Cádiz. The place where I was born, and the place where I’ve always live (and still do). The are two Cádiz, the province and the town. The province is a small one, if you compare it to others provinces from Spain, like Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or here, in the south of Spain, Seville. Cádiz, the town, is the capital of the province, and its also a very small one, with 150,000 inhabitants population. That makes Cádiz a ´familiar’ place, a place in which everyone knows almost everyone. My home town is always busy at summer, although is not a typical Spanish town for holidays. That’s because as ... more

Advantages Advantages History, beahches, seafood, sherry

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can get unbearably hot in summer, the harsh Atlantic wind

The old lady sits in a deck chair on the pavement outside the building that houses her apartment. She shouts across to the waiters who are setting up tables outside the restaurants that line the street. One of them fetches her a glass of wine. A few people are sitting outside on of the bars at the end of the street. One of them is a young woman sipping a glass of chilled sherry; she is looking forward to eating later if only she can choose which enticing eatery to stop at and what to pick from the extensive choice of delicacies from the sea. The city is Cadiz, situated on the southern tip on ... more

If you've had the good fortune to travel much in Latin America, Cadiz may seem strikingly familiar when you first arrive. As much as anything, it's strongly reminiscent of how Havana must have been about fifty years ago, before everything started falling down - only without, perhaps the organised crime and gambling dens. This isn't entirely coincidental; the bulk of Spain's dealings with the Americas went in and out of Cadiz's port from the 19th century onwards, and no small amount of influence would have shipped alongside the exotic fruits and plundered silver. At the grand old age of 3,000 ... more

Cadiz is on a small peninsular in the south of Spain. It is thought to be the oldest city in Europe. Approaching it on a cruise ship is a wonderful experience as the skyline with the gold domed cathedral and the city walls is breathtaking as well as distinctive. This city is virtually totally surrounded by water and at only about 1.5km long and just over 0.5km wide it is very easy to explore on foot and there is little chance of getting lost. The starting point for our explorations was the Plaza de Espana, this attractive square houses the impressive monument to the liberal assembly with ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap, Quite and a non turistic place

Disadvantages Disadvantages Windy, Very few people speak English

First of all, it is not Cadix but Cadiz. I was actually born there and Cadiz is both a city and a province. The city is a very small one, only 7 Km long and about 3Km wide. It has a few very nice hotels facing the beach, which is as long as the city and very crowded during the summer. Since the City is very near to Africa, the climax is very warm even during the winter. It is very humid as well, so it can get chilli at night. It is a very familiar city but it is very difficult to find people who speak English, so I recommend to go with someone who understands spanish. It is not at all a ... more
