Reef Magic Cruise - Cairns (Marine World)
When I was in Cairns I decided I wanted to take a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef. I had snorkelled previously at the Whitsunday Island and enjoyed it very much so thought it would be nice to have another go at snorkelling but this time out in the open ocean. I booked the Reef Magic Cruise with the YHA, which was hassle free and I only had to walk a short distance to the Marina, which was the meeting ... ...over entering the Great Barrier Reef Heritage area. This charge is along with Jetty tax, Administration fees and any other levies are included in the cruise fare. If you wanted a transfer to the meeting place this was an additional cost.
Once all the paperwork was sorted at the marina we boarded the Reef Magic boat to start our 90 minute journey from the Reef fleet terminal to the outer Barrier Reef. The boat journey there was slightly rocky but ...

Kuranda by Skyrail/Cairns
Advantages: Good Day Out Disadvantages: None
I have just come back from a trip to Australia and I visited Cairns and the surrounding area and I found this amazing . One of the best things which I did was to visit Kuranda by Skyrail and the trip was out of this world.
Usually one takes the Skyrail one way then there is the train to return in. But I only had enough time to go up by Skyrail and return by Skyrail.
There is about 4.7 miles of cableway and it was completed in 1995 this only to ... ...by helicopterwhich advoid distrubances to the rainforests. The towers were very large and the largest one was in the region of 133 feet. The Skyrail consisted of 114 gondola cabins which could hold about six people. Red Peak Station at 545 metres which is 1788 feet is the highest point on the cableway.
When I was travelling up I sawdifferent types of trees and plants and I was able to get out at Barron Falls Station and Red Peak Station where there ...

Don't miss the Daintree!
Advantages: Superb experiance Disadvantages: Hungry crocs
...wheel drive bus to the Daintree Rainforest. This has been on my list of Australian places to visit since I came here as a traveller in 2003. On that trip it was just too far off my route to make it feasible. I did come to Queensland but I only got as far north as Brisbane. The Daintree is about a days drive from Brisbane which gives you some idea about the size of this place.
I selected this tour from some flyers at the reception area of the resort ... ...of Cape Tribulation and The Daintree River. It also visited Mosman Gorge which I hadn't heard of but nevertheless looked impressive.
We were collected from the resort at 8am and started 1.5 hour trip up the Captain Cook Highway to the Daintree. Our first stop was to be the Daintree River Crossing. On the way our driver and guide, Mat told us about all the movies which were filmed along this stretch of coast (none of which I can remember now!) and ...

Cairns Australia sky rail to Kuranda
Advantages: Not far from Cairns. Super views. Disadvantages: None I can think of.
The village of Kuranda is north of Cairns and there are two excellent ways of getting there. One is by rail and the other, which i took, is by skyrail. I did not book to take the skyrail, I just turned up on the bus that you book a return on from Cairns. The skyrail is like a cable car thats seat around 6 people, but as I turned up by myself I had the car to myself. On the way to Kuranda the car stops at certain points on the way were you can leave ... ...photos and read the information signs about the plants etc. Then when you have finished at that point you catch another cable car to the next stop. The skyrail goes over a large gorge at one point and the views are awsome. It takes around half an hour to get to Kuranda in one go, but could take longer depending how long you walk round at the stops on the way.
At Kuranda there are a few shops and activities and restauraunts/bars. When you have finished ...

Tjapukai By Night
Advantages: You got to see some Aboriginal culture Disadvantages: Wasn't as good as expected
...were advised to go to Tjapukai by Night. Promised to see culture in the most powerful and personal way we bought our tickets. From what we understood a dinner and show would be what we could expect. Our tickets cost $123, which included share accommodation in the YHA. Share accommodation generally costs around $20 so say it cost me $100 for the show and dinner including my transfers. We purchased out tickets in the YHA in advance.
One Australian ... ...$70 and family $376.50.
Tjapukai by Night is open 7pm to 10pm every night. It is however closed on Christmas Day. Tjapukai is an all weather venue which is great as in the wet season (when I visited) there tends to be heavy showers which come out of no-where and quite often thunder storms.
