prize tickets for joke toys Photocall - photo shop A Go GO - Clothes JAG Communication - mobile phone shop Toy Box - toys for kids Finishing touches - hair salon Ladbrokes - Betting Shop Everydays - on site supermaret Laundrette Holiday Booking Shop Cash Point Nursery - provides day care for 0 - 2 years olds by qualified staff - hourly rates apply.
Daily Entertainment
Splashworld - this is a great facility comprising of three pools, a toddler pool, a swimming pool and a pool that has a wave machine with whirlpool. It also has three slides and you can easily spend a couple of hours in here entertaining the kids. It's free to use, all you need is 30p for the locker and a pushchair lock is provided for a £5 refundable deposit. There is also an outside paddling pool which opens depending on the weather. Driving school - this is a mini driving entre with peddle cars, for about £1.50 each the kids get to drive round mini roads with traffic lights and receive a driving licence at the end. Mini Golf - i'm not sure what the cost of this is as we never used it. Rock climbing - again this was only open depending on the weather and is aimed at teenagers and adults so we never used. Bungee Trampoline - situated inside the pavilion this was a normal trampoline but you were attached to bungee ropes so you could bounce higher and perform gamboles while in the air, this was loved by our kids but at a cost of £6 each for 10 minutes it became rather expensive!! Funfair - situated just outside the main pavilion most rides out here were free and included a pirate ship, waltzers, formula 1 go-karts(these cost £4 each), bumper cars and a carousel. It was open every day from 10am. Bob's play yard - aimed at the toddlers this was situated just outside the pavilion and smaller rides such as a ride on train, mini tea cups, mini cars and mini aeroplanes plus photo shoots with bob the builder and wendy. Kid's Clubs - there are four clubs on offer, under 5's, 5-8's, 9 - 12's and 13 - 16's. All these clubs offer free fun and games for the age group listed but you need to ask for more details on arrival.
All in all you don't really have to leave the site but it would be a shame not to as Butlins is situated near a gorgeous long beach that kids would love, there's also the sea front to walk along which has amusement arcades and leads into the town centre with a wide variety of shops. There is a market that is held on tuesdays & thursday and is situated just behind Macdonalds and is clearly signposted.
I have to say that we had a great time although it was costly especially with kids aged 7 or wanted to go on everything every day! The evenin entertainment was well thought out and varied and we had the extra surprise if the tent being hit by lightning on our second night which caused the stage to flood in centre stage by causing a hole in the roof but the famous redcoats entertained the crowds with part songs whilt the problems were being dealt with. I take my hat off to these reps who never sem to run out of energy and are the friendliest reps i've ever holidayed with, they never seem to get annoyed with all the kids who think they are toys to play with and they work really hard for the shows they entertain you with. I would defiantely return for another holiday, just to see the endless smiles that appear on the kids faces especially when Billy Bear makes an appearance.
All in all it's great fun for all the family whatever age.
Great for a fun family holiday when the children are small. …Very good review!

Been a few times, but went self-catering in their timber lodges because the restaurant (that used to be waiter service and the food was quite acceptable) is now self-service, school canteen type - yuk! The entertainment is good for the kids, we haven't really been to the evening entertainment very much, but the daytime rides and swimming etc. is great. Our kids are young and were in bed by 7.30! Just been to Bognor Regis weekend before last (only paid £280 for deluxe self-catering, got £160 off with Tesco clubcard vouchers!), but would go back to Minehead because the beach is lovely and the harbour is a wonderful place to visit, as well as the lifeboat station. Ok for the weekend, not sure about a week! Good review, thanks. Sal x

Advantages: Great fun, lots to do, well themed, brilliant location, very atmospheric Disadvantages: Expensive on site, get fat from all the drinking and junk food.
