Cairo is one of those cities that is still very old fashioned at grass root levels with plenty to see and do.
The obvious sight is the pyramids and sphinx at Giza. I was shocked when I went there as you are travelling through large blocks of flats and then in the background is the Pyramids. They are massive and very impressive, and although you are not allowed to climb them its one of those places that you must have your picture taken at. The camel hire there is quite reasonable and a good way of getting about the Pyramids, another good camera opportunity. If you get a chance come back in the evening and see the light show around the Pyramids and Sphinx it is very impressive but get there early as its full of Japanese and Germans.
You must visit the Museum to see the artefacts and wealth of all the great kings that have been buried in the ‘Valley of the Kings’ its quite breathtaking and amazing how they did a lot of it so many years ago.
The Cairo Tower is worth a visit and the view from the top is fabulous and you are able to see from the Pyramids to the tenniscourts of the Hilton.
The food is very varied and quite spicy but very reasonable. But be wary that you need a cast iron stomach to eat in the local’s restaurants and cafes I had many a dash to the loo after a dodgy dinner.
The people are very friendly but beware the women are treated very differently to the men and women wondering around flashing legs and cleavage are seen as bad women. The temperature is hot, hot, hot and make sure you have Malaria tablets as the mosquitoes were made for Cairo.
