I was recently in Bath with my Ciao friends – KathrynE, Offy (Ophelia) and Hpoulton (Hannah). One of the things we did over the weekend was visit Café Cadbury, situated at 23 Union Street in Bath. Being a huge fan of all things chocolate, this seemed an ideal place to eat and in many ways it was.

The café is situated on three floors. The ground floor houses the takeaway and gift shop, where you can buy various choccie goodies for yourself, your family and friends and even more for yourself. Besides the predictable chocolate gifts, you can also buy such things as candles, toys and mugs – all with a Cadbury’s touch to them.

The first floor houses the café itself, with half of it given over to seating and half to the long counter of food and drink. You can have a filling meal here – maybe a baguette or wrap, with a cake or pastry to follow, an ice cream sundae and a cup of tea.

The seating was adequate, but didn’t give you the feel of taking your time and relaxing. There weren’t many children there too, it seemed much more of a place for a few friends to sit and chat over tea and chocolate – which is exactly what we did.

I ordered a Feta cheese, pesto and salad wrap followed by an ice-cream sundae and English Breakfast tea. The wrap was horrible though, far too sickly and weird tasting, so I had to leave it – which was a waste of £2.95. The ice cream was delicious though, with a whole host of flavours to choose from and with Cadbury’s chocolate drizzled over the top and left to harden – yummy!

The tea was fine, though a bit pricey at £1.25. A nice touch is a little indentation on the side of the saucers, where a little Cadbury’s chocolate pudding is added, free of charge.

Hannah, Kathryn and Ophelia enjoyed their food and drinks. These included roast vegetable pastry (£1.50), raspberry flake cake (£2.95), Ciabatta pesto (£3.50) and Cadbury milkshake (£2.25). As you can see, the prices are not cheap. I certainly wouldn’t fancy taking my four kids there at these prices, but it is nice for an occasional treat and I would definitely go back there.

The most successful part of the meal – and the reason for my title – was Ophelia’s chocolate fondue with strawberries and profiteroles to dip in a small bowl of Cadbury’s chocolate. Her face was a picture and she relished every mouthful with pure satisfaction, inspiring me to think up this title at the time!

Once we had finished our meal, we nipped upstairs to use the toilets, only to discover the second floor houses a fairly informal lounge. A large room filled with settees and armchairs, where it did appear you were encouraged to linger – although it was full of students the day we went, which might put others off.

Incidentally, the toilets were amazing, much more suited to the grandeur of a posh hotel with sinks inside each cubicle, each one decorated beautifully and even with pot pourri inside. Stunning. The disadvantage to having such wonderfully luxurious toilets were that there were only two of them and it was a bit of a squeeze waiting, but they still got bonus points for the décor ;-)

Overall, we spent a pleasant time at Café Cadbury and I’m sure we’ll be going there again. It is more expensive than a cuppa and a sandwich would be at other cafes, but with the Cadbury’s name above it, at least you know the chocolate is the best quality. Just ask Offy ;-)
