Do you remember the 9 11 disaster? I do. I was on holiday in Madeira staying at the Savoy hotel, a hotel built for the cruise ships patrons and with an old world charm, where we discovered that they were building a 5 star resort hotel overlooking the sea and connected by a bridge to the Classic hotel. That was back in 2001 and it was completed a couple of years later. I always wanted to stay there to see what it was like and I am pleased to say my wish was granted earlier this month.
The Royal Savoy resort hotel is built overlooking the sea and I think that nearly every room and suite must have a sea view. We were on the fifth floor and had a magnificent view both of the sea and across to the harbour for the cruise ships. We booked a last minute holiday in Madeira in september 2007 and on the advice of our agent decided to go for the Pestana Grand hotel. The hotel was rated as a 5 star by our agent although this site rightly has it as a four-star. We booked on a bed & breakfast basis and with flights and transfers It cost us about £650 each for the week .
On arrival the reception staff were very helpful and spoke excellent English. We had been booked into a mountain view room and asked if we could upgrade to a sea view. This was no problem for, I think, an extra £20 per night. This was well worth it as we noticed that the mountain view rooms all overlooked the car park. The view was excellent from our room and we could see people fishing from small boats, the hotel gardens and pools and people walking along the promenade which takes you from the hotel ...

The Savoy Resort is pretty much amazing and we found it offers the most outstanding customer service ever! The Atlantic views are incredible and it is only located about 10 mins pleasant walk along the harbour from the centre of Funchal, Madeira's capital.
There is a wide variety of leisure facilities both on and off site, including indoor heated pools, sauna's,beauty salons, sea filled pools (very novel!) and loads of lovely staff to make sure you make the most of it while you are on site.
The gardens surrounding the complex are beautifully landscaped, really enhancing the sea views offered around most of the site. They provide welcome shade in the middle of the day and provide a a fair amount of privacy if you so feel like it.
