Cairngorm

Watching my brother-in-law-to-be, all 19 and a half stone of him, slide gracefully across the piste, I began to wonder if spending my stag weekend skiing in the Cairngorms was such a great idea. Ordinarily, seeing a pal skiing makes me feel warm inside because it generally means I’m skiing ... Read review

Cairngorm Blimey. God's Duvet Rustles.

Advantages: Some Snow
Disadvantages: Windy pops

.../> We were in the Cairngorm mountain range, where they have a fantastic funicular railway that runs every 10 minutes or so to get you from the Ranger Base Ticket and car parking area to the very top Ptarmigan station in an impressive 10 minute ride.
The funicular will carry up to 120 at a time standing room only in winter, or 60 seated in summer.
We’d had to wait from 1000am until 1200 midday for the funicular to re-open due to high ...
...£10 each refunds from the Cairngorm Mountain Shop in Glenmore from whom we’d hired the equipment and bought the passes.
In future, I’d definitely pre-book the ski lessons to guarantee availability, but for lift passes, it’s worth getting them on the mountain so that refunds in the event of lift closures are easily obtained. This would probably explain the queues when there are some.

So, Day one was a blow out for 4 of us.

Why ski in Scotland

Advantages: easy to get to (especially is you live in Scotland!),closeness to Aviemore
Disadvantages: poor weather and sometimes poor snow cover

...which operates between Aviemore and Cairngorm Base Station, which now also houses the new Funicular Railway. They are usually quite good at keeping the roads opened and if they are closed first thing then it doesn't usually take them too long to get them opened. There are a number of pretty decent runs at Cairngorm ( about 5 red runs, 10 blue, 5 green and there is are even 2 blacks!) when there is good snow cover, which unfortunaely isn't that often ...
...do decide to venure to Cairngorm for the first time, don't wear your new skis - even on a good day there is a chance of finding a rock. So once again, why ski in Scotland? - if it is all you have got, it is better than not skiing at all!! The place to go

Advantages: learning, great looking area, fun, exciting
Disadvantages: exhausting

I had never been Snowboarding before and was looking for somewhere that could offer me a cheap package and a tutorial to set me on my way!! I can assure this is the place to go. 15 miles from Aviemore, you start to climb the mountain to cairngorm, you goet to the car park and it is there your wonderful journey really starts. They ohave a special one day offer - £45 for this you get - equipment rental, a 4 hour lesson by a qualified instructor and ...
...£12 you can rent clothing to keep the cold at bay. The equipment is in great condition and the people who help kit you out are very helpful and know what they are talking about. You meet your instructor at 10am and he takes you up the the descent where he will instruct you for the day. This is when all teh fun begins!!!!!!!! You get taught all the basics - in great detail - not missing aything out. You get shown how to but your board on, how to ...

Cairngorm - The place to be

Advantages: Near, cheaper than Europe, cheap accomodation
Disadvantages: Lack of snow, sometimes bad conditions

Ok, so the Cairngorms is not the Alps or British Columbia - however, for those who want a quick weekend break away snowboarding or ski-ing then look no further. Its very easy to get to; 2 and a half hours drive from Glasgow, or there's a train that stops in Aviemore. Accomodation is mainly in Aviemore (9 miles away) and is very vaired and generally very good. There are two youth hostels - I would recommend the one actually in Aviemore as it is big, ...
...pubs (very important) and is a bargain at £10 a night - even in the ski season which is really amazing when you compare it to prices abroad. A car is not even a necessity in Aviemore as there is a shuttle bus to the mountain all day. The conditions? Hmm, what can I say - the Cairngorms are not renowned for having a lot of snow, however, I have snowboarded there at Easter for the last eight years and have never had a problem - there has always been ...

Skiing for the very keen

Advantages: Its in the UK
Disadvantages: Weather

I’ve skied at Cairngorm several times since the mid eighties, and still have a soft spot for it. The main problem is the wildly unpredictable weather. I was there on a “good” weekend this year. This mean’t that the lifts were open up to ¾ of the way (horizontal hail and 30 m.p.h. + winds above that) and you could ski to the bottom. There was a lot of exposed rock and icy slides, but still enough skiing to make it worth the effort(As long as you don’t ...
...there I stayed in the Cairngorm Hotel, which was a nice friendly place with a good bar and decent sized baths. It would be silly to decide to come here more than 3 or 4 days in advance, as high winds and lack of snow can soon shut the slopes. I'll be trying to get a couple of weekends in this season. Also, as Slater was wondering about boarding here - Yes it does seem boarder friendly. I've done some boarding here as well as skiing and didn't get ...

Discover The Beauty Of Artic Britain!

Advantages: Fantastic Scenery, Plenty To See And Do
Disadvantages: It's A Long Drive To Get There

I consider myself to have had a pretty good childhood. When I was young my parents had a VW Camper Van (In fact we had two different ones over a 15 year span) and every school holiday we would take off somewhere. We never went abroad. I was 18 before I ever left these shores but by the time that I did discover sunnier climates I knew that I had seen much more of my own country than any of my friends, and along the way I had discovered many little gems that I would return back to as an adult time and time again. One such gem are the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland.... THE LOCATION The Cairngorm Mountains are situated in the North East corner of the Scottish Highlands, lying to the West of Aberdeen and the South of Inverness. Access to this vast area which covers 1,467 square miles can be made from various points, but it is ...

A Train Journey Through the Clouds

Advantages: To see sights you might never see
Disadvantages: None

Even although I live in Scotland, I love it and really can't get enough of visiting it's spectacular, breathtaking scenery. It's hard to explain the feeling I get when travelling through the mountains in particular, the eerie stillness is so haunting and peaceful, you really feel content with yourself when travelling through this beautiful remote wilderness. One of my favourite mountain ranges in Scotland is the Cairngorm Mountain Range and the best way to visit this mountain range is on the Cairngorm Mountain Railway. This railway is a funicular system, there are two carriages which are connected by a cable and therefore pull each other up and down the mountain. There are 3 compartments in each train. During the summer months each train carries about 60 seated passengers and it takes about 9 minutes to travel the 2kms and 460m ...

Reach Out And Touch The Sky

Advantages: Breathtaking scenery. Excellent value for money.
Disadvantages: Not a lot!

~ ~ A visit to the Highlands of Scotland wouldn?t be considered complete unless you had ventured at least once out into the natural environment; the rugged and spectacular mountains. It?s the mountains and surrounding scenery that attract countless thousands of visitors to the Cairngorm area of the Scottish Highlands every year, both as tourists in the Summer, and in the winter season, to ski on the mountain?s snow covered slopes. ~ ~ I have to admit to a certain stirring of my Scottish blood when I visit the Highlands, as images are conjured up in my head of the ?Heilanders? of old, and how the clans used to gather here in the mountain glens to mount attacks on the ?Auld Enemy?, the invading English. Mind you, the English are still here in force in the modern-day Highlands, as almost every second business, hotel, or guest house would ...
