Fabulous

Advantages: Haven to relax after a day sightseeing
Disadvantages: Still some refurbishment going on in hotel

...the hustle and bustle of Cairo and it is really beautiful throughout. As we arrived very late one evening we had arranged for the hotel's meet and greet service which was excellent and made the experience less daunting. Having said that our experiences at Cairo airport have been better than at some uk airports! It was an excellent hotel and the staff were all very helpful. We ate at the Waves snack bar and Harry's Pub and the food was excellent at ...
...guide to show us around Cairo and I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and him to really make your visit to Cairo special. Our tour guide was Rany Mostafa and I cannot praise him highly enough! He has a brilliant website called Tour Guide Egypt full of information that will help you make the most of your trip. Although the hotel can arrange for trips for you it really made a difference having someone so informative, enthusiastic and helpful to ...

Not a mirage, only the service disappeared

Advantages: Beautiful building and surroundings, great facilities
Disadvantages: Service was a mirage, outside the city

The JW Marriott, Mirage City, Cairo is something more than a mirage. As we approached, two giant sandstone pillars loom to one side, replicas of ancient Egyptian construction, and I thought, "this could either be very tacky or very impressive". Well, I was very impressed by the hotel, the facilities, the design, but unfortunately the overall experience was a bit disappointing. Atleast, it was when I stayed there late in 2003. Sprawling around several ...
...first floor there is a JW Steakhouse which is very pleasantly atmospheric; the one time we ate there, however, it was disappointing as they didn't have any fillet steak (in a Steakhouse? Bah!) and would not allow any other steak to be used for the "Surf and Turf" that I wanted; the sirloin I had instead was about 30% fat and gristle. There is a Middle Eastern restaurant, Ahlein, on the first floor and a cigar & whiskey lounge. Off to one side, on ...

Comfortable Cairo

Advantages: good location, clean and comfortable
Disadvantages: none

The Dutch Golden Tulip hotel chain has two hotels in Egypt. One in Cairo and the other is a resort hotel on the Red Sea. On a recent visit to Cairo, I stayed at the Cairo hotel. It is a four star hotel and rooms start at about EUR65 a night. The hotel is located in Zamalek, an island on the Nile in a fairly quiet area (by Egyptian standards) with lots of shaded avenues and 19th century buildings, including many homes of foreign dignitaries. Zamalek ...
...several western chain fast food restaurants nearby (Pizza Hut, McDonalds, etc.) and a supermarket just around the corner. The hotel also has its own bakery with very good pastries and breads. It is an area that is popular with a lot of foreigners, particularly Europeans. There is also an internet café just across the street. While there is no metro station nearby, taxis can quickly and easily take you anywhere. Zamalek is less than 5 minutes from ...

Hotel so close to the pyramids!!

Advantages: location location location
Disadvantages: further away from downtown

this hotel is probably the most unique hotel in the world as it is the one which you wake u and can actually see the great pyramids from, so close that you think you can reach out and touch them!! ok not that close but you know what i mean. we stayed here and it is literally awesome how close you are to the pyramids, waking up and seeiing them in their glory, was fantastic. so in this respect, it is a fantastic place to stay. my advice would be ...
...couple or 3 days from your holiday base n egypt, then split cairo up into 2 parts. downtown where you are near the nile and the hubbub of the city. and Giza, where you see the pyramid, sphinx etc. at Giza, stay overnight in this hotel so you get the best location, at an affordable price. downsides are that when you book, be very specific about wanting a pyramid view room, as they may put you in a room overlooking the car park if your not specific. ...

A good standard hotel in an excellent location

Advantages: good location, staff and desert!
Disadvantages: NO swimming pool!!!

...in the summer. The Sheraton was in an ideal location in the centre of Downtown Cairo. Brilliant location. The rooms were quite big, but one thing we did have to do was change ours as the lighting in the bathroom was not good, and was loose. However, they were very accomodating. Walk out of the hotel and the Nile is not far away. Fantastic at sunset to walk across one of the bridges and take in the atmosphere. The food places are not far away, we ...
...The hotel itself is quite classy, and I especially took a lioking to the deserts tray at the restaurant downstairs. the food is average to good, but the staff are quite excellent. very friendly and accomodating. There was live entertainmemt when we were there, which was ok (remember that you are in the heart of Cairo!) but i enjoyed the rooftop area. Here, you can relax with a sheesha (waterpipe), some food, watching some arabic tv or music, and ...
