One of the best things which I did was to visit Kuranda by Skyrail and the trip was out of this world. Usually one takes the Skyrail one way then there is the train to return in. From what we understood a dinner and show would be what we could expect. Our tickets cost $123, which included share accommodation in the YHA. Tjapukai is an all weather venue which is great as in the wet season (when I visited) there tends to be heavy showers which come out of no-where and quite often thunder storms. Advantages: Close to nature
Disadvantages: not for the faint hearted who are scared of creepy crawlies

...really want to experience the Daintree rainforest you have to stay there a few days rather than go on a day trip from Cairns. Take the Daintree River Ferry (about $10 Aus) & look out for crocs as you cross. We stayed at Deep Forest Lodge - deep in the forest as the name suggests. Self-contained cabins in an amazing spot. The first night took some getting used to because of all the unusual sounds of the forest at night but once you get beyond that ...
...preferably 4X4) if you want to go further north after Daintree/Cape Trib (up to Cape York) - and visit the Bat House to see some gorgeous & surprisingly cute orphaned flying foxes.
