The sun, the sea, the rocks... Well, the sand would have been a bit of a lie, and playing the alliterative-value/poetic-license card may have incensed those who went in search of a nice beach after reading the review. Those in search of a gorgeous view - both of people and natural scenery - have come to the right place.
Café del Mar and Café Mambo are in a terrace of bars and restaurants just north of San Antonio, but well within walking distance. This geographical location is perfect - it seems a world away from the cheap, taccy, British-seaside-town-in-Spain sprawl that is San Antonio, without the stress of a long journey. Taxis cost around €25 from Ibiza Town, and €15 from San Rafel and San José. The location is such so it faces due west, hence the legendary status about seeing the sun set there.
History. Café del Mar was the first there in the 1980s, followed soon after by Café Mambo. Savannah came in the Mid-90s, and has just celebrated its tenth anniversary. While Café del Mar's reputation is almost solely (excuse pun) based on the sun, Mambo plays host to, well, a host of Radio1 DJs looking for an excuse for a holiday on the white isle, and the BBC station often broadcasts live from the bar; play your cards right and you might get on the radio!
I visited Café Mambo on our final night in Ibiza, waiting for a late plane, for a quick bite to eat and a drink. More by luck than judgement, we arrived at the perfect time; 2 hours before the sunset, there were few people there and we were easily able to get two adjacent tables for our party of nine. However, within half an hour, the place was heaving, and people were ordering drinks from the beach. Obviously the time to arrive will vary in different points during the year, but I would certianly recommend 2 hours before sunset, if that is your reason for coming.
Food and Drink In terms of drinks in Café Mambo, it's your typical bar fare, with beers, wines, spirits, cocktails as well as soft drinks. Prices are good value, in comparison to other bars and clubs, but bear in mind that prices increase by about 20-30% after 6pm. Food-wise, the dishes are pretty standard, nothing spectcular, but this is reflected in the distinctly reasonable prices. I wouldn't come here especially for food - the chances are you'll find somewhere nicer and a bit more authentically local nearby, but chances are, you're not on the Sunset Strip for a meal.
Club reps patrol the terrace, offering all sorts of enticing discounts and free drinks at Pacha, Space, Es Paradis and the like. If you are thinking of going out clubbing that evening, or even later in the week, then it would be a good place to come and pick up discounts. Unfortunately we were faced with telling countless askers that we were heading home tonight, which was a tad depressing!
The sunset reputation is not without reason. It's very romantic and pretty as the sea laps at the rocks, people sitting and listening to the music. There's a slight hint of jealousy as people fly past attached to parachutes behind boats, but life on a beach bar watching a gorgeous sunset can't be too bad... Unless, there are clouds. This semi-spoiled our evening; while the colours were still vibrant, you got the feeling it was only half as good as when the rays were uninterrupted. However, come shine or lack thereof, I would still recommend a trip to either of Café Del Mar or Café Mambo.
Advantages: perfect spot to watch the sunset Disadvantages: none
Sitting on the rocks, sipping a drink, the only noise is from the bar behind playing tranquil and serene music, watching the sun slowly disappear below the sea. Its beautiful.
A trip to Ibiza isn't complete with out a visit to San Antonios sunset strip in the bay of Calo des Moro. Café del mar was built in the 1980s. Is is now joined by Mambo, Savannah and Kanya at al but Café Del Mar is still the most renowned. Café Del Mar produces its own music ... ...trademark mellow Baleraric beat. Since 1994 Café Del Mar has been releasing annual chillout albums.
For those people who are running low on euros !....you can bring your own drinks and sit on the rocks in front of the café, you can still hear the music. Once the sun has left us, there is usually entertainment in the form of fire twirlers. Big Djs like Erick Morillo, Danny Rampling or Roger Sanchez often warm up their decks at next door Café Mambo, ...

Advantages: Fabulous views, brilliant music Disadvantages: Very crowded around sunset
...When I first started visiting, cafe mambo didn't exist and cafe del Mar was a small cafe with a tiny terrace, with the famous Jose Padilla playing laid-back beats to watch the sun go down to to a small "in-the-know" crowd. Now the "sunset strip" is an entirely different animal. Jose has long gone and It's busy, VERY busy around sunset. cafe del Mar has expanded its terrace so some people end up sitting in the carpark but even so, the beach is absolutely ... ...it's different now. Cafe del Mar is slightly more expensive and attracts an older more international crowd. Outside of sunset, it is also quiet most of the time. I recommend sitting on the terrace with a jug of sangria just after sunset: very chilled. sangria is fab, but not cheap at 24 euros for a litre.
Cafe mambo has a younger more exuberent clientele and also hosts a number of pre-club parties as well as live outside broadcasts for amongst others, ...

Advantages: It's marvellous dear. Disadvantages: I don't live there anymore
pair of clubs Pacha and El Divino are both in Ibiza Town on the harbour. Space, the "Daytime Club" is in Playa D'en Bossa. It'd be a constant source of mirth to me and my fellow representatives the number of people who would roll up into our Hotels expecting a street full of clubs. HA bloody HA.
Back in San Antonio Town and onto what I?d call the ?Classier? area of the Town. (Not to say that the West End is a Dump, just to insinuate it enough so that you think it yourselves and feel guilty)
By far the most famous bars in Ibiza are CaféDelMar and CaféMambo ? both on the sunset strip.
Pay twice the price for all drinks and cocktails as on the main street, or, do as I did for 7 months every Wednesday and go to the local Off License and buy a bottle of coke and a bottle of vodka, sit on the rocks in front of these bars enjoying ...

Advantages: The spectacular sunrises, and scenery Disadvantages: The Westend in San An is grim
is an Indian restaurant in San An called the Curry Club - excellent service and food, Coastline Cafe Bar serves excellent Spanish cuisine. Such eateries do cost that bit more but if you want quality it does cost you. If you are luck enough to be mobile check out the restaurants nestled in the hills - stunning views and food.
Sights
Ibiza is a beautiful island with its hills and mountains leading to the sandy coves and beaches. Please do not judge it on the man made beach in San Antonio - the beach is dirty and the sea even worse. Beaches such as Cala Basa or Cala Conta are nice but busy. Numerous coves are sign posted of the roads especially around Portninax - take time to visit.
Ibiza is well known for the sun set - in San Antonio there are the Sun Set Cafes such as Kanya, Coastline, Mambo, Savannah and the best know Cafe ...

Advantages: Ibiza has everything you would want in a holiday Disadvantages: As far as I'm concerned there aren't any
rape pills, so take that as a warning from someone who knows. San Antoni Bay, on the other hand is beautiful in every respect. Some people may say it's part of San Antoni. Well Technically it is, but then it isn't because it is totally different. Put it this way, San Antoni is Cheap as chips, which is why all the idiots go there. San Antoni Bay is where you will find CafeMambo and CafeDelMar. If you are looking for a night on the high life, these are the bars to go to. They are very expensive, but they are worth it when you get there. You'll see why when you go. San Antoni may be a sess pit at night but it's great during the day when all the idiots are asleep with a beautiful beach and some great bars and restaurantes. A great place to go during the day. If you are looking for something a bit more up-market and excentric, Ibiza Town is ...
