I live in Cairo with my Egyptian husband and baby daughter and so I thougt I would write giving an insider's view of the capital. Number one is that it's huge, enormous, dirty, hot and stiffling and I love it. The culture is apparent from the east to the west and is full of facinating sites, oasis of palm clubs, bazaars, pyramids, and night life. It's a great place to come if the people that you are travelling with like a diverse amount of activities. For those who like to lounge by the pool there are some great plam clubs, hotelswimming pools, etc. with views of everything from the pyramids to palm trees (to the airport, not so romantic) and come at a reasonable price. shopping includes gold an diamonds which are a very reasonable price to the bazaars like Khan Il Khalili steeped with tradition and rip off merchants but great fun none the less where you can sample traditional cuisine and buy great gifts for the folks back home. For those who like the great outdoors there is pony trecking round the pyramids, a short airplane ride to Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada where you get some of the best diving in the world and of course the faithful camel rides which you should do at least once. It's not expensive though be prepared to bargain for absoloutly everything from the taxi rides to the shopping. It's already warm now (end of March) and by the end of April is suntan weather. The people are friendly, the service dreadful and the whole counry generally lots of fun. Come with the view that you're not necessarily going to get everywhere on time and take it like an adventure - something I have learned to do in the four years I have been here.

I must get my pale ass out to Cairo this year. I have got a new bird as well, so that could be fun. I always take my girlfriends out to Egypt which I find very enriching.
