Happy hour is a movable treat in The Tropical Queenslander Advantages: Moderately priced self-catering accomodation in Cairns Disadvantages: Decor a bit dated and food in restaurant looked uninteresting The Tropical Queenslander Hotel, Cairns LOCATION: The Tropical Queenslander hotels in Cairns are both located Lake Street which is about 15 minutes walk to the main centre of Cairns but about 5 minutes to the nearest shops and take away restaurants and a bar. Both the hotels are classified as 3.5 * accommodation with self catering facilities. The Tropical Queenslander which is where stayed had 58 rooms so it was quite a small complex and was only ... ...back and the Reception was at the front. The complex spread across a block so that the back entrance was on a different street to the front and reception area. RECEPTION: The reception was NOT open 24 hours so if you were arriving late I would imagine you had to make special arrangements. Reception actually closed at 8pm which could also become a problem as the only safe/safety deposit was in Reception. TERRIBLE and HORRIBLE, DISGUSTING Advantages: location Disadvantages: all other things ...stayed for 5 nights at Gilligans BED BUG Backpackers Resort - the first two nights my friend and I stayed in a 4-bed dorm and we thought we were in the best hostel ever ... anyway, things changed. 2 other friends joined us and we moved into a 8-bed dorm. First night was ok (ok it was loud, cause its a party hostel and we got no sleep) but before 2nd night we found out the ALL beds were infested with lots of BED BUGS - we moved/swiched 3 (!) times ... ...front desk just laughed at us - nobody ever said sorry or anything else. We had booked 6 nights - before the last night we again found out that in this "new" room were also BED BUGS. Cairns Central YHA - great bargin! The best place to stay in Cairns Advantages: Extremely clean, fantastic facilities and brilliant location Disadvantages: Check in not until 2pm. ...that I could not fault Gilligans and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. If you have just started your trip in Australia they have a helpful tour desk with lots of offers so they can help plan your journey.The bar area is a great place to meet new people and had a great chilled atmosphere.This is definitely a place for young backpackers and like-minded people.
