In a very pleasant old style part of Cologne lies the Hotel Caprice. Although the entrance is in an odd place to get to from the main road from the Railway station (by the Catheadral) it does not take a great deal of genious to find it when following the intructions given when we booked. Our purpose in Cologne was simply to relax with the scenery and enjoy a sample of German-style life. The hotel on first site was moderately pleasing from the outside, and we were received by a most gentlemanly character who chose, after greeting us in German that English would probably sort formalities out more quickly. (We only encountered one member of the reception staff unable to speak fluent English - appropriately he worked through the night !). The lobby was extremaly alluring - don't forget that free coffee is available to guests throughout the morning after breakfast (we didn't know at first). The room was of a pleasant size although our double bed consisted of two single beds pushed together. It had a table with a chair, tv (only one in english speaking channel 18),night lights, minibar with refrigerator, telephone service and heated floor!. The bathroom was pleasant albeit the shower was small. Overall the entire hotel was clean and with modern features. The breakfast (buffet) was something to experience (be careful not to spend the whole day there as we nearly did!). A variety of choices from steak tartare to traditional german saussage, cheese, bacon, scramble eggs, cold meats, cereal, potato salad and yoghurts (don't be afraid to keep reloading your plate). The hotel is within walking distance to the main shopping areas, the cathedral and is less than a minute walk from the Rhine. There is an abundance of eating and drinking stablishments, the majority of which tend to cater for those who like food. We recommend Haxenhaus zum Rheingarten which is round the corner from the hotel. Cologne is a beautiful city that is worth visiting. However when we went in February it was undergoing a lot of reconstruction work. We are planning to come back and we will probable stay at City Class Caprice Hotel again.
