you Cairn do it

Advantages: gateway to areas of stunning, natural beauty
Disadvantages: lack of history, no real beaches

Cairns is a strange place in that you do not really go to Cairns to experience Cairns. It is more of a focal point for exploring other areas around it. That is to say that Cairns has not got lots of attractions in it's own right because it has but the vast majority of visitors will use it as a stopping off place to see both Cairns and other attractions. After our trip to Ayers Rock, Cairns was totally different but equally appealing.

...in "them thar hills" put Cairns firmly on the map in 1876 as a frontier town. When this began to die out Cairns began to thrive as a fishing and pearling area and the lush land was ideal for sugar cane plantations which are still abundant today.

It is difficult to believe that little over twenty years ago, Cairns was still a sleepy town but with the building of an International airport tourism exploded and Cairns is an extremely ... more

I Cairn Help But Recommend

Advantages: Cheap base for the area
Disadvantages: Not that much in the town itself

...me not to go to Cairns as it's 'dirty', 'ugly' and 'boring'. Never one to listen to comments like that, I still decided to stay there for a week, shunning Port Douglas and Palm Cover in favour of accommodation in Cairns itself, and was determined to enjoy myself, or at least experience enough to write a scathing review if need be. Happily this wasn't the case and I spent my week in Cairns wondering what it was that others didn't like. Cairns is a ...
...The one negative feature of Cairns is its apparent lack of history: similar to lots of other places in Australia there are few beautiful buildings or places of historical significance, and no galleries or museums worth mentioning (other than to say the ones I came across were not worth a visit). However, apart from this, Cairns has lots to offer, both immediately within the town and just outside. ~~~ Within Cairns ~~~ You can't swim in the sea ...

A few days in the tropics ...

Advantages: Just a short plane ride from New Zealand
Disadvantages: Summer weather

...was my first time to Cairns so we rented a car and went off exploring far and wide. We were only going to be in the area for 41/2 days so we wanted to see as much as we could of the region while we were there. We visited in mid-August and the weather was great. Warm and tropical but not too hot or humid. It was prone to showers (downpours) but these were never enough to be a hinderance. Just added to the tropical feel of the place. My impression ...
...groups. As the waters around Cairns are tidal mudflats, not to mention full of undesirables such as Box Jellyfish and crocodiles, people prefer to swim in the large pool. We decided to stay in Cairns itself rather than head north to the beach areas of Port Douglas and The Norhtern beaches. We found great accommodation at The Rainforest Grove, we had a self-contained unit overlooking the rainforest. it was quiet, comfortable and reasonably priced ...

Banana benders here we come

Advantages: the reef, the rainforests, the fauna
Disadvantages: partly crowded

...with an international airport is Cairns (CNS), where Jumboloads of Japanese and European travellers gather. It has the necessary infrastructure with backpacker lodgings for a few quid and top notch hotels closing in on Trinity Wharf on the other end of the scale. We wanted to see the environs first and in style: it had to be a vintage 1967 MGB roadster, lovingly cared for by the enthusiasts from "Cairns Sports Cars". It costs some GBP 35 per day ...
...in your arms. Back in Cairns we make a shopping spree and end up with an ebony figure of 30 cm beautifully handcrafted and decorated with mother-of-pearl by the people of the distant Trobriand Islands. We get invitations for a balloon ride with the inevitable champagne breakfast, for nostalgic plane-rides in DC 3s or WWII Tiger Moths, a trainride to Kuranda, etc., but what we really have come for is the REEF! We decided for an early morning seaplane ...

Sunlight At The OK Coral

Advantages: Location, Location, Location.
Disadvantages: Isolation, Isolation, Isolation.

Contrary to what we expected, Cairns turned out to be quite a small town. The population is set at just over 100,000 people and the city centre is neat and compact. At first the place makes little or no impression. It is obvious that tourism is the mainstay and without it, the capital of the North would likely be little more than a backwater. Cairns has a uniquely Oz feel to it. The local bars tout topless gambling nights, check shirted shower avoiding ...
...in front of the central Cairns shopping plaza.. Temperatures in town can soar during the day so much so that when you enter an air conditioned shop you feel like you've just arrived in Antarctica. Heading out into the sunshine again fogs up your glasses such is the intense heat so watch out for those four wheeled range rovers. Cairns' city centre is roughly 8 km from the airport. There are a number of ways of getting into town. The expensive airport ...

Cairns a great Tropical Base.

Advantages: easy base location
Disadvantages: be prepaired to meet many of your fellow travellers there.

Cairns is one of the easyiest towns to use as a base for the "beginner" backpacker or traveler. The sheer number of travelers to Cairns have encouraged businesses that are offering tempting holiday services to the visitors of the area have been forced to compete for services (like pick ups from accomodations) and it is easy to find something to do for the next day while taking as stroll along the internationally well trodden path known as the esplanade. ...
...interesting places to visit in Cairns like the Botanical gardens. If you are interested in the vast array of tropical foilage you will be wowed as the abundance of exotic blooms that are on display in the park. There is a lovely little cafe there to take care of your thirst and appetite as well. Accorss the street from the Botanical gardens are the Centenary gardens where two other very different habitats await visitors. There is an interesting raised ...

Kuranda by Skyrail/Cairns

Advantages: Good Day Out
Disadvantages: None

I have just come back from a trip to Australia and I visited Cairns and the surrounding area and I found this amazing . One of the best things which I did was to visit Kuranda by Skyrail and the trip was out of this world. Usually one takes the Skyrail one way then there is the train to return in. But I only had enough time to go up by Skyrail and return by Skyrail. There is about 4.7 miles of cableway and it was completed in 1995 this only to One year to construct. All towers were lifted into place by helicopterwhich advoid distrubances to the rainforests. The towers were very large and the largest one was in the region of 133 feet. The Skyrail consisted of 114 gondola cabins which could hold about six people. Red Peak Station at 545 metres which is 1788 feet is the highest point on the cableway. When I was travelling up I ...

A view from the tree tops.

Advantages: plenty to see and do, great history, interesting flora & fauna
Disadvantages: remote

No trip to Cairns is complete without a trip to Kuranda. Situated 25 kms from Cairns it is perhaps a trip best taken via an official tour which also takes in the journey to and from Kuranda. The journey to and from is undoubtedly part of the destination. We booked the "Kuranda" tour with Tropical Wings (can be viewed at www.tropicalwings.com.au) via the hotel. This cost around £50 each (£25 child) but was a full day tour starting at 7:30 when we were picked up by coach at the hotel. There were four parts to this tour starting with a short journey to the Skyrail terminal which is a ski lift up the mountain and over the Rainforest, a world heritage site. At this stage the coach driver left us and the itinerary advised that he would pick us up in just over two hours time in front of the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. "Where is it ...

Great Hostel with Free Bus service!

Advantages: Free Breakfast and bus service
Disadvantages: Messy rooms

Serpent Hostel Cairns I have to admit this hostel was very good value for money, and although it is a bit far out the transport provided by the hostel made it just as convenient. Rooms: I was in a 14 bed dorm room and I have to say it was a real mess, I got the impression that a lot of people staying at this hostel where long term stays so they had stuff scattered everywhere. I understand from others that the smaller rooms with less people where very clean and tidy so perhaps I was just unfortunate. All rooms had air conditioning which is a brilliant as it is very hot and sticky in Cairns. No lockers though. Bath Room: Separate male and female bathrooms are available on every level, they were very clean and pleasant to use, with enough facilities so that queues where not a problem. Kitchen: The kitchen yet gain as in ...
