I was debating whether or not to write a review about Byron's because the last thing in the world I'd want to do is publicise it. As it stands, it is a pretty smallish restaurant tucked neatly away on Devonshire Hill in Hampstead, not in the harsh lights of the West End.
Its character is entirely Hampstead. It embodies class, warmth and sophistication without being the slightest bit affected. The staff are welcoming and helpful, the ambiance is classical French with lots of dark woods and candlelight.
And then there is the food- certainly the highpoint of the whole affair. I rarely get too excited about London eateries as they tend to care more about what the dish looks like than what it tastes like and the portions always tend towards the miniscule. (How many times have a spent over £80 at dinner with a grumbling stomach only to end the evening at a Burger King for a proper sized portion). Byron's provides ample portions- generous in comparison to what you might be accustomed to in other restaurants. The flavour is perfect- very French food with innovative flair like peach champagne soup (forgive me for not remembering any other of the dishes on the menu).
They have a nice generous wine list (with an emphasis on mostly French and Old World wines) which start at around £16/bottle. A 3 course dinner costs about £24. Lunches are more cost-effective with a 2 course meal for about a tenner without wine.
A night at Byron's will typically leave me feeling pretty mellow and at one with the world.
