Café Rouge is a renowned French style chain of restaurants that opened its first outlet in 1989. Now it has over 90 across the UK. The one I visited in York is in the heart of the shopping area. It is approximately a 5-10 minute walk from York Minster as well as to Clifford's Tower and York Castle Museum.
The external décor is quite rustic with a red theme. The yellow logo of Café Rouge is on a red sign hanging above the entrance to the restaurant. This appearance makes Café Rouge stand out from other surrounding bars and restaurants. However when I came in I was a little surprised with its size. There were just a few tables, one of which was just inside the entrance. Like other bars you can see a few paintings on the walls. However a large mirror occupied an entire wall that made the space feel bigger.
At Café Rouge you can just have a cup of coffee with a croissant in the morning, or pop in for a spot of lunch or even an evening meal. We were there at about 6pm for dinner. Although there were customers already seated we were served quite fast. The staff were mainly young, friendly and efficient. First they brought the menu for us to choose for our dishes. The menu covers a range of French food to suit most tastes. Likewise their wines are predominately French too. The first two pages of the menu display daily specials, which were almost half the price of a la carte items. However you can’t use vouchers for these daily specials. We sampled the Entrecote rouge, a steak with French fries (£15.95). This was the most expensive main course on their menu. The steak was tender and tasty and the sauce that was provided complemented the meat. However the fries were a little disappointing. I am used to British chips. To me the French fries are too thin and too oily. We also tried an offer of two courses (£9.95). After two months I forget what we had, but I remember it was delicious. Our dinner cost £35 inclusive of beers and a tip. Considering what we had and the quality of the food I would say the price was pretty reasonable. I have not been to France so I can’t say it was genuine French food although I prefer to believe it was.
Next day we had a dinner in a local pub that cost us almost £50 yet the food and the service were a lot poorer than that we were given in Café Rouge. On this basis I would recommend Café Rouge for a chance to taste French food. I felt there was one small disappointment and that was the limited space of the restaurant. It was too crowded due to popularity and I felt like I was sitting in the lap of the next customer. You couldn’t help but see each other’s food and listen to each other’s conversation.
Advantages: Lovely food and atmosphere Disadvantages: Watered down lager
Last night me and my girlfriend visited Cafe Rouge in Solihull. I had been to the restaurant in Birmingham and really enjoyed it. Plus we had a voucher to spend so didn't want to miss the opportunity of a buy one meal get a second free. The ambience is nice in this restaurant and it has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. It was a beautiful summer evening and there were a few people on the tables and chairs outside. I say a few because there are is not ... ...in we were greeted very swiftly by a waitress who was very polite and ushered us to our table. We both felt comfortable and showed the waitress the voucher which she was happy to except. Again we did not have to wait long for the menus and were handed them by a foreign gentleman which added to the French feel of the place. The menu consisted of an excellent range of foods. It gives the French name and then an English description underneath. There ...

For my first visit to Cafe Roug, my wife said we should go to the Salford Quays outlet. So, with Tesco vouchers in hand, we made our way there last Saturday. We were early enough to not have to book and got a nice central table. The service was quick and sort of friendly. I am prepared to stand corrected on this one, we were both unconvinced that, despite their French accents, the majority of staff are no more French than myself. The menu is varied ... ...eat fish, you will be stumped apart from one dish. I wouldn't say there was a huge choice but it is ample with four or five options within the main categories of fish, salad and steaks. We started with drinks that were quite expensive in my opinion - £2.70 for a fresh orange and £5.70 for a medium sized glass of wine. Foodwise, I opted for a rib-eye steak with a peppercorn sauce, but even for £18 this only came with French fries (no better than McDonalds ...

In Birmingham you have 2 choices if you want to sample the french delights Cafe Rouge has to offer. Recently, as the new Bullring shopping centre has been restyled and refurbished, a new Cafe Rouge has opened here. This is a great location and gives you the chance to see the bull ring by night and all lit up, which is quite pretty as far as Birmingham goes! The second older Cafe Rouge in Birmingham is located in Brindley Place, another prime location ... ...Broad Street boasts a long stretch of bars, clubs, restaurants and other venues, so is a good place to go if you want to go out after.
In both places the food quality and service is very similar so don't let that be a determining factor when chosing which one to visit. The food is delicious and ranges from shank of lamb on mashed potato and peas to steak to the classic french onion soup and a range of salads. They also serve breakfast, which consists ...

Advantages: Bargain prices, classic French dishes Disadvantages: More adventurous dishes probably best avoided
On a recent trip back to my old university town I was dining alone and did not want to look too sad and pathetic. Chain restaurants are not normally my thing but CafeRouge is rather different in its style: the decor is usually pleasant, food reliable, and I wanted to eat something healthy which ruled out pub food or the Eraina, the Greek taverna of my youth which I would normally have headed for.
CafeRouge is opposite St John's College and next to the Baron of Beef pub, which has been completely destroyed by refurbishers. I can't remember what used to stand on the site where CR now is but it was possibly a woollens shop.
Anyway, I looked at the menu and noted the two-course specials for less than a tenner and also the fact that many of the courses came with frites, which of course I wasn ...
Advantages: Nice Decor, Good Menu, Great Staff, Decent Price Disadvantages: Not Particularly Disabled Friendly In Winter, ASlightly Out Of The Way
After a tough day's shopping with my beautiful girlfriend we found ourselves at Blue Rinse just by the Corn Exchange having entirely missed lunch due to the rigours of finding jumper dresses in this seasons new collections.
After a couple of minutes discussion we decided that we would try CafeRouge, since I had been to the one in St John's Wood in London some years before and it was pretty good.
We were greeted immediately by a smiling waitress who asked where we would like to sit and offered us the choice of a pair of tables. We chose one in a quiet little corner as she followed us down with the menus. She immediately informed us of the changes in the menu and the dishes that weren't available, rather than waiting for a semi-apologetic 16 year old who doesn't really care to come back after we ordered to tell us that they'd run ...
Advantages: Variety of food, good prices, nice location Disadvantages: Chain-owned
The CafeRouge chain runs all around the country, with one in most towns. The Cambridge restaurant is in a scenic location, not far from the River Cam, on Bridge Street. The decor inside is nice, and there is normally a good atmosphere. The French-style cuisine is normally cooked to a high standard, and there is a fairly wide choice on the menu.
Whilst some of the dishes can be slightly more pricey, they are fairly in line with similar chain restaurants, such as Bella Italia etc (around the £8-£10 mark for main meals). They also now offer Prix Fixe menus, where you can get 2 courses for £8.95 or 3 courses for £10.95, between 12pm and 5pm. On top of this, CafeRouge are now offering a set meal for £10.95, which includes 2 courses and a drink. For those wanting to save even more, Tesco Clubcard points can be converted into vouchers to ...
