The hotel Cala n Bosch is situated in the resort of Cala n Bosch which also happens to be the furthest resort that you could possibly get to from Mahon Airport. The hotel itself towers above Cala n Bosch and can be seen as you drive down the main road that comes from Ciutadella approaching the resort. Transfer times could be 1 hour to 1 hour 30 depending on time of day or if you have other stops.
The resort of Cala n Bosch is set around a pleasant, relaxing and friendly man-made marina with an abundance of shops, restaurants and cafés. It also features a kiddies play area called the Goodie Goodie restaurant which is packed with fun and activities for kids and teenagers.
From a room at the front of the hotel (main entrance side) you will get fantastic views of the marina and the surrounding areas and a sea view. The other side which is the side everyone wants is facing the beach, this is the side that gets the sun all day long with a great sea-view and on a clear day the island of Majorca appears in the horizon with its rocky terrain.
As you appraoch the hotel towards the rear you will enter a car parking area, this is fantastic for anyone who hires or intends to hire a car (which can be dificult in high summer season), you can park your car easily outside the hotel reception which for many hotels around the island is an asset because many don't have their own parking facilities apart from the road outside!
Steps take you into the reception area but a ramp was also introduced for buggys, wheelchairs etc. But proceed with caution, this ramp is extremely steep and a great deal of force would need to be used especially for a person in a wheelchair to achieve getting up the ramp. I would say coming down it would not be too much of an issue!
You walk through some sliding doors which lead into the spacious reception area with its 1980's decor and wood panels. A small and abrupt reception team await your arrival or answer any queries you may have. If you have your own holiday representative just to the side of reception is where you will find the array of colourful noticeboards from the tour companies with details of visit times and extra information.
Just around this corner also you will find a stash of safety deposit boxes. They are not provided in the rooms but for your disposal in reception! At least someone will be seen if they try and break into it. Keys are available from the reception staff for a hire charge but their is not enough for every room to have one. Alot of people who should hire them out don't so usually their is some left!
Towards the back of the reception area is a staircase and a door to your right. The staircase if you go up will take you too one of the many floors above, but if you go down a little surprise awaits you! A childrens club (if you have kids) is tucked away down here and is great, you don't hear them running and screaming about and they can shout as much as they want! A tour company such as Thomson operates the childrens club but it is usually restricted just to Thomson guests. However beside this club the hotel usually run their own for any other children or the same kids from the Thomson team can join in that also!
The door to the right leads into a bar area which is quite big but not really big enough for the amount of guests the hotel holds. This is quite disappointing as in the evenings it can get pretty rammed and the entertainment can be hard to see over and around everyone else. I simply suggest walking out and into the marina to a lively bar such as Britannia Bar or Flamingoes or the Irish bar tucked away behinf flamingoes, they all have live music and a great service! Flamingoes also has a range of things cracking off to keep kids occupied also such as a bucking bull thingy and go-karts (small kids).
Drinks that are part of the all-inclusive package are local spirits etc but the beer is great! You have to pay extra for smirnoff ices and bacardi breezers which is what most people do or try them all out until you find one you like!
The entertainment team are very good and can be seen wandering about all day every day! They get everyone involved with Archery, Bowls, Crazy Golf (onsite), Table Tennis touraments, anything to keep everone not just the kids occupied. In the evenings the hotel generally has 'professional' shows on or outside acts as they otherwise are known. They do Flamenco Dancing to a Hypnotist. Despite the bar being rammed the hypnotist is the funniest night and I would recommend you stay to watch it (if they still have him). He is English so who knows....
You must understand that many people, probably yourself if you decide to visit don't venture far from the hotel. Simply because its an all-inclusive and everything is free. Which is a bit disappointing because unless you have done it all before the island and definatley the resort of Cala n Bosch has so much to offer. The hotel food although pretty ok, can at least once be missed for an evening out into the MArina to pick a nice restaurant and have a meal out.
Night-time is the best time around the Marina, the boats, restaurants and cafés are lit up and a gentle stroll is quite relaxing. It would only take 10 mins to get round the whole marina and back to the hotel again. Restaurants around the Marina can be anything from Fish, Italian, British, Indian, Mexican and Spanish foods, I think their is even a place for German food...what im trying to say is, the hotel isn't everything about your holiday! Most of the bars also offer SKY Sports and various other events that may be happening at the time your away. If football season is on the bars can become quite crowded but generally with a great atmosphere. Oh if your missing your soaps....
At the back of the bar lies the restaurant, it has a long island that runs through the middle of it with all the food for the morning, dinner or evening layed out. Surrounding this are the tables and chairs. When the restaurant first opens it is quite hard to find a seat so you may have to choose your times carefully. The food is ok, not fantastic, but same usual all-inclusive food.
Near to the restaurant entrance you will also find the doors that lead out onto the terrace and the hotel pool and pool bar. Again you will have your bands around you for all-inclusive and the pool bar serves drinks all day. The pool is the busiest area of the hotel during the day, some people settle for sitting on the balcony if they have the sunny side rooms, otherwise a few more steps and you land onto the beach. The beach personally is not for me and I prefer a sunbed so get in early!!!
The rooms are of an OK standard, im not a 'snob' but I do like to feel comfortable and the decor made it a bit disappointing but you soon forget about it when you arrive. The beds are a mixture of hard and soft matresses. I don't know why, maybe some have been worn in more than other...?
The staff are lovely people, the reception staff have been in the hotel for years, they know everything about the island and the hotel. They also tend to be a little grouchy. The entertainment team are fantastic but can disappear at random times. Most of the staff are not local residents as the island closes vastly over winter. The resorts become ghost towns and restaurants, bars, cafés all close and board up! The staff are generally from Majorca or mainland spain who have come to work for the summer. Much like the Brits going to work in a few bars in greece or something for a summer.
The hotel does cater for couples but mainly it is a family hotel and an abundance of kids are screaming past you or a group of teenagers are causing trouble. But at least they are making friends and out the adults way!
Me personally, I would not recommend the hotel for couples and do honestly believe that other hotels in the surrounding area offer a higher level of service and food along with cheaper prices and another star on top for the same price (only you would have to go half board) but in my opinion I would rather do that. If you have children, the hotel is ideal and in one of the best locations on the island!
The hotels are used by nealry all tour operators so the hotel is not only filled with anyone and everyone it also has multi national guests which you will notice when the same bingo number is read out in four or five different languages. But because of this at least you can look around for the best price from various holiday companies.
Overall, would I recommend it? Yes for families with children but not really for couples. Some people may like it like that and enjoy the atmosphere, but it really is a hotel for children and teenagers with parents in tow. It is fun and friendly and everyone always makes new friends, the kids are always busy off doing their own thing and of course out the parents way! Again, im sure a couple could easily stay in a nearby hotel such as the Valetin Star or Hotel Macarella on a 4* type accomodation with better comfort and style of hotel on a half board basis for around the same price as this all-inclusive Hotel cala n Bosch. But thats my opinion....Happy Holidays....
Advantages: proximity to beach and marina , very friendly staff, in house entertainment Disadvantages: repetive food, hotel in need of refurbishment
THis hotel is suitable for families and couples and considering Menorca is reputed to be a quiet island this was a very lively holiday....The hotel is all inclusive and is adjacent to a fabulous beachand near to a very picturesque marina with numerous and varied bars and restaurants.......I loved the location of the hotel because if you got bored with lying around the pool you had the option of the spotless beach with magnificent waves on most days ... ...boat trip to most places on the island at a very reasonable price - Cala Galdana is highly recommended........
Food is good but not a great deal of choice .....lots of hake and pork and chicken cooked different ways but always hot....It is very repetative..Breakfast was good and ranged from full english to continental...Snacks had to be eaten in the restaurant and also the ice-cream which my children were not happy about as they had to get dressed ...
